. . . it kind of irritates me when the topic of punk fashion comes up and it's always 90s punk. Like, I feel like most (but not all) people my age are unaware of the fashions of 70s punk, let alone 70s punk itself(aside from the Ramones), which ranged from leather and studs, to looking dapper, and even bondage. Hell, something as simple as a t-shirt and jeans was punk fashion.

I guess what I'm saying is, I don't like that when someone says how to dress punk it's always exclusively leather, studs, and dyed hair. Here are some 70s punk looks:

Also gender nonconformism was very common, not least because of the influence the New York Dolls had on the development of punk, the 90s American scene may have really kicked off widespread black eyeliner for men but in the mid-70s Pete Shelley's outfit of choice was an orange kaftan and many different shades and types of makeup (sadly I don't have pictures, I only know that from the Buzzcocks Complete History).

I had a huge paragraph typed out here that ended up wildly off course, so instead of that have some pictures of British punks not following tradition.

Poly Styrene especially loathed the idea of being subject to the press's idea of what a woman in music should look and act like, proudly bellowing angrily with huge, prominent braces on her teeth. She once said "if anyone tries to make me a sex symbol I'll shave my head" and did exactly that before coming on stage at Rock Against Racism in Victoria Park.
