You’ve already been asked hundreds of questions this week. If you were on the other side, what question would you ask Lewis Hamilton?

If I was asking myself? What am I eating this weekend? No, I don’t really know. How do I feel about the race? Or do you think you can win? I don’t know. Something boring.

So what are you eating this week?

This week, I’m pretty much on salads and probably fish. And maybe one or two steaks. You’ve got great steaks here in Austin, so I’m going to try and stay off the heavier foods and have small portions.

What would be on the menu if it wasn’t a race week?

If I can eat anything I want, I would have Aunt Jemima pancakes in the morning, stack of six, then I’d be having bacon. What else? Steaks, but I can eat steaks the majority of the time. But french fries, all the fatty stuff.

What does returning to Circuit of the Americas mean to you?

There’s a lot of races during the year, but there are places that people want to go to more than others. And this is really just a fun city every time you come. You go to Belgium, for example, and it’s in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the woods. Great track, but there is nothing to do.

So, this is a great place that a lot of people come and there’s lots of interaction. Good vibe in the city. On some weekends I just eat at the track at night. This is a place that the food is great. So I go out, get to mingle with my friends and meet new people.

How has American fandom changed since your first race at COTA?

I see Formula One growing here, but at a real slow rate. Unfortunately we only have one race here, so it’s not like people can come and get particularly attached. It’s like Halloween — it only comes once a year, which is a shame.

How do you think the Mexican Grand Prix will impact this race?

Hopefully well, because it’s not a long flight for people in here in America to go to Mexico. And it’s got a good following in Mexico with a Mexican driver. I think it’ll be neat, especially also because it’s a back to back.

Have you worn the cowboy hat you received as the U.S. Grand Prix champion?

I haven’t, and the only reason for it is that the hats they make us wear on the podium, they have the tire brand on it — or something like that. And I’m not going to walk around town with a tire brand on my head, but I do have some cool Stetson-looking kind of hats that I wear. Not full Stetsons, but fedora kind of hats. I bought some in New York.

You interacted with a group of kids today. Did you turn them into F1 fans?

Really happy that Epson brought me down to meet these kids. Because I love kids. These kids love cars. One kid in particular was just so happy to meet me, and I would have never expected that in America, but he loves cars. So it was a real pleasure working with them.
