[ katie mcgrath, genderqueer, she/they ] - was that riley ârubyâ sullivan i saw by the lighthouse today? i heard that the thirty-four year old who has been in nightrest for her whole life off and on and works as a sales associate at the weeping glass & bassist has a reputation of being logical, but also cold. they reside in fog gates & people in town usually associate them with a glass of cold whiskey with a cigarette, an air of mystery and intrigue, and broken hearts stuffed in closets full of skeletons. letâs hope the killer doesnât go after them next.

They went to college at Salem State University, getting a bachelors in music, before taking online graduate classes at a different college for music education.
She's been considering taking on a second job at Wardwell being a music teacher, but would need a push in order to actually take the leap.

nightrest:Â (tw: substance usage/abuse)
Ruby always wanted to make it big outside of Nightrest, but never seemed to be able to make it work. They've been associated with other small acts in the past, but always ended up coming back to Lu.
"Ruby" used to be just a stage name, until people started calling her that off-stage and the nickname stuck.
They havenât necessarily made the best decisions in their life, having deep ties to cigarettes and alcohol ever since they turned of age.
She has a reputation as a heartbreaker, and has left a trail of bad relationships in her wake.
She has very low self-esteem, often leading to her thinking sheâs going to end up aloneâwhich is generally when she starts avoiding her partners.
other (didn't fit anywhere else):
She has a puppy!! Harley, a golden retriever. She is Rubyâs pride and joy.

back then, i was dauntless, and dawn could never know,
and my weakness made me weep less than i would ever show you.
i burned so bright it blinded, now i know that light guided me here.
After a long day, Ruby settles in at The Daily Dose. Sheâs a frequent coffee drinker, but not someone that often hangs around the small cafeâDeadlights is more her style. But they had been so busy with meeting Yasmin and Emine at the movies and doing some last-minute shopping that the cafe was the best place to crash.
Coffee in one hand, theyâre scribbling notes with the other, lyrics scrawled under the tip of their pen. Nothing coherent, it doesnât even rhymeâitâs more like poetry at this point in timeâbut thereâs no way sheâs focused enough to edit at this point. She just needs to get it out of her head and down on paper.
Somebody, it must have been a staff member, stops near her table to tell her theyâre closing up. She blinks out of her stupor, sending them a nod before sighing. A final sip of her drink and sheâll head out. Itâs getting late, anyway, and her weekend isn't exactly shaping up to be a lazy, hang-out-in-bed kind of time.
A blurry figure in the corner of her vision catches her eye, and Ruby turns as they set down their cup, squinting through the dark toward it. Unfortunately, the lifted trunk of their car blocks her full view of the person, and she canât quite see whatever it is theyâre holding. All she can see is their grey hoodie, and the way their armload flops. Almost like a corpse.
A winding feeling works its way through her gut, fear and curiosity grasping at her heart with a cold hand. Coffee and notebook abandoned, she stands, brows furrowed as she moves towards the door. Their steps speed up the closer to out of the store they get, pushing through the glass doors that lead inside as they move away from the cafe.
She definitely shouldnât be moving closer, but if somethingâs gone wrong, she needs to knowâeither to warn others or to help. âHello?â they call out, almost against their better instincts. Their voice is firm, somewhat angry as they step closer, high heels clicking on the concrete sidewalk. What is going on over there?
They round the corner of the car, but just as theyâre about to move closer thereâs a sharp pain in between her shoulder blades. Itâs everything she can do not to scream as stumbles forward, heel catching on the sidewalk and causing her to crumble to the ground in agony. Their hair flips over their face, effectively blocking any further shot she may have had to catch the murderer in action.
Not that it matters; thereâs no way sheâs walking out of this. Another ripple of pain shoots through her as the knife is abruptly pulled out. She can feel the warm sensation of blood trickling down their back, staining their t-shirt with a deep red. They canât take a deep enough breath to counteract the aching wound, only shallow gasps coming out as they reach desperately forward. If they can crawl away from their attacker, maybe they can get free. Somehow.
The intense, sharp feeling returns as the knife bites into her back again. And again, and again, and again, pain lancing throughout their whole body in spasms as the killer relentlessly attacks. Inwardly, sheâs cursing herself for not traveling away with Lu, for not sticking up in New York with one of their many failed gigs. But Icarus flew too close to the sun. Her efforts were all for naught, and it ended tonight.Â
They blinked, memories flashing before their eyes, too fast to count.Â
Dee. Her best friend from high school, and one of the only ones that had stuck. Long nights spent talking about any subject under the sun. The other womanâs eternal optimism. Bonding over fashion.Â
Yasmin. Playdates with Emine, or girl days with her mom. Just spending time in the other's presence. Coffee, drinks, parties, you name it. Theyâd literally just seen the other two earlier that day. Thank god theyâd made it to the movies.Â
Vera. One of her closest friends. Long wine nights around the tvâhell, they'd had one just a few days ago. (Now, they would never happen again.) The only one she'd consistently trusted with her secrets, aside from Kyle.Â
Kyle. God, Kyle. Hadnât he lost enough? It felt like only a few days ago that sheâd apologized, their aggressive words at the gala still echoing within their skull. They still hadn't forgiven themselves though. Sure, they'd fought before, but never like that. And now, she'd never get a chance to fix things.
The world fades to black and Ruby can feel themselves fading with it. Itâs time.
âand most of us grew up watching it too.â she pointed out. yasmin herself had watched the movie a lot as a kid. more times than she could count too. not going to see the live action version of it would be wrong. Â âfair warning, i may end up singing along to most of the songs.â she said as a grin formed on her lips.Â
âthatâs fine with me,â ruby laughed, shaking their head. âitâs not like i would stop you. the only people youâll have to contest with will be the rest of the theater...who i have a sneaky feeling will be singing right there with you.â she chuckled, waving a hand to yasmin as she rose to her feet. âthen iâll see you this weekend, yeah?â
"They'll certainly have better use with it!" she agreed with a decisive nod. Places like Poppies obviously thrived because the right people were behind the business. She smiled lightly hearing Ruby was a local, it seemed most people she met were. "Wow has it changed much since you were younger?" The place held an old town charm that Vi suspected has lasted decades. "What efforts? Are you writing a tell all book about this place?" she asked curiously as their milkshakes were placed before them.
"Not much, not really," they grinned dryly. "Honestly, I'm pretty sure this town is fairly resistant to change. They've only added stuff, not much has actually been removed. Y'know?" At the other woman's question, she laughed, shaking her head. "At this rate, maybe I should. It would probably sell pretty well what with the last few months going how they have. But no, I'm a bassist. I hop around from band to band, for the most part." They shrugged.

They were seated on one of the tables in the corner of the dive bar with a bottle in front of them, perks of being the owner. âIâm starting to think you only pretend to be my friend to get free drinks,â Efe stated in a matter-of-fact way as he downed the rest of his drink and grabbed the bottle of whisky to pour himself another. âI might have to start charging you.â
âMaybe I do.â They grinned. âMaybe I donât. Maybe I need to try harder to hide my true intentions.â She bit back a laugh as she took a sip of her own whisky. âAw, come on, now, Efe,â she drawled slightly, rolling her eyes. âWhatâs a drink or two between friends?â Smiling, she leaned back in her chair. âSo, then, Iâd better step up my friendship game. Howâve you been?â
âan image. i get it. i wonât call you the queen of nerds though. i promise.â and she meant it too. she wouldnât do that to her friend. call her the queen of nerds in public without her permission. that wasnât her at all. âitâs the little mermaid, who wouldnât go to see it?â she pointed out. Â "i was thinking maybe friday or saturday. during the day though.â
âthank you.â she grinned. at yasminâs latter words, they laughed. âthatâs true. i mean, itâs a classic.â that theater was likely to be just as full of adults as it was children. they shrugged. âsounds good to me. just shoot me a text and iâll be over in ten.â
âWell, obviously, but knowing us, weâll make fun of whatever is on,â Vera replied, slipping onto the sofa beside Rubyâpulling her legs on top of the cushion. Things getting worse, she wished she could say something different but even she wasnât that stupid. Previous months already showing for it. âYeah, I know,â but she shrugged her shoulder. Tonight wasnât a night to worry, or discuss what was going on outside of her home. The only thing Verity wanted to do was have a night in with her friend and forget about it all. âAh.. I was thinking a movie? One of those low budget horror movies? We can laugh at all the terrible CGI.â
âWell, yeah, youâre not wrong about that,â they drawled in return, grinning. Anything to take her mind off of the ever growing and concerning threat lurking outside their doors. The Nightrest killer was very real, and Ruby was getting very sick of them. âOh, abso-fucking-lutely.â She grinned. âWhat kind of vibe are your thinking? Like...The Mummy-slash-The Ring type shit? Or something worse?â
âthings are different now. some guys actually do like it when a woman shows off their nerdy side.â she pointed out. âjust saying, you would be the hottest queen of the nerds.â and that was the truth. ruby absolutely would be. Â at the mention of if she was sure, Â yasmin nodded her head. âiâm sure. Â i need another adult there with me to talk about the movie once itâs over.â she had loved the little mermaid growing up. and now with the live action? she was more excited about it than her daughter.
âyeah, sure, but not this one.â she grinned. âyou donât understand, yasmin, i have an image to uphold, clearly.â her image was a fucking wreck, not that she gave a damnâand they both knew it. at yasminâs response, they couldnât help but laugh, shaking their head. âahh, so it was all a ploy? of course, yas, iâd love to go.â they smiled. âwhat day?â

"Oh can you?" Kyle asked sarcastically, already knowing the answer himself. He was a more than seasoned drinker, to the point where most people would find it unhealthy. "It may have been a while, but my memory is pretty decent. I don't want you throwing up in some bush on the way back either," he teased, taking a long sip of his own drink.
"Bet I could, yes." She grinned, taking a sip of her drink. At his mention of the bush, they rolled their eyes, shuddering. "I thought we agreed to never speak of that again," they warned, shooting Kyle a glare. "How dare you throw such things in my face." She sighed, glancing up at him. "You doing alright?"
âOh, Iâm so excited!â Dee jumped clapping her hands before covering her breasts before they popped out. âNow itâs your turn. We need to get you something nice and sexy as well so that we can go dancing!â She went back into the dresser to change, placing the dress on her arm while the two turned to find something else. âWhat are you thinking? Are we sticking to the dress vibes? or mini skirt? I think youâre legs definitely need to be exposed!â
They couldnât help but laugh at the other womanâs happinessâit was nice to see her so excitable. âYouâre damn right about that!â As Dee went back to change, they began to scan the racks, searching for anything that might suit them. âHard to say, really,â she mused in response, âmaybe a minidress? Itâs been a while since Iâve had one of those, I guess.â

"You're not missing out on much y'know!" Violet shook her head, waving around them. "Gives us a chance to support the ones who it comes so naturally to." She had come to the realization that she didn't need to be, and most certainly couldn't, be great at everything. Much to her mother's protests and dismay. Despite the fear that this town was reigniting Vi would rather be here than back home. "I'll compliment yours with a classic chocolate!" she ordered as they looked for a booth. "So are you a local or somehow find yourself in the weirdest town ever?"
Ruby laughed, nodding. "Very true. Give my fertilizer to the ones with the green thumbsâI've certainly got no use for it." At Violet's response, she shook her head, grinning. "Nah, I'm a local. Born and raised here, plus I've spent most of my time in the town. Despite my best efforts." If only just one of their gigs would take off, then they could get out of this godforsaken town. Alas, fate had other ideas. Like putting them through serial killers twice in a row.
"i ge that.â she replied. âi shall call you the queen of the nerds, hows that?â she asked in a teasing manner. she knew, deep down everyone had a nerd side of them. even yasmin did. and she wasnât afraid to show that either. âyou know, emine and i are going to see the little mermaid next week. youâre more than welcome to join us if you want.â
ânot in public,â she retorted, sending yasmin a look of mock horror. âi could never show my face at another bar again! all those playboys would know the truth,â they teased, chuckling. at her friendâs offer, she raised an eyebrow. âif youâre sure? i donât want to intrude on mother-daughter time. but iâd be happy to join you.â
"Take it easy on the shots, yeah?" he spoke, shooting a look in Ruby's direction before downing the glass in front of him. Somehow, he felt like he was still going slower than her, playing catch-up after showing up late. "I don't want to have to drag your ass home later."
"Please." She rolled her eyes, shooting him a dirty glance. "You know damn well I could drink you under the table." The last time they'd gotten drunk had been the March Madness game at Rhee's and, well, they'd had a reason to be. "You won't be dragging me anywhere."

âI know I said I want to watch shitty reality tv shows, but what if we make it a really bad movie?â the brunette said, a glass of recently poured wine being extended in Rubyâs direction. âI donât think I have it in me to sit on the couch and binge watch another series.â
âAs long as itâs crap that we can make fun of, I donât give a damn,â they sighed, taking the offered glass. âIâve been way too serious way too frequently these past few months, and it only looks like itâs gonna get worse.â She glanced at Vera. âWhatâd you have in mind?â
"Loverboy? Iâ" Rami was about to retort but the sight of paper with numbers scrawled on got him to shut up. "Okay well I stand corrected!" he chuckles with a shake to his head unsure of how that worked for Ruby, maybe it was more delivery than content. "Noted, next round on me if you divulge more tips!"
Ruby grins at his surprise, waving the paper lightly between her fingers before plopping it back on the bar. "Women will often take pity on a woman that doesn't know what she's doing. Doesn't always work the same on men, I've noticed," she replies dryly, half-poking fun at him. Raising an eyebrow at his latter words, they smile. "Well, if that's what's in it for me. What do you want to know?"
