shikamaru still feels his pulse race when he sees her walking down the stairs. it feels like the first time, where he's speechless and praying this goes somewhat according to plan (it didn't).

it’s not even that obvious. memorizing her schedule. her routes. her routines. her missions. weighing her loyalty to her village and to konoha. simple.

then it moves to coincidences. mission overlaps. overstaying in konoha for meetings. delayed messages from suna. nothing grand to trace, but something.

no he won’t cage her. that’s not him. she’s not one to be caged. he’s just narrowing her paths so it eventually leads to him. that choosing him feels like her own decision.

she notices, he adjusts. her missions suddenly gets a little difficult. suna needing konoha’s assistance more than before. her needing an ally which happens to be him.
