Wild Rose Press (Self-Published) Edition of 250 Publication: Spring 2018 Letter Press cover Hand bound with wax thread at Salt Grass Printmakers in Salt Lake City, Utah Photocopy printed 56-pages
Bears Ears zine includes 30 photographs and an essay by Russel Albert Daniels, a poem by Denae Shanidiin, and an essay by Terry Tempest Williams.
Bears Ears zine reveals the sacredness, beauty, and mystery of this significant cultural landscape. For 13,000 years Native Americans have continuously inhabited the mesa tops, evergreen forests, and redrock canyons of the Greater Bears Ears area. This high desert landscape includes over 100,000 vulnerable archaeological sites from various populations; cliff dwellings, kivas, rock art images, and burial grounds.
Bears Ears photozine emphasizes the Antiquities Act proposal created by a five tribe coalition - Navajo, Uintah & Ouray Ute, Hopi, Zuni, and Ute Mountain Ute Nations - in 2015, the coalition released the proposal that protects and preserves the cultural and natural resources inside Bears Ears. The core of the proposal is focused on spiritual and land stewardship.
This proposal protects the Bears Ears National Monument landscape from fossil fuel and uranium development.

Boulder, Utah.
Photos made by Niki Chan.
Before Mormon settlers and John C. Fremont “discovered” Antelope Island archeological evidence show that Native people have been living on the island for at least 2000 years and I doubt they called it “Antelope.” Caves nearby, along the extinct Ice Age Lake Bonneville shoreline, have proven that humans have been living in these areas for at least 14,000 years. Mammoth blood has been found on large spear points. Antelope Island is seen here from Grandeur Peak in the Wasatch Mountains.

Rainbow Squares square dancing club. Salt Lake City, Utah
My most favorite story I photographed for Salt Lake Magazine in 2005. The magazine ran my color photos, which as you can imagine are colorful, rainbow fun, but I’ve always favored these straightforward black and white flash portraits. Rolleiflex 2.8.

My great, great grandma Rose on the left. She was Diné captured/trafficked by White River Utes in 1845 at the age of 5. I’m assuming this photo is probably circa 1910-20’s.

In Indian country, to be healthy means to be in balance. Balance occurs when what you know is the same as what you say, and when what you say is how you really feel. Balance happens when knowledge, feeling, and action are in harmony. That is the essence of your being, your truth. The Navajo’s call this path “Hozho” - the way of beauty. To be healthy is to walk in beauty.
