There was a new bruise rising on his left cheek, but it was nothing a bit of foundation couldnāt hideāheād been getting good at that latelyāand though it did hurt a little to smile, he couldnāt help it when he got Rumikoās review.Ā āI can take that.ā He had been expecting at least a seven, and that was being generous.Ā
A quick glance at the bed and the half packed bag gave him another surge of hope. If she really didnāt believe in him, didnāt believe this could happen, that he could really follow through, she wouldnāt have bothered packing, right?Ā He knew things werenāt great between them, but the relief of not having to lie to her anymore made everything feel more possible. Time might not be on their side, but at least there was nothing left between them, that biggest wall torn down.Ā Of course, Tony had other wallsāwith commitment, with trustābut they were walls he was less aware of. As far as he knew, there was nothing he was hiding from her, no more lies he was actively keeping.Ā
āI cleared my schedule, and the plane is ready and waiting as soon as you are. Itās a long flight. Youāll have plenty of time to yell at me at 30,000 feet.āĀ
Rumiko was really on the fence about the whole Iron Man thing, even now that it had had time to settle in her head. It meant that he was putting its life on the line almost any time he stepped out of the house. Part of her was proud, because it was so on point for him. Taking care of people was almost ingrained in him as deeply as her defiance to the old Japanese traditions her dad tried to stick to.
Another small part of her was jealous, because he'd kept it from her for so long, but how many other people knew that he was Iron Man before she knew?Ā
The last part of her was scared. What would happen if she lost him? Would she be able to handle the grief? Who would take over for him?Ā
There were too many questions and she didn't have answers for any of them.Ā
She set the flowers aside, knowing she would have to get them into a vase after she was done packing for them. She set the flowers on the bed beside the bag while she rummaged around for clothes to take. "I'd be more mad, but you literally saved lives, how could I be mad about that?Ā
Finding out that he's somehow cleared his schedule, she was impressed. She knew Tony was good, but how he'd pulled that off in the time that he was gone, was slightly awe-inspiring. "Oh, okay! I'll pack faster then." She kissed his cheek as she flitted by, dropping a few more items in the bag.
