Head canon Prompt: Rupert is prone to anxiety and Amir is prone to depression and how they learn this about one another and grow to help each other cope the best they can
Oh wow it's been a while since I answered one of these!
Just a quick disclaimer before I get into it (and I'll put the headcanon under the cut): I am not an expert on anxiety or depression so this likely won't be an accurate representation of either condition and will mostly be my thoughts on how the boys might struggle mentally, whether that's because of anxiety and depression or not.
(also, I know things don't necessarily cause anxiety or depression but I think some events in the podcast definitely contribute to possible bad mental health)
Now with that out of the way, the headcanon will begin under the cut
Ok so Rupertβs anxiety probably partially stems from having to attend all his motherβs parties as a child
He always had to look and act his best and even though this was the only time heβd perhaps meet people his age, he wasnβt allowed to be himself around them
This leads to him struggling to open up to new people (hence why he pretends to be someone else when he meets Amir, because it was easier than being himself)
Heβs always worrying that heβs doing something wrong, even when he and Amir start ruling and changing some of the traditional waysΒ
His anxiety also gets worse after the events of the podcast, since so many things went wrong and now he sees potential disaster around every corner
He worries if he says or does something wrong, or if he angers the wrong person, the kingdom will be in danger once again
For Amir, his motherβs rigorous training and lack of interaction with other kids his age might have played a part in his depression
His days were often full of routine, up to the point that he could be feeling numb all day and still be able to perform perfectly
As he gets older, heβs allowed more free time, but spends most of it training by himself, using it as a distraction from his thoughts
Heβd work or train until he was tired enough to fall asleep quickly and then throw himself back into it as soon as he woke up
When the boys meet and get together, they donβt tell each other their mental struggles at first, not wanting the other to worry
But they canβt hide it forever, and after Rupert has a panic attack and Amir feels helpless, they finally decide to talk
They come up with a system for helping each other
When theyβre doing their duties together and Rupert seems overwhelmed, Amir will squeeze his hand as if to ask βare you ok?β and Rupert will squeeze back once for yes and twice for no, allowing Amir to make excuses for them to leave if necessary
If theyβre doing their duties separately, Rupert will send Fitzroy to find Amir so he can come and help
When Amirβs having a bad day and actually decides to stay in bed, Rupert will stay and cuddle with him if he can, or will cover for Amir if he has duties to attend to
Sometimes when Amir wants to throw himself into his work, Rupert will make sure to give him something without human contact, and will check on Amir throughout the day to make sure heβs eaten
Itβs through these small gestures that their relationship grows stronger, and while their mental health will never be perfect, itβs improved by there love and care towards one another
Theyβre still brought up the same but Amir thinks heβs training to become a good king
Their kingdoms are relatively close together but the forest obscures them from the otherβs gaze
They both go for a walk/ride alone one day and the two meet and start talking
They try to meet as regularly as they can, bringing food and books to swap/talk about
Eventually, feelings start to develop and thereβs flirting here and there
One day Rupert decides heβs gonna confess his feelings so takes some flowers from the garden
When he gets to their meeting spot, Amirβs set up a cute little picnic and he confesses his feelings
Rupert starts laughing and Amirβs confused until Rupert gives him the flowers and explains how he was gonna do the same
So they have their little picnic and they talk about the things they like about each other and they kiss tentatively
Now whenever they meet up, they kiss in greeting and hold hands and cuddle
Both had been telling their mothers that they were simply going for walks
But then the queens notice the boys are staying out longer, or that food and other things are going missing
So one day, Lavinia sends someone to follow Rupert and Atossa sends someone to follow Amir
And the messengers see the boys kiss and report back to their queens
The boys come home and are told about the prophecy, told they canβt see the other prince until the fight, told they have to focus on training
In the last few weeks until their 18th, Amir trains hard as always, while Rupert learns how to hold a sword and constantly loses his practice fights, much to the dismay of his mother
On the day of the fight, they meet in the hollow
They hug tightly but are broken apart by the booming sound of their fatherβs voices
They are forced to fight
Amir goes as easy as he can, knowing this is not Rupertβs strong point
He has Rupert backed against a tree, sword against his neck
βIβm sorry my love, I wish it didnβt have to be this wayβ
βItβs ok Amir. I know itβs not your choice. Youβll make a great king. I love you.β
They kiss one last time, desperate and loving, knowing this will be their last
But then they hear their fathers screaming in anguish before disappearing back into the tree
The curse is broken and love has won
Their mothers find them embracing, having not let go since the fight ended
