honestly fandom has ruined me because now any time i'm in the desert and i see two vast and trunkless legs of stone or a half-sunk shattered visage i'm like "omg just like in Ozymandias" and its like come on girl not every half-sunk shattered visage is Ozymandias
Something odd is happening in the tech world right now: the technology that was supposed to make human labour obsolete is, at this moment, more expensive than the humans it was meant to replace. Companies are laying off workers to fund the very AI tools that cost more than the workers they just let go. The circular logic of it would be darkly comic if tens of thousands of livelihoods weren't caught in the middle.
[...]
The stated rationale is consistent: operational efficiency, reallocation toward AI. But the MIT study found that AI automation is economically viable in only about 23 percent of roles. For the remaining 77 percent, humans remain cheaper. Goldman Sachs' chief economist has stated plainly that he does not view AI investment as strongly growth-positive. Sequoia Capital partner David Cahn has put a number on the resulting gap: AI companies need roughly $600 billion in annual revenue to justify current infrastructure spending. The gap, as of mid-2026, is widening, not closing. So the present moment looks like this: companies cutting human labour to fund artificial intelligence that currently costs more than the labour it replaces, in pursuit of productivity gains that most studies cannot yet verify, at a pace that is exhausting annual budgets in weeks.

the only way to stop all the rich people going mad from being surrounded by yes-men is to assign each one a court jester who can mock them without repercussion. everyone with a net worth of more than like 10 mil is forced to hire a Fool. the Fool must be paid as much as their highest-paid employee. they can attend every meeting you have and must relentlessly rip the absolute shit out of you. heckle and hassle you in front of everyone else. tell you all your ideas are garbage and exactly why. you will know no peace and you’re not allowed to fire them. obviously the state runs the Fools’ Inspectorate to ensure the diligence of the Fools. this plan is flawless. the avoidance of future mad-king jeffs bezos. gainful employment for people who would otherwise become podcasters
if they don’t like this one, my other plan can be assembled in an afternoon with some 2x4s, a few feet of rope and a very, very big knife
watching my promised afternoon thunderstorm slip from a 90% chance to a 20% chance.... baby come back i can change

Oh goodness! I wonder if Mr. Thiel has his fingers in a few pies that would get spoiled if enough people, including the leader of the largest church in the world, advocated for AI regulations?
