Costco’s average pay, for example, is $17 an hour, 42 percent higher than its fiercest rival, Sam’s Club. And Costco’s health plan makes those at many other retailers look Scroogish. One analyst, Bill Dreher of Deutsche Bank, complained last year that at Costco “it’s better to be an employee or a customer than a shareholder.” Mr. Sinegal begs to differ. He rejects Wall Street’s assumption that to succeed in discount retailing, companies must pay poorly and skimp on benefits, or must ratchet up prices to meet Wall Street’s profit demands. Good wages and benefits are why Costco has extremely low rates of turnover and theft by employees, he said. And Costco’s customers, who are more affluent than other warehouse store shoppers, stay loyal because they like that low prices do not come at the workers’ expense. “This is not altruistic,” he said. “This is good business.”

This is part of what’s wonderful about living here, the mountains that surround our valley, the openness of the agricultural land, the fact that it’s such a short drive to the ocean. Instead of dwelling on the crime and rampant gang activity for which our city is known, I need to be more appreciative of this. It’s stunning when seen through the lens of Mr. Wriston.

My dad worked at the shooting range through the seventies. These are unique because they're practically on the ocean.

I lived on Fort Ord for about 7 years in the '60s (my dad was in the Army), and seeing it like this breaks. my. heart. My daughters & I visited my house on Walker St., with a permit & a guide from the City of Marina. I was taken aback and brought to tears at the destruction that had gone on since the last time my brother & I had driven to it back when a permit wasn't needed. I have mixed feelings about your guide.

I can understand. I've lived here my entire life. My dad retired in 1980 from Fort Ord. We were still on base regularly. My mom had horses at the stables, and we used to ride the trails all the time. So the place has been a huge part of my life and seeing the destruction made me so angry. Especially any destruction to the old barracks. I'm just less angry now that I realize I know one of the kids.

The guy who showed me around. I just told him to show me whatever he wanted to, and he was happy to oblige. It wasn't long after we were in the area that he let loose, knocking down a small shed with glee. This destructive streak is not apparent when you first meet him. He's actually a very shy and overly-polite guy. But here, he can let loose. He and his friends have claimed this area that no one else really cares about. He's a legendary whirlwind of destruction and even an object of speculation and myth. As I said in the beginning, he's the person I would have wondered about had I wandered in here alone. In fact, he's actually part of the reason I didn't head in there alone. I've heard about the gangs of teens who go there to destroy. Doesn't sound like people you'd want to run across. Turns out I knew one of them already.

In this shot, he'd stopped as we walked through the house to listen for sounds. He was constantly on the alert for any dangers-- either authorities or strangers.
