I’ve been thinking a lot about him lately. I have some feelings.

He grew up in a cave eating fungus with no adults. He’s not going to be the most nourished, healthy person.

His understanding of parental responsibilities is going to be skewed.

Dental work is expensive and if he’s trying to make enough caps to support his son, he’s not going to do anything about his cave fungus teeth.

He was married and had a wife who was attracted enough to him for them to have a child. Maybe he’s not as clueless about hygiene as everyone thinks.

By the time the Sole Survivor meets Mac, he’s struggling with incredibly deep depression. See his dialogue for examples.

Idk about yall, but as someone who has been depressed to the point of being unable to function in society for awhile, hygiene is easy to forget. It doesn’t mean you don’t care about it or that you’re a gross person. Taking care of yourself just doesn’t occur to you and when it does, a lot of the time you don’t see the point.

He’s trying to survive and cure his sick child…couple that with his depression and no wonder he’s covered in dirt. He’s not prioritizing himself at all.

Just because Bethesda didn’t give his story closure doesn’t mean he’s a bad dad who abandoned his son.

Plenty of parents in this world don’t live with their children because they have to go to extreme measures to earn money. They send the money home to take care of their family. It doesn’t mean they love their family any less or that they’re bad parents. They are making a huge sacrifice and doing the best they can. I had a live-in nanny growing up who was doing this exact thing…living with us, going home (to another country) MAYBE once a month to see her family (not because we didn’t pay her well but bc she was sending home as much money as possible) but doing her absolute best. She was a wonderful mother who loved her kids more than life, and missed them fiercely.
