Something about Richard Gadd's writing that I think deserves a lot of credit is that it allows viewers to explore really dark and taboo subjects without being made to feel like they are wrong. Because a big part of pushing boundaries means recognizing that there aren't always easy answers and for a lot of people (like RGadd himself clearly) engaging in these types of stories in a fictional setting can be cathartic and validating even when it's dark and there is no happy ending. There is nothing necessarily wrong with media that is more clear cut and gives you a happy ending but I would argue that we need shows like Half Man where the lines between sex, violence and abuse are a lot more blurred than most of us are comfortable with.
It's also an opportunity for us as viewers to self-reflect and analyze how we feel about what we see onscreen and where our feelings are coming from. A lot of the time, more often than people realize or want to acknowledge, our feelings about art and media are less rooted in something the art or media is depicting and more rooted in our own mentality, biases, traumas etc. And that doesn't mean those feelings are invalid but it is always worth examining why we are having those feelings. I am so grateful to Richard Gadd for giving me the opportunity to do so.
And the fact that neither of the shows that we've gotten from him give us easy characters or a solid message and instead we are left to decide for ourselves what we take away from it is also very important to me. Because most of the time these days, if a show or movie depicts a difficult topic, it's done in a way that makes it clear what the viewers are supposed to be taking away from it. And I don't necessarily mind that. Adolescence, for example, is a show that was uncomfortable and I really appreciated it but was very obvious in what the message was. However, I think it is equally important to have shows that make us question what we feel about what we've seen and why we feel that way.

Summertime
how it feels when the fictional character is a wretched pathetic coward in the same way you are
delhi police have set up checkpoints 5km from jantar mantar to stop people from reaching the protest. they are blocking food from getting through. people across india had been sending food to the protestors through online portals or in person and that has been shut down too now.
this is happening while protests are simultaneously erupting in pune, lucknow, amritsar, hyderabad, bangalore, jaipur, mumbai and dozens of districts across india. tens of thousands of people on the streets. france 24 and cnn have called this the biggest protest movement against this government in years.
the government itself has clarified that these protests have no outside forces or foreign interference involved, this is entirely student-led, entirely about exam paper leaks and a minister who refuses to resign. so if there are no outside forces, no foreign hand, no terrorist links, then why are students being treated like this? why is a sit-in being met with baton charges, tear gas, a 21 year old in the icu, internet shutdowns in a 1.5km radius, 17 metro stations closed, facial recognition running on crowds, food being blocked, and nsa powers, laws designed for national security threats, being activated against people, against students?
article 19 of the indian constitution guarantees every citizen the right to peaceful assembly. a government that starves protesters out, shuts their internet, tracks their faces, and threatens them is not protecting order. it is protecting itself.
she's shouting "he's just sitting there peacefully, please leave him" and look at the police.
