2000 years ago in china i knew someone one who had their nose cut off as one of the five punishments and the next time i had went to go see him his tongue had been ripped out and when i thought he had offended again a neighboring serf told me that he had done it himself all while he grinned at me with his bloody teeth so i went back the next day and he had bandages wrapped around his his head with large stains where his ears should have been and he still only grinned at me like i was supposed to laugh so i went back the next day and his grin was the only area of his head that wasnt covered by bandages and i asked the neighboring serf and was told that he had kept his eyes ears and tongue in a box where no one but him could stand up tall enough to reach so i went back the next day and his legs laid on the floorboards in front of him on his chair along with his left arm as he sat there grinning despite the nasty gash where his right arm met his shoulder then i realized he could no longer reach the box he had put his eyes ears and tongue in so i asked the neighboring serf where he had put it and when i found it i used his legs to reach up as high as i could and when i finally opened the box there were no eyes ears or tongues but a letter to a name i could not recognize stuffed with heartfelt condolences and assurances that there was one thing that could never be severed from him. i found him dead the next morning
