starting off pride month with one of the best coming out scenes in television history 💕
James never smoked.
Unless he wanted to be reminded of Sirius’ lips again.
I could never wear any of those dumb “I hope both teams have fun” shirts because no I hope my team wins by 30 and the other team explodes on the field

i almost let comparison be the thief of my joy again

TOOO WHAT END
I should be stuDYING right now, but here's some Jily~
Maybe
She's seen James Potter perform kindness before. This is the first time she sees him mean it.
Lily found the corridor by accident.
She'd taken the long way back from the library — the east staircase was faster, but it smelled like damp stone and something that might have been a Flobberworm colony, and she wasn't in the mood. The west passage ran behind the Charms classrooms and came out near the Fat Lady's portrait if you took the second left, but Lily had been thinking about the transfiguration essay due Friday and miscounted her turns, and now she was standing at the mouth of a narrow, dim corridor that dead-ended at a supply cupboard.
She was about to turn around when she heard it.
"—don't belong in this section of the castle, Mudblood—"
The word hit her like cold water. She'd heard it enough times to know she should keep walking. She didn't.
There were three of them: sixth-year Slytherins she recognized by face and house colours, not by name. She'd spent two years making a point of not learning the names of boys who said things like that. The one in front — tall, with the kind of blond hair that looked like it had been taught to be superior — had his wand out, though lazily, like he wasn't sure he'd need it. The other two flanked him in that specific Slytherin formation that was less about tactics and more about theatre.
The target of this particular theatre was a small girl with ink-stained fingers and the red-and-yellow tie of a Gryffindor first-year. She couldn't have been older than eleven. She was backed against the supply cupboard door, and her chin was lifted in that way Lily recognized immediately — the way you hold yourself when you refuse to cry in front of someone who wants you to.
She'd stood like that, once. In second year. She'd stopped, eventually, and started crying anyway, because she'd been twelve and alone. That was before she'd learned that her voice was the loudest thing she had.
She was gathering that voice now, already stepping forward, when the sound stopped her.
"Mulciber."
Just the name. Flat and carrying. Not loud.
She looked left.
James Potter was leaning against the corridor wall with his arms folded, a few feet from the Slytherins, as if he'd been there for a while and was simply choosing now to be noticed. His school bag was slung over one shoulder. He looked, Lily thought, almost bored.
remember when you were 10 and you would hang out with your friends in order to Look At The Computer together like you went to their house and experienced the information superhighway together. and then leave
How fucking old are you people?
normal amount
You see, there used to be a time (not all that long ago) when being offline was the default. And going online was the rare and wonderful thing that we (briefly) enjoyed.
It even came with happy modem noises.
They weren't happy noises.
They were polite and reasonable noises! The sound of protocol being followed! Negotiation and compromise!
The box would scream
It sounds like screaming, but actually it's a mating call.
wait a minute

happy dusteve day to all who celebrate
JANCY + yelling in unison at steve
THE Steve Harrington face™
My boy is confused, but he's game.
Idk if this is a hot take or whatever but I think part of the reason Robin's coming out scene is so effective is actually because we as the viewer are put in the same position as steve of misreading their interactions and subsequently being totally fucking blindsided by the reveal.
If you're going into the season completely blind with no prior knowledge that Robin is a lesbian, like most of us did when it came out in 2019, the you're already sort of primed by narrative conventions to root for Robin and Steve to end up together, or at least expect them to. By s3 we know that steve is a Good Guy, and therefore he deserves a girlfriend. But we're not supposed to root for steve and nancy anymore, because nancy is with Jonathan now and Jonathan is also a Good Guy. So enter Robin, who is paired exclusively with steve for the entire season, and the solution becomes obvious.
And the thing is, they do seem to hit all the standard tropes for a romance arc. They have chemistry! They act like they don't like each other but they have funny banter. They hold hands during a tense moment. Dustin repeatedly encourages steve to go after her. Robin admits that she was obsessed with him in high school.
And then the reveal comes and it turns out there actually is a platonic explanation for everything, at least on robin's side. And even as a queer woman myself, when I watched it for the first time I was almost disappointed for a second, because I love steve and want good things for him.
And that's part of why it works so well for me, because it did piss people off (not everyone - iirc it was actually pretty well received at the time, but there were definitely factions of both shippers and reddit bros who hated it, some of which still remain in denial to this day) and because it works as a sort of meta commentary on what it's like to be a gay woman in real life even forty years later. Because unless you're openly and visibly queer, people will assume that you're available to any guy that's interested and jump to conclusions about your relationships with close male friends. Straight is automatically assumed as the default, and by keeping the audience in the dark about Robin's sexuality until the crucial moment, our own subconscious biases are exposed. There's nothing to suggest that she's gay before she says it, but equally there's nothing to suggest that she's straight, it's just the conclusion we jump to because that's what we've been trained to expect.
And with her coming out it's like she's telling us that actually she is her own character and she's not just here to be a love interest, and imo both Robin as a character and her relationship with steve are made all the stronger for it.

DUDE! STEVE WAS FURIOUS WITH DUSTIN. NOT ONLY BECAUSE HE WAS LYING TO HIM STRAIGHT IN THE FACE BUT ALSO BECAUSE IT HURT HIM TO SEE HIM IN THAT STATE OF PAIN AND AT THE SAME TIME HE BLAMED HIMSELF FOR EVERYTHING THAT WAS HAPPENING.
THE ANGUISH AND TENSION BETWEEN THEM WAS THE BEST PART OF SEASON 5.
