honestly, in that regard, he's even more protective than sebastian.

the question is: who is he trying to protect him from?

i doubt he's expecting sebastian to suddenly attack the manor, so is there someone else he believes could be coming after them?

It's not because it's perfect.

It's because this story is one of the very few that makes me think about masks, identity, power, grief, and the roles people choose to survive.

Almost every character is playing a version of themselves: Sebastian, who plays “the perfect butler” to hide his monstrosity, Ciel, the child who claims he's “an adult”, Undertaker, a grim reaper who chose to hide behind the identity of a “A cheerful undertaker” to escape his grief; Elizabeth, who decides to take the role of a "perfect wife" to adhere to her society's expectations, Agni, who in order to atone for the sins he committed, took the role of a “devoted worshiper”. Lau, who literally takes the role of the “fool” to diffuse attention away from himself.

Some characters wear these masks to fool others. Others wear them because they have forgotten who they are without them. For some, the mask is not just a disguise, but a survival mechanism.

Perhaps this is why this story sticks with me.

Beneath the demons and murder mysteries and Victorian aesthetics, Black Butler is a story about identity made through trauma, about what grief can turn people into, and if the mask you wear to survive becomes your real face over time.

The fact that Christianity was specifically referenced in the latest chapter (Roman Curia Exorcists) feels like confirmation that Yana's mythology is pulling from Christian beliefs and symbolism. To be fair, this isn't entirely new. Yana has used Christian iconography before (saints in murals, crosses, and so on), but the Roman Curia is explicitly Catholic.

The repeated 8 got my brain jumping straight to Jesus' resurrection on the eighth day.

Then I found this:

Imagine living through all of this:

Commits suicide. Doesn't get peace. Gets recruited as a Grim Reaper. Falls in love. Has a family. Loses the love of his life. His son is murdered. One grandson is murdered. His daughter wants nothing to do with him. He claws one grandson back from death, while the other looks at him like he's the villain.

It's so well done. Holy shit, Yana left it just ambiguous enough to trick the reader.

then one returned, and she took him under her wing, in her own way stepping into the role of the parents he no longer had. then the other came back too, claiming he had been wounded all that time. if ciel dies, he will surely take his brother with him.

I'm supposed to believe this is unintentional? That's adorable.

It's hilarious how these match her and UT's relationship almost exactly, from start to finish.

6. Desire: The spark; the initial, undeniable fixation Undertaker developed for a mortal Phantomhive woman.

​7. Sin: The taboo crossed; their relationship defying the laws of life, death, and the Grim Reaper dispatch, marking a definitive rebellion against the natural order. The physical act of an immortal being rewriting a human family tree.

​8. Passion: The emotional driving force; the raw, overwhelming intensity of their bond that proved too powerful for either a human or an immortal to resist.

​9. Kiss: The point of no return; the physical sealing of their private, intimate devotion, cementing a secret bond that existed entirely in the shadows.

​10. Beauty: The tragic aftermath; Claudia's death freezing her in time as Undertaker's ultimate, immortalized ideal, leaving him to carry her locket as a monument to what he lost.

Moreover, numbers 8 (Passion) and 9 (Kiss) rest squarely over the center of her torso and womb area in the panel.

​Yana literally draped the numbers for Passion and Kiss directly over the physical space of Claudia's body where her children would have been carried, right before the tape measure drops down to 10 (Beauty/Death) at the very bottom.

Although, everything escalates when you realize Vincent (the offspring of a love kept secret and forbidden) is concealing the number 11.

A truth hiding in plain sight: Undertaker is Cedric K. Ross, and the Ciels are still oblivious to the fact that their grandfather has been there all along.
