“This was the wrong way.”

Riddle repeated the words for the umpteenth time, as though it weren’t already clear. They’d been lost for quite awhile at this point, separated from the group during a wilderness survival expedition with Vargas. Kanato had decided to rush off into the woods, and of course Riddle had followed…he couldn’t simply allow one of his underclassman to disappear on his own unsupervised.

And, of course, they had gotten lost. It was a perfectly predictable scenario: neither of them had any sort of proper wilderness training or specialization, and though Riddle did his best to memorize maps and routes, even he couldn’t possibly take into consideration each inch of the tense forest surrounding their campus. So they were in a bit of a conundrum. With no brooms, they’d need to rely on what they knew about navigation to get back to school that way.

Not Riddle’s strongest area, to be sure, but he was the Housewarden here…so it was only right that he take charge. Now if only Kanato would stop being so difficult about everything. 

Now, Riddle was used to difficult people; he had plenty in his life. Half of the time, he was a difficult person, himself. But Kanato had taken things to an entirely different level, ever since the moment he first set foot in their school. And he had such issues with taking direction…he wouldn’t listen well no matter how much Riddle attempted to guide him, and the redhead was nothing if not relentless. 

In any case. They’d need to work harmoniously as a pair for once if they wanted any hope of returning safely.

“Kanato, that’s enough. Follow me; you’ve gotten us into this situation and you’ve been leading us aimlessly for ages. Will you please just allow me to decide our next route??”

Riddle looked rather unhappy, though for good reason. His appearance was not unlike that of a halfway drowned dog, nor was his behavior. trembling like a leaf, he seemed able to feel the cold all the way down to his bones, and he couldn’t shake it off for the life of him - not even when Jamil was right there, sitting by his side and far more composed than he could have ever hoped to be given the situation. 

They’d run into each other awhile before, despite the later hour, and Riddle couldn’t stop inwardly scolding himself, for what had he been doing running the track in the coliseum at this hour anyway? Just because he wasn’t as strong in gym, just because his scores during their last fitness tests weren’t perfect, and just because his daily responsibilities allowed no time to practice while it was light out…it didn’t mean he should. The storm had come on quickly, as harsh as it was sudden, and it hardly took any time at all for him to be drenched…and then consequently slip and fall on his face. 

The pain in his twisted ankle had registered quickly enough…he was lucky to catch the doors to the gym opening a ways away, the Scarabia vice seemingly attempting to assess whether it would be worth it to run across campus through the rain, or wait it out. His razor-sharp vision had caught onto the redhead on the ground; incredibly lucky for Riddle considering his voice couldn’t possibly have been heard over the roar of wind and thunder even if he’d tried to call out for help.

He could have pretended he didn’t see. Seven knew Riddle would’ve deserved it. But he came over in his flimsy basketball uniform instead, and hoisted him up without protest. Which led them back to the gym, a clean neck towel in Riddle’s trembling hands from Jamil’s bag which he did his best to dry himself with, or at the very least get some of the water out of his hair.

“…T-Thank you…”

When he finally spoke up, it was through chattering teeth. If he wasn’t so colorless from the cold, he knew he’d be flushed a bright red in embarrassment over all of this. But he swallowed his pride nonetheless, doing the best he could to express his attitude.

“For e-everything. Including the t-towel. Are you certain you wouldn’t rather u-use it yourself…?”

Not that he could, at this point. It was sopping wet, just like the rest of Riddle.

This was most certainly not the same as getting caught in the rain on campus; or anywhere near Octavinelle, and Riddle was not treating it with the same level of acceptance and calm that he had the last time this had happened. Rule 134 existed for a reason ( even if that reason was beyond most ), and when it was necessary to put it into practice, yet not possible ( such as right now ), of course that was bound to leave him irritated. Soaking wet and with a sour expression…not unlike an angry cat. 

“…What I fail to understand,”

The grumbling finally came, a deep furrow displaying his discontent between his brows as he settled a glare upon the eel across from him, who, of course, looked completely unphased by all of this despite the fact that he was equally as drenched with water

“Is why you thought that involving this mushroom - which is nigh impossible to find unless under specific conditions - in our potions project was a good idea. Why trekking off into the forests of the island was a good idea, most of all under threat of rainfall. Look at us now. We’re coated in water and we look like utter fools.”

A rattling, angry sigh. He should like to see Jade’s plan to get them out of this one. Already, the biting, bone-deep chill of the water was prompting him to react, shivering as his skin took on a pallor. Stick thin as he was, he didn’t do well in lower temperatures. And he wasn’t doing well now, either. 

“Jade, do you even have any idea where we are?”

“I’ve not had much experience with music; only what’s been written out in books.”

The confession came as his enthusiasm died down slightly. He pressed his lips together as he reluctantly recalled all he’d been kept from. He still struggled, even now after he’d Overblotted, to think of mother as being ‘ wrong ‘ about anything. And she’d never approved of the arts. But now, Riddle was being offered a chance to hear anything he should like, and wasn’t that quite the offering; quite the gift. He wasn’t so sure he knew well what to do with it, for his expertise in the area was limited at best…and yet he wanted to learn so much. He’d already spoken of books, however, and there was something he’d always wanted to hear with his own ears, something he’d spent much time analyzing…

“Beethoven. The Kreutzer Sonata, do you know any of it? ‘ Music makes me forget myself, my true condition, it carries me off into another state of being, one that isn't my own ’. It’s from the novel of the same name, one of Tolstoy’s greatest.”

He breathed the words out quickly, lacing his fingers together as a nervous excitement grew within him once more. 

“Oh, mother never truly liked the book; it is quite morbid. Though, Tolstoy was always approved reading material. I must’ve gone through the entire thing at least a dozen times; I’ve always wondered what the real thing sounds like. I’m aware a violinist is usually required, though part of it can still be played on the piano…”

He trailed off, thinking for a moment.

“Anything of Shakespeare’s would be pleasing as well, scores from Romeo and Juliet, or a Midsummer Night’s Dream…they’re all things I would find deeply worthwhile to listen to.” 

His lips morphed into a smile then, wide and bright, exhilaration prompting a delighted laugh, which he attempted to stifle with one hand.

“Really, I never thought this sort of thing would happen today! To hear music, and to have it come from you! You’ve caught me off guard, Azul.”
