personality: a soft soul, with undertones of wit and humor. rory is rarely seen with anything less than a smile on his face, whether thatโs a facade is anyoneโs guess. many could consider him a living, breathing stereotype of a happy-go-lucky, optimistic irish lad with a heart of gold, and many would probably be right. despite his golden retriever tendencies, thereโs reservations in his mannerisms. if he makes his presence known, itโs fleeting, as he much prefers to watch from the wings than be center stage, and with every positive interaction, thereโs a negative reaction within his internal monologue that holds him back. โyouโre so awkward.โ โsay something interesting for once.โ and โnobody cares whether youโre here or not.โ are just a handful of insecure thoughts that plague most of roryโs interactions.
likes: coffee, cocktails, swimming, night-time, spring, creating (writing, sketching, or painting), photography/retro polaroid cameras, macaroni & cheese, classic literature, poetry.
dislikes: rain, being the center of attention, watching sports (heโd much rather do them), spiders, romcoms, superhero movies, shallowness.ย
fears: fading into obscurity, having no friends, homelessness/poverty, illness, rodents.
trivia: went to the royal college of art in london.
Bio.
rory was an only child, to a doting mother and father (though his father from the onset was plagued with maladies and sickness).
rory struggled with the more cerebral subjects at school, but that never stopped him from trying. he enjoyed school from a very early age, though focused on it at the expense of making any real, tangible friendships from the very beginning of education all the way up to college.ย
roryโs father passed away a week before his tenth birthday of natural, health-related causes. it was abrupt, and rory had to be acquainted to death rather early on in his life. though the death was quick, rory and his mother were under no pretence that the clock had been ticking long before,
with his concentrated efforts at school, he was then noticed for his creative accolades and talent - being a phenomenal artist for someone so young in not only ability but in the way his mind sourced inspiration. mature works of art many practised artists couldnโt dream of. his school invested in his talent as soon as it was noticed.
the situation got tricky, however, as his art teacher during high school had a rather intimate relationship with the flanagans due to the nurturing of roryโs talent. this resulted in a rather slippery slope, though, as before long roryโs mother and his art teacher were courting, then engaged, then wed, all before rory graduated.ย
this strained his relationship with his family, and it was then that rory became acutely aware of the academic exploitation of his talents. an irrelevant school in galway having discovered โthe next best thingโ in the world of arts was more money to be made, more than anything else, and when his two strongest cheerleaders, his mother and his teacher (now step-father), chose to invest more time in one another, it dawned on rory that he was nothing but a means to an end.
so from then, he carved his own path. he studied the arts (literature, theatre, art) in dublin, where he was then scouted for a postgraduate scholarship in london, at the royal college of art.
again rory sacrificed everything in the name of development, and though he fell in love with the united states, he had very little time to make nice or plant his roots before he was whisked off to london - but his heart yearned to go back. therefore, it was a no-brainer for him to move straight back โhomeโ (to the big apple, specifically) as soon as he got his second degree. heโd just need to make the money first.
it was then, rather tragically, that rory realised most of his efforts were for naught. the arts was rarely a rewarding, reliable investment when it came to being a career choice, and in todayโs climate having degrees meant little in comparison to real, actual experience.ย
with his agent, sid, and an urge to make something of everything heโd done throughout his life, rory took it day by day. he picked up a job at the coffee shop where he spent most of his college days to pay the bills.ย
to have such a premature start to life outside of education/academia was jarring, and rory found himself sailing at sea without a paddle. and even then, he and sid continued to work tirelessly in hopes that rory would finally swing big.
he has had an occasional installation at bohemian, up-and-coming art galleries across london, typically soho, but they never stuck. a man that struggled to express himself, many critics scolded rory for playing cards too close to his chest. โhe insisted upon his mystery.โ to this day, rory still didnโt understand what they meant.ย
at last, he made the money to finally move over to the big apple, where his life would โbeginโ, at the ripe age of 29, just 365 days or so away from the dreaded thirty. it took him no time at all to pick up a job at a coffee shop not far from where he was living.
he started work part-time on the production side of things both off-broadway and in broadway, again, to make ends meet, and because it stood as a reminder to what he loved. once, in the wake of a rather brief, tumultuous affair with a director of a production of phantom, the idea that he took to the stage as an actor was proposed. this was the first and the last time anyone ever thought to even suggest an idea such as this to rory.
a poetry book and a novel that have both been a work in progress for most, if not all, of roryโs adult life are within the mind factory, and sid eagerly pestered rory for these to see the light of day. somehow, though, with all of these unexpected obstacles that prohibit his yearning to create, drawing inspiration to bring these projects to completion felt like an impossible task.
after a brief โrehabilitativeโ break, visiting his mother and step-father in galway, rory is back in the city after just over a year of silence. sidโs eager, so is he. but itโs not a matter of desire, rory had always wanted it, it just didnโt seem to want him.
Wanted Connections!
regular customers! i would really enjoy some regulars in beanz that rory has made nice with, some of his more authentic connections that could be considered his closest concept to a โfriendโ (though itโs likely he diminishes their value by the professional, work-based environment in which their relationship is founded)
a muse. someone that, despite roryโs horrendous luck, serves to creatively drive him even now. it could be romantic, it could be platonic, but they have a relationship that rory has never experienced with anyone else. and, even if he holds this individual dear, heโs willing to plagiarise their life if it means he finally gets the big break.
and they were roommates. i picture a small group that he lives with (itโs highly unlikely rory can afford to live alone). maybe 2-3? heโs a rather inoffensive guy (which could, in turn, offend people) so he can have any manner of relationship with these roommates.ย ย
a casual affair. i picture this involving either an individual who is closely involved in the industry he wants to carve his way into, or, instead, someone who is so completely removed from the industry that itโs almost an escape. he, again, hyper-focused on his ambition for fame and success, probably hasnโt even considered this being anything more than casual.
But i am also SO SO down for anything and everything people can see as potential for my silly little loverboy <3
