Keziah Whitson Coles Valentine. Taken in Brookhaven circa 1880-85.  Family legend was that she hated having her photo taken, and that this was done so in secret.  As it turns out, there are at least half a dozen of her in my collection, so perhaps Keziah only turned camera shy in her later years.

The Barteau Cemetery.  Off of South County road, have to hike through some underbrush to reach. Somebody has been generally taking care of it.  The Barteau family came to New York from Brittany in the late 17th century (Francis/Francois), and within a couple of generations a branch had settled in Fireplace (now Brookhaven) in the early 18th century.  Many of the early family members are buried here, with others in nearby Patchogue.

Sarah Hewlett (1788-1871).  Born in Cold Spring Harbor, married John Coles Hewlett in 1805, and later Judge Singleton Mitchell in 1831.

Martha Titus Valentine of Oyster Bay (1791-1880).  My great grandmother wrote of her as having blue eyes and very pretty.  One of scores of Quakers in my Long Island roots, she’s buried at Friends Burying Ground, Matinecock.
