alex-hyunâ:
âNice to meet you, Zhilei. Alex Hyun. Iâm a mechanic at Gearworks downtown,â he said, hooking his thumb over his shoulder, as if the place were just outside, even if it wasnât. âWhat can I say? I love a good side project,â he lied with a saccharine smile. Although he was warming up to the kids, at least. And some of them seemed to have warmed up to him, too. It wasnât a stretch to say he did have a soft spot for those kids who felt like little reflections of himself as heâd been once upon a very long time ago.
Was it time to go home yet?
Ugh! It talked too. . .
Clearly this human had been raised in a Tasmanian barn. Zoe nearly winced at Nate's little pet humans plebeian accent, but only just managed to stop herself. What was that sound? Drelict Fijian? Australian patois for the impecunious set? He was in America and yet speaking as if someone should have shook free his green card and a residency visa. Had the man no education?
Zoe highly doubted it. . .
Public school was hardly more than pre-prison prep, and Alexander looked only a jumpsuit and a shank away from the pen. He was even wearing, or stole one of Nate's best shirts (she knew all of Nate's clothing since his aunt often consulted Zoe for her "chic youthful opinions".). That was Valentino couture for the love of all that was fashion, and Nate was letting his muscle head chimp damn near split the seams in the arms by rolling up the sleeves. Zoe's jaw tightened just slightly at that horrible fact before she could bring herself to speak again.
"Well met, I'm sure. . .ah, Alex?" Did this boyband rejected street urchin posing as a man really work for Gearworks downtown? Zoe could hardly believe that, particularly given the owner. She had never personally taken her cars to Gearworks, (preferring their competitors "New World Foreign Cars" that were completely loyal to Hangzhou Coven). New World Foreign were on the other side of the river (and somewhat of a pain to drive to), but at least they wouldn't dislodge her damn protective runes embedded in the glove compartment or screw with her spell work by touching things best left untouched under the hood.
Still she had definitely heard of Gearworks fabled "Woman On Top" lady boss, Martina "Marty" Calderon. They didn't run in the same circles obviously (mainly cause Ms. Calderon was after all just a silly human). Still, Zoe had heard the fiery female was the closest humans came to being dragons. She was wealthy and self-assured, all while she ran Gearworks without even a silent investment from any of the usual fractions. How the woman still lived was a miracle, especially since, Calderon also did just as she pleased right in the boundary of some coveted and highly necessary witch territory. . .
Hangzhou, and with them Zoe's own mother remained vex that Calderon had refused to be properly bought out for years. Gearworks sat on a powerful ley line and not a single witch had access to it because of the intractable mortal and her blasted business. The annoying woman's obstinate nature, and well payed lawyers had blocked the coven from placing another power front in Gearworks place and extending the Hangzhou territory.
Zoe did a slow once over of Alex. Perhaps if she played her cards right she might make this pitiful excuse of a human toy boy here bring his troublesome boss right to the coven on a silver plate for the annual solstice fete. A little champagne and the right spells and Calderon would be eating from her fingers like the well trained dog all humans were destined to be someday. Sacrificing Nate's new interloping pet to Lord Cernunnos for solstice blessings on the same night, well that would just be a bonus. . .
"Mhm. . .Gearworks. Calderon, Martina isn't it? Your boss, right? I've heard of her, mostly word of mouth. Supposedly she's quite the tough stuff self starter entrepreneurâhow odd that one of her valued employees would stray into the reach of the laws long arm. You are Nate's parolee are you not?" Zoe's voice was as icy cool and sweetly flavored as newly shaved baobing.
"Zoe. . ." There was a hint of warning in Nate's voice, warning she had no intention of heeding of course.
"What? I'm only speaking the truthâam I not? You never said it was a secret Natty. Am not offending you am I, Alex?" She was all tender innocence as she swayed closer to Alex. To his credit he didnât eye her blatantly, only tipped a nod to her direction and yammered on about Gearworks, while pointing his thumb as if his place of work were simply down the block.
He also seemed oblivious to her charms, since not a single eye fell to her perky tits. Well they could not have that, it would be a waste of a perfectly good Bordelle balconette bra. Mentally she pushed her pheromones higher. No man could resist a bit of witch enhanced hormonal glamour, not even Nate, though Nate usually passed out when she pressed him too hard, poor virgin he was. But this human pet of his? Zoe doubted Alex even remembered what virginity was. She was gonna house break him starting right now. She'd have Mr. Convict here willing to suck her toes like they were covered in spun sugar floss and candied fruit like it was his religion, before the night ended.
Nate wasn't sure why, but the way Zoe looked at Alex bothered him. Something hard lurked behind her eyes, something secretive that made Nate's neck prickle and his stomach knot more than the thought of Zoe making him share an appetizer plate of escargots Ă la bourguignonne with her.
"Oh psh! Look at that face on you Nate!" She chirped kissing him on the cheek, and fluttering her fingers as she glided away. The gesture being as meaningless as the casual look of interest she turned on Alexander. "He gets so flustered. My word you worry wart, now don't be jealous. I'm sure Alex is going to be nothing but a gentleman tonight. I believe he and I will be the best of friends too. Won't we Alex? Now, why don't you tell me all about how you two met. I bet it was delightful."
Ignoring Nate's meaningful eye signals, she summoned up her power and willed it to flow through her veins. Usually she would not be so public with her magic, after all Nate knew nothing of their true relationship, but Alex was a problem she wanted dealt with swiftly. Couldn't have more humans getting too comfortable around Nate. As it was his meddlesome partner, that trash mouth little miniature dick-less wonder Mena the dyke was already more of a complication than Zoe would have preferred. Â
"Bon, on y va ?" she said close to Alexâs ear, reaching for the human with both hands and power. Her gaze flicked up to meet his. Magic unseen flowed between them. She could sense something inside him, something small, but sharp, with a shadow that was slowly spreading. The shock quickly brought her up short. Was that coming from the human? What the hell was it even? Zoe blinked, before finally laying a hand on the Alex's forearm carefully. She tried to battle it, tried to conquer it, then tried to confine it, but she could sense it diffusing through his system slipping from her magical lure like pig in grease. It was the barest curl of otherness, very faint like some half forgotten arcane memory right beneath the contact, not real power but offensively abhorrent enough that she nearly stuck out at him in self-defense. As it was she just barely managed to compose herself, and yank her fingers away with a jerky swiftness.Â
How had a stupid human managed to evade her magic?
"Votre table est prĂŞte, tout le monde!"Â Â Nate was never so happy to see a maĂŽtre d'hĂ´tel gesturing his way in all his life. Worried Zoe was going to say something more they would both later regret dearly, he stepped smoothly between she and Alex quite thoroughly blocking Zoe's sudden and quite near out and out rude physical withdrawal.
"You can go first Alex. Youâre our guest tonight. We're right behind you!" Nate covered over as brightly as he could, even forcing what he hoped was an encouraging smile free.Â

alex-hyunâ:
It didnât take long for him to get ready. He undid the top two buttons, giving himself a little more of a casual look, then grabbed his old shirt, rolling it up tightly into a tight cylinder in his hand, and walked out of the bathroom again looking for Nate. When he finally found him, he gave a little half-turn, then stood up straight. âAlright. What do you think? I mean, I could always just go home and shower properly or whatever and meet you there, but if you think I look alright, then Iâm good to go, mate,â he said with a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
When Alex returned, Nate just stared at him for a couple of seconds bereft of words and coherent thought. He did not quite recall that particular grey dress shirt ever having looked as good on he himself. It was definitely a bit snug around the broad shoulders of the formerly rough hewed mechanic, yet somehow a freshened up Alex made it look effortlessly chic, more expensive and suavely rogueish all at once. Moreover Alex was smiling wrylyâbut even that kind of smile was a sexy smile.
The greasy duckling had become a sleek swan. . .
"Y-yes," Nate said, trying to remember how to swallow around the suddenly dry desert that was now his throat. Alex was a sight he absorbed in one dizzying glance: every hard-edged, clean-cut detail, from the playful mirth of the mechanics eyes, to even the way his top button was yanked impatiently open to reveal a tiny peek of wicked artistic black tattoo ink over sleek muscles. Every detail Nate became acutely aware of. What the hell was wrong with him?
"Uh I mean, you look alright. . .um. . .nice."
Lies.
The world was standing still. Alex looked amazing! Warmth suffused Nate's chest and lightly stained his face and neck soft pink. His thoughts raced and not in a direction he would have wished. Should he really let Zoe meet Alex while he was dressed so. . .well like this? Wait. Why should it even matter?
He was not interested in a man, and even if he might be, Alexander Hyun was the absolute worst possible choice for a lover. Besides, Hyun probably had thousands of women, and men clambering his door, and clearly he wasn't very picky about either if the night at that club was any indication of his usual socialization. Nate immediately regretted that train of thought. God help him but he was all but thinking about this man, whom to be clear he wasn't even sure he liked as person yet, like some jealous husband whose spouse was wearing a too short skirt out in public. That realization was like a bucket of icy water right to the stupor Nate had found himself in.
You clean up real well Mr. Hyun,â Nate added, finally finding air and a proper voice again. Though what that was supposed to mean even he didnât know, because he was too engrossed in a whole host of foreign sensations that were beginning to attack. Stop it! This was just dinner. Dinner with a new potential acquaintance and his childhood best friend, nothing to be all excited over unnecessarily.
Right?
The drive across town was mostly silent on Nate's end, unless one could call frequent periodic blushing a conversation starter. Unfortunately Nate considered it to be nothing of the sort, however he could not figure out how to make the silence end when his mind continued whirring with the most random of unwelcomed thoughts.
Like the fact that Alex smelled really nice. . .
A little hint of citrus, kinda woodsy. Was it cologne? No, Nate silently realized. Cologne was coying, chemical, Alex smelled natural, cozy even. Nate's whole car was full of the faint masculine amber spice before they even pulled out of the community center parking lot fully. It was so distracting: the heady scent, the feel the vibrations of Alex's body as he slid in, and got comfortable on the passengers side of Nate's Polestar 2. Â
"Huh?"
He'd missed something. Sitting so close to the other male brought about an uncomfortable awareness. Alex said something he didn't quite catch, bringing Nate's fevered brain swirling back to the present from where it had flown off to. It was like being caught with a hand in the sweetie jar. Hoping to cover the shame, he reached to change gears and accidentally brushed his entire hand right along the firm heat of Alex's outer thigh instead.
As Mina would say. . .
Ah fucking hell 'n' shit.
A tiny pop of static lit up the darkened car interior with the brief unintended contact, and for a second Nate panicked, yanking his own hand away. He looked away quickly, gluing his eyes to the road again with a mouthful of apologies.
"Sorry! Sorry that was all me! I attract a lot of static electricity in winter time. Cold dry hands and all, you know. Plus my car is always cold too. Iâm always feeling too hot even in winter, so I tend to forget other people might be cold. Are you cold? Do you want me to turn the heater on? You look a little cold. Plus no more shocks right if youâre both warm? Hehe. Er, I mean what am I saying you are a mechanic, I'm like telling you this and you work with cars all the time. I bet you already know this stuff. Sorry."
On and on words tumbled out like a swelled dam that was overflowing.
Powers to be helped he was babbling pure idiocy, but Nate still was unable to stem the flow of moronic filler. He certainly couldn't lie but he'd be damned before he'd admit how much Alex's presence was effecting him. Him felt stupid, giddy and light headed. Plus the damn man's scent. It made him was inhale even deeper and he had the most insane urge to rub his hand on that firm thigh again. . .
What in the hell was he thinking?!
This was not rational! This was not him! Furthermore Alexander Hyun was a guy! Not just any guy either, an almost criminal with serious addictive tendencies! He needed Nate's help staying out of trouble, not one more person in a long line of perverts like those weirdos Nate had seen him with in the alley the other night. Nate firmly shook himself. No more weirdly intimate thoughts! He even sped up slightly (though he was still far below the actual legal speed limit), telling himself to get a grip.
Resolute, he drew a deep inward breath and held it, after all it wasn't like he actually needed to breathe anyway. He'd learned long ago as a child to do so out of habit in order to blend in with those around himself. Breath was living, and breathing normal. However right now, there was nothing "normal" about the way Alex was making his stomach twist up in excited knots.
Les Nomades was doing brisk business when they arrived. They even had to wait a few minutes to be seated. It was one of the reasons Nate only came to the place if Zoe insisted. That and of course the petite French portions were ridiculously small for the price.
Wondering if Alex might grow impatient with the delay (and not wanting the other to leave for some odd reason), Nate attempted conversation again, "So Mr. Hyun, have you ever had Frenchâ?"
"Nat!"
The beautifully rich female voice called out in the warmest English only tinted ever so slightly with polished Mandarin undertones. She appeared then framed by the open glass doors of the restaurant. The new arrival was, undeniably, the product of a rarefied luxury environment. Â
Zhilei Chun, as always was smooth and sleek and faultlessly exquisite in a shiny sequinned black cocktail hour creation that did tremendous things for her wonderful figure, strappy designer shoes to match and with her inky tresses stroking over one creamy pale exposed shoulder. The curves of her body were amazing. The ensemble combined with her stunning beauty, had attracted notice from the instant that sheâd strolled into the restaurant. Oblivious to the appreciative stares she made a beeline for Nate and Alex. Smirking she held out a hand to Nate as she joined them by the maĂŽtre d'podium.
"Well this is a first Officer Lim! You beating me somewhere in that utility van of yours. Am I dreaming or where you more eager for a taste of Coq au Vin tonight than you led me to first believe? " Zoe scoffed at Nate lightly. She was delighted he had changed his mind tonight. Her power reserves had begun to get low and he was always a very nice pick-me up. Like pouring liquid NOS in her proverbial magic tank.
"As I remember you were trying beg off our date night. Then right as I was about to make other plans you decide to throw your poor lonesome childhood friend a bone. Vous allez bien?" Zoe continued to tease him, entwining their fingers. She knew Nate he might not like the contact but he was far too much a gentleman to pull away either. The selfless honor she felt in him when they had been children remained to this day. If anything it had only grown stronger as he aged. It was one of Nates more annoying features but quite useful at times like this when Zoe could manipulate the trait to her own means.
"Zoe it not like that and you know it. I just work long hours is all. I've said this. . ." Nate explained sheepishly for what seemed the millionth time in his own mind, then almost in apology tucked Zoe's dainty manicured hand in his own. "Please be nice to my poor car, you know it can't keep up with that hot wheels monster garage you own, and you well know thatâspeaking of! Zoe, this is Alex! Alexander Hyun. I think you will like him, he works with your favorite kinds of toys. He's the guy I was telling you about. He's volunteering at the center with me and helping out Molly's kids with a little refurbishing project."
"Oh?" Her lips twitched. She only vaguely remembered Nate yammering on about some parolee or other. Zoe turned the cool icy beauty of twin sable orbs fringed in thick lashes of onyx twilight on Alex assessing him shrewdly. Handsome, but certainly not to her tastes. His midnight eyes were far too arrogant and set over a jaw line much to willful by leaps and bounds. It didn't take even a weak witch to know that "Alex" was Nate's near total intrinsic polar opposite. Was this some joke? The man looked like some reject from an indie bandâcomplete with what she was sure was a body full of tattoo ink. Where the hell had Nate unearthed this mangy stray from?
Disgusting.
"Mhm. Zhilei Chun. . .enchantĂŠ." Zoe murmured demurely, despite her eyes narrowing on Alex over a forced hollow empty smile.
It was all she could do not to stamp a designer shod foot out of frustration. Seething silently, she cursed everything but especially this strangers unwelcome presence. Damn Natanael Tian Qi Lim and his bleeding fucking heart! This was suppose to be a nice dinner date for just they two. She needed to siphon from Nate and she couldn't do so efficiently with Mr. Goodwill Convict loafing about.
alex-hyunâ:
âYou uh⌠got plans for food tonight?â he asked. Alex didnât know where the hell that came from. Itâs not like he could cook. Maybe he could get take out. Heâd planned on just keeping his head down and going straight home, but it seemed like his brain had other plans as he posed the question for the other. Maybe he liked Nate more than he let himself admit.Â
Fuck.
1600 S Pulaski Road (Beat) 9AM
How is his hand not burning?Â
I know I told them to make his coffee hot as the Sahara lighting up in hell, and he's still not even using so much as a cardboard cozy. . .
It took a moment for Nate to realize the words he'd heard clear as a Christmas bell in his head, weren't being said aloud, but had come instead from somewhere in Mena's thoughts. Blinking quickly, he only barely bit back the response in time. Close. Too close to revealing his secrets, and all because he had been taking too long looking at the little boy that had just darted out pass their parked patrol car like a scurrying little mouse. For a moment, the kid had looked their way, and a whisper of humid air lifted shaggy dark curls from wide deer like black eyes. Sitting in the patrol car he and Mena were almost level with the much smaller child.Â
A good-looking little kid but with melancholy haunted look darkening his features. Haunted like Alexander, go on say it you know that it is true, he has troubled eyes like the man you wonât stop trying to save, his traitorous mind murmured past Mena's invasive concerns about why his coffee had yet to give him third degree burns. Pale and thin, the kid had looked exhausted, and unhappy despite the ball he had just chased and now had clasped tightly in one hand. Nate caught the solemn little gaze just long enough to see a familiar lively intelligence, before like a rabbit the kid darted away again without so much as a word or wave. Not unusual, they were cops after all. Any other time a child running away from them would not have bothered Nate at all, today was different though, today the kid reminded him of last night and too many things he wanted to forget.Â
"Mena. What's around here? Any schools?"
Mena snorted, and then chortled into her coffee. She was use to Lim going off topic and doing or (more often) saying odd things (like being unbothered while holding a scalding cup of joe sans thermal recycled cup sleeve). "It's summer Lim. Schools out, any kids out now are off for a another month at least. . ."
"But that kid. Â ." Nate insisted eyes still at the spot just over their hood where the small body had been. "We should. . ."
"No Lim, just no." Mena looked at him sharply as if he had lost his mind, before finally shaking her head. "Nate we're cops, not social workers and the kid was just chasing a ball. Youâre making too much of nothing. We're not gonna stalk some little street munchkin while we're suppose to be on-duty for real baddies, because you're looking to fill that center you volunteer at with more little foundling waifs. Besides you never did tell me how your little window shopping expedition went."
Crap!
He'd forgotten he'd told Mena that he was going to Underground VIP to scope out the attire, and hopeful figure out why Pontiac was so adamant it had to be him being the decoy. Lying about last night was of course out of the question. If he lied Mena was definitely gonna forget all about the coffee not burning him, as she watched him painfully blood from every orifice and pore for no good damn reason at all. Itâd be pictures at eleven and not for him doing his actual job. Besides he didn't really wanna wash more blood out of his uniform.
"I went. . ." He hoped his bland disinterested tone would make her drop it, but Mena put her own cup down and turned to him expectantly.Â
Yep.Â
She wanted details.Â
Damn.
He drew a deep breath, trying to sort through the details he could tell that wouldnât sound like he needed to be in locked in a padded room wearing a jacket with straps and find words he could say that wouldn't constitute actual out and out lying.Â
"It's like Pontiac said. Nightclub. Pretty young crowd, definitely not my usual kind of scene personally. I'll really have to practice my cover to fit in. I didn't see any drug deals being made that particular night. . ."
No, I just saw my parolee nearly get himself raped in an alleyway, then I simply blacked out for I don't know how long, and had to carry him home over the rooftops of the city. Yea, no way was he gonna add the last bit of the tale. Mena would think he had snapped. Heck if he didn't already know better he would hardly believe the madness himself. It seemed more like some insane comic book adventure. However, he could say the same about his hearing peoples thoughts, his strength, speed, the fact that he was never sick or ill, the jumps that cleared buildings or the fact that even the slightest cuts and piercing almost instantly healed or rejected the damage completely. He was like some strange freak show mutant already so why not believe his night had become what it had.Â
Mena didnât let up, and waited for him to be a little more specific, so in a resigned voice he added finally. "Alexander Hyun was there. . ."
"Alexanderâwho isâ? Wait! Are you talking about that trashboy drunk biker with the hot girlfriend we tossed in the tank a few weeks back?!" She closed her eyes, as if she were making a wish for patience. Nate had seen her use the very same look with Shaye many times. Frankly he cared for the look as much as the toddler probably did.
Opening her eyes again she pinned Nate in a laser gaze. "Tell me youâre not still in contact with a possible perp Lim. That guys was nothing but trouble from his boots to the bike he could have killed someone with that night, very likely himself.â When he flushed, Mena hit the steering wheel with an open palm in frustration. Lim was gonna be the death of her, the literal career killing death, with his incurable bleeding heart syndrome. âWhat did you do?"
"He's really not that bad Mena. . .I mean we do live in the same apartment complex." He admitted guiltily, only belatedly realizing he may have said too much.Â
"How do you evenâ?! No! No! The less I know the better, so that when you get hemmed up by IIB later, I can claim plausible deniability and don't have to testify against my own damn partner! Look Lim, you can't save everyone! Furthermore, if you try especially with a lowlife like that guy you're gonna find yourself sitting right next to him in a courtroom, also clinked up in cuffs."
When Nate remained stubbornly silent, Mena gave his arm a little punch, before wincing slightly and having to shake out some quickly numbing fingers. Hitting Nate, even in jest was always like smacking her knuckles into over heated forged steel. She often wonder what he lifted to make his muscles so damn hard and solid. Still she'd take the bruising to get through to her too good for this cruel world partner.Â
Nate was a true altruist. He gave too much of himself, and oddly expected not even the slightest in returns. His ability to tolerate and care for both a penurious aunt, and that demanding elitist socialite Zhilei Chun, whom he called friend were certainly proof to Mena Natanael Lim had the patience of a saint and the benevolence of an angel. Â Â
Unfortunately, that also meant he wouldn't see a slick manipulator the likes of Alexander Hyun coming until it was too late. She's was definitely gonna have keep a closer eye on Nate from now on. She looked at him now and the silence seemed to go on forever as he gazed out at the empty block, once again lost in his own Limland of too much compassion and misplaced empathy.Â

Hello Jasmine 2026 S Clark St, Chinatown 1PM
They were having a quick lunch at Hello Jasmine's of fish tofu and fried noodles with Dillion (Nate's choice since he was the only one of them fluent enough in Mandarin to order the dishes properly), when he floored Mena again with an abrupt Q and A of:Â
"When did you guys know you were gay?"
Dillion made a strange choking sound, before turning to dig in the little waist pack that accented her slim former models figureâmost likely trying to hide scarlet tinged cheeks while pretending that she hadn't just heard what her wife's partner had just asked. Mena was not nearly one for such subtleties.
"Say what? What the hell Lim?! What kinda question is that even?" Mena was also more than a little familiar with Nate's habit of more often than not bluntly speaking his mind, or finding the most random inane of questions. Really the man was sometimes worse than Shaye, in public and innocent the point of Mena having to remind herself they were almost the same age. His uppity aunt had sheltered him near to the point of virtual repression so Mena was way less shocked than Dillion that her partner had gonna all "inquisitive minds would like to know" on them. Knowing his aunt, the uptight snob would probably disown him if he even asked what a condom was.Â
"I said when did you know?" he insisted quietly.
At least he had the grace to looked as horrifyingly embarrassed as she felt. Before Mena could firmly tell him off, Dillion apparently feeling this was good parental skills practicing time, laid a gentle long fingered hand on Mena's stilling her instantly. Dillion had that kinda power, she was the calmest most soothing person in the world and Mena was thankful everyday that she was all hers.Â
"The first time married my two female Barbie dolls to each other and made the Ken doll their officiant." Dillion eventually said amusement lightening her big velvet soft eyes and lifting one side of her mouth into the crooked little half smile Mena always wanted kiss to see if she could make it straight. "Is there something else you wanted to know? Something more personal perhaps?"
Why is my wife so damn perfect? Mena thought and only barely resisted the urge to sneak away with Dillion to the ladies room and remind her why she loved her so much. Unfortunately, Nate seemed intent on getting his answers and he was looking expectantly at her now.
Shit!
The man was relentless!
"Not til I met Dil." Mena grumbled, feeling only slightly mollified when Dillion squeezed her hand in tender understanding.Â
Dillion always said it was OK that she wasn't some gold star lesbian, but she still felt bad because she wanted to be. For Dillion she wanted to have come pure and untouched like fallen snow. Dillion deserved it. Instead what she had gotten was the wild bang anything with a dick and a pulse slut she had once been. Before Dillion was a murky haze of too many late nights in beds she'd sooner forget with men she wish she'd never meet much less fucked. For a moment she hated that Nate's prying brought it all back to her in that instant.Â
"Dillion was my first love. My only love. I don't think about it as a knowing anything other than that. Just a tip Lim, most people don't on the average like labels or discussing their sexual preferences over food. So please stuff your face with more deep fried starch and stop the interrogations." Mena finished firmly, daring Nate with her eyes to believe different, but as usual, Lim gaze had glazed over in deep thought. He rarely got offend, not even when he was chastised. Mena could not wait for the day when someone made him cringe and simper in abject horror. She was gonna give the one who did the biggest bottle of champagne in thanks. Until then, she just accepted Nate would always be Nate.Â
Right then he had resumed his Nate-ness, as whatever Nate had been curious about, he'd either found or forgotten. Sometimes she wanted to throttle her partner. Luck for him, his muscle were so hard, or she might have just tried today.

Homan Square Community Center 3PM
"Necromancer. I'm sure of it!" Molly said firmly and pointed to a ancient gilt page in her great-grandmère's thickest grimoire of Fae histories. The grimoire was an original, back when pages were still hand written in the most ornate Latin and the linen of the pages had to be sanded so the fine inks could not run. Sometimes Molly was sure she could even smell great-grandmère's lavender and honeysuckle perfume faintly clinging to the pages.
"Born without without right nor Rede, nurtured from blood of the unclean beasts. Demon blood. That's why he smelt like a demon to you. Necromancer are raised from the brink of death by demon blood. . ." Molly mused, her voice taking on a thoughtful tone.Â
âFascinating. . .â
Silkfleck did not appear to think their new volunteer and his possible heritage were the least bit fascinating at all. The Broonie flapped and danced on the vintage page until, Molly was finally forced to shoo the insolent little Fae creature away and on to her desk once more.Â
"That is a enough of that sir! Have a care, please. This is my finest inheritance you're tapping your pink little toes upon. I've no idea where those paws of yours have been, nor when they were last bathed! I'll also thank you to not be so prejudice, or use such language. Necromancers are still Fae. . .mostly."
Actually, Molly wasn't quite certain that was altogether accurate. According to great-grandmère's book, Necromancers also had stolen human souls, a thing no other witch (or any other Fae being) possessed. It had been at least a half century since she'd last known of even one such witch or warlock anywhere in these parts. Even then she had been no more than a girl herself newly immigrated to the colonies and her own coven only spoke of the Necromancers as rumors to frighten the witchling children to eat all their vegetables and herbs. Of course, even if a witch or warlock had the unfortunately luck to be born one as such, most quickly learned after the burning times to definitely keep such a foul birthright to themselves. Other witches and warlock certainly looked unkindly upon those of the path of The Undying Living Death.Â
Silkfleck held up an indignant chin, squeaking rapidly.Â
"Dearest heart no. Think about what you are asking. It would be quite crass of me to cast such a spell when the boy is barely empowered enough to speak an incantation on his own. I dare say the young Mr. Hyun is unaware like our dear Officer Lim of his own abilities. Even if he were not, I would be breaking my promise to her ladyship as a witch. Honestly do you really want the Queen Mother herself paying us all a visit for breaching the balance? And over a baby acolyte who probably still couldn't figure out how to light a hearth with a wand and map?"
For a moment, Silkfleck looked as if he were suffering a mild mouse stroke and crisis of conscience all at once. All knew of the Lady Eve. Mother Moon, goddess of all that was wild and free took vows seriously, her own and more importantly those of her "children". Her humor was as fickle as a storm and her temper at least doubly so. Summoning her for anything not of the utmost significance, was a fools quickly regrettable folly. Aside from that, all Fae knew of the fabled "choice" she gave Necromancersâblood for soulânot even Silkfleck wasn't quite that territorial.
"Yes. Exactly. For now we will do nothing. If the boy, and that is a truly big "if", appears to have less than a gentleman's intent. . ." she sigh, hoping Alexander Hyun would not betray the trust she had extended him. She'd hate to have to place a immovable curse on such a diligent volunteer. Especially since the children had begun to take a shine to him. "Well then I will reconsider." Closing great-grandmère's ornate grimoire firmly on the discussion, Molly returned the vintage volume to her bookcase, where it promptly took on the appearance of a very large and very old dust layer covered vintage French-English dictionary.

Somewhere over the rooftops of North Lawndale . . .Â
They sensed it.
There are those things that should not exist. Things that tipped the scale and ruined the balance. Cold of heart, bereft of soul. Dark whispers hiding so carefully at the seat of their creators perfection. All were nightmares that once given form, could never be put back into the dreamscape.Â
This was not like other evils.
There was always war, after all there could be no light without the blackest of night. Even perfection must have balance. However, this kind of wrongness superseded even that small boon. This was a grudge even older than that, held in the breast of a beast that they could no longer remember the name of. The monster was here, it was here and much too close to the little one.
My little one. . .
Tears rolled down their face, they would not be able to protect him when the danger came. He was of their very own, but the creator would never allow him to return.
Even paradise had rules.

Alex was being very well behaved. . .
A little too well behaved.
So well behaved that Nate saw neither hide nor hair of the man all afternoon. He was definitely in the center, and on time, Nate had seen that two wheeled rolling death trap of his parked in the centers front lot. And while Nate hadn't deliberately intended to bump into  the other man, when a legitimate excuse presented itselfâin the form of a Molly asking him to stay a bit later with the karate students âhe didn't hesitate to seize it.Â
The extra time with the kids was a good cool down, but more importantly, it helped work off some of his frustration at not being able to read Alexander Hyun's thoughts. Did he remember anything from the night before? The guy had been pretty wasted but sometimes morning brought new clarity. Could that be the reason he was so scarce?
âBye Officer Lim!"Â
When the students left, Nate still didn't have a moment to see if he could find Alexander, as his phone immediately began it's familiar complex violin like mobile jangling of Paganiniâs 24th Caprice.
Zoey.
"You're taking me to dinner tonight!"
The imperious feminine tone, brought him up short. Dinner? Had he made plans with Zoey tonight? He could remember no such thing, and nearly said as much as the woman on the other end of the line launched into a bright drivel of the newest restaurant trends she wanted to try. Out of respect he avoided an attempt to read Zoey's thoughts as she described the minute differences between the taste and flavor composition in Bordeaux versus Provence cuisine. Zhilei Chun was his oldest and dearest friend, furthermore she made it no secret that she wanted to marry him one day. Somehow Nate doubted not trusting one's potiential spouse and reading their thoughts crossed a rather taboo line of integrity of some sort, so he didn't. He treated Zoey as preciously as he did his aunt.
"So you want French for dinner, got it." Nate suppressed a smile. . .

You uh⌠got plans for food tonight?
A mixture of anxiety and pleasure tumbled through Nate, leaving him wondering where the hell it had come from. Still agitated about Alexander's memory, it was a moment before Nate even realized what the man was asking something of him that needed attention.
"Food?" Damn! He'd promised Zoe Les Nomades tonight though! "Well. . .actually. . ."
Why not bring Alexander along? Zoey was his oldest dearest friend and Alexander could certainly use more quality people in his life. Besides he was pretty hard to resist when he smelled so. . .nice. That very special Alexander Hyun mix of with the fresh air, woody sweetness and citrus male musk, that was still just a little intoxicatingwhen he stood so close.
"Uh. . .well I hadâhave plans," Nate squirmed inside. Had? Was he really thinking of blowing off poor Zoey for his musclehead of a neighbor? Furthermore, what did he think he was doing, sniffing the poor man?! He tried again concentrating on speaking and not the weird sensation of  the irregular pulse fluttering right below his ear.
"I was taking a friend of mine to dinner, at Les Nomades." Why was he talking so high and fast? Could Mr. Hyun hear that? His tongue stuck to the roof of his own mouth. It lasted about a whole second. "Woud you like to come? My treat. You should come! I brought my own car to today, not the patrol vehicle."
He might want to spend more time around Hyun for some insane reason he didn't understand at all, but he certainly was not risking limbs, concussion or death on that motorized contraption of Alexander's to do it. Besides Les Nomades was a classy kind of place, he could not have a wind blown tattooed Alex rolling up to the valet in a t-shirt and skin tight jeans that appeared painted on to his body in some places.
Even if Alexander did look kinda good with the wind in his hair.
"If you want to come, I'll can loan you a dress shirt. We're roughly about the same size, so it should fit and I always have a spare in my car, since honestly I spend enough time in a uniform that I'd rather not wear one to dinner too.â Actually, Alexander Hyun was a bit taller and broader in his shoulder areaâbut Nate wore his clothes a size up for comfort so Hyun shouldn't feel too constricted. Luckily Les Nomades was more of a business casual eatery and not black tie kind of place..

River City Apartments, 11:36 A.M.
His head felt like it had been split in two. The dull light that made its way through the curtains of his bedroom felt like too much, and Alex struggled to recall what the hell happened the night before. He chalked it up to another night of incredible partying, but couldnât remember anything past having a few drinks with a pair of hot models.
Alex took a deep breath, turning on his side. How did he end up on his own bed? His eyes fluttered open just enough to see a bottle of water and a couple of ibuprofen sitting there, as if waiting for him. Who⌠how? Did past Alex know future Alex would end up like this? He didnât think about it overmuch as he reached out for the pills, slipping them between his lips. He propped himself up just enough to take a few swigs of water before sliding back down to get more sleep.
Pepper hopped up onto the bed, licking Alexâs face.
âMmm⌠Pep⌠NoâŚâ Alex groaned, shielding his face a little. âUgh⌠Iâll take you out later. Remind me never to drop acid again,â he joked as she trotted to the open space on the bed beside him and curled up. Flashes of nightmarish images came to mind, but Alex told himself it wasnât real. None of it was. It was all in his head, and sometimes he had a good roll, but sometimes he had a bad trip.
Only Pepper saw what had happened. Only she saw the way someone else carried her human inside and put him to bed. Only she witnessed the way the kind man kept him from choking on his own vomit and stayed with him for a while, pushing his hair away from his face. It was he who put water on the night stand as well as human medicine. It was he who gave her ear scritches and a treat from the jar on the counter, speaking to her in a language that was new to her, but which she could understand nonetheless. She liked him, despite the blood stains on his shirt and the weapon she could smell on him. He was not like the others Alex frequently brought to the apartment. Her tail wagged with gratitude.
Thank you for bringing him back home.
11TH DISTRICT STATION. 12AM
âHey rookie. Got something for youâŚâ
The heavy police file plunked hard down right by Nateâs arm, nearly taking his elbow off with it. His eyes flicked briefly over it and then over to Menaâs silently raised brows before meeting the smirking face above her head. It was the kind of insincere beaming that never meant anything good for the rest of them in the eleventh district, so Nate wearily took the bait. Dread settled in his gut, as he glanced up at the senior vice detective.Â
âWhat is that?â
âYou always chomping at the bit about having more "responsibilityâ ainât cha? so I brought you some.â The booming voice of Ranato Pontiac could be heard all over the precinct. He was very obviously performing for the rest of the station, everyone knew he couldnât stand most of the beat patrols, and thought rookies were less than ants. Nate wasnât fooled for a minute but he extracted a fistful of black-and-white surveillance prints from the file folder anyway. After separating them into sequence, he studied each one, starting with what looked like a nondescript doorway and beefy look out.
"I donât get it, this isnât even my beat. ItâŚlooks like a nightclub of some sort.â He shrugged.
âWell damn, give the rookie a cookie! Look closer kid. Open dealing, gambling, suspected trafficking, underage thots at the bar. Itâs got all that and more. This is a gift Iâm giving youâso say thanks!â Pontiac crossed his arms, dark brows pulling tight over his narrowed eyes. âUnderground VIP Lounge, we need someone to go in and do a little recon. Word on the street, some new designer dust is making its way there from overseas. Stuffâs potent, I got me two ice cubes in the morgue now that ODed on the junk. Untraceable. Doc canât even say how much they got in their system. Shitâs like invisible or something. I need ears on the next shipment, and you just got promoted to the gig, kid.â
Mena shook her head, pointing at the file. âThatâs not our department. Why arenât yaâll in vice handling thisâwhy pull Nate in on an undercover? He doesnât have the experience!â
âFrankly, I would have sent you Legs, I mean you do got the better tetas after all.â Pontiac, winked ending in a slow rude wolfish whistle. âBut as you so quick to remind us all, you got that wife and kid at home. What are you his mommy now too?â
âYou donât.â Mena visibly bristling, challenged right back viper fast and flashing a hard distrustful stare. âYou ainât married. Got no kids either, and youâre vice unlike us.â
Pontiac jutted his chin toward the pile of photos on Nateâs desk. âNot fuckinâ likely muĂąecaâlook at that place. Full wet behind the ears kids like the rookie here. Whole place is mostly UC monied party brats, tanked up junior stockbrokers, teen groupies and the like. Me and my guys stroll up in there weâd never get pass the bouncers. Had to wash a lot of hands just to get the prints. The kid here though has that perfect jail bait look, and heâs the right age too so we ainât gotta spring for fresh ID.â
âHow dare yoââ Mena began ready to go toe to toe with Pontiac.
âIâll do it.â
Mena jerk her head back in Nateâs direction, with an audible choking sound. It was a total violation, and he knew it was on Menaâs growing list of rules. They did not make nice with shitheads like Pontiac. She tried to signal her partner to remind him of that little fact, but he refused to look her way. Instead Nate moved closer to the file, and picked up the stack of prints again. He nodded slowly as he examined them, a grimace faintly etched on his pale face. In one of the photos was a familiar dark head, grinning face and part of a tattooist ink laden bare arm.
Alexander Hyun.
Nate shuffled through the pictures again, before studying the one that had Alexander. Already he was resigned to working the case, even with Pontiac on lead. The picture was blurred around the edges as if the taker had caught Hyun right as he was willingly being swallowed into the sea of darkness and disembodied limbs, but it was definitely him. It was Alexander, and this was no old photo. The time stamp had him in the club was nearly as close as just last weekend. Nate did even have to think back long, Hyun claimed he was home last weekend. So heâd lied about watching Netflix with his dog. He probably wasnât even clean or sober like he promised either and he certainly wasnât staying out of trouble by the looks of the photo.
He was shirtless and palming two big handfuls of other peopleâs backsidesâŚ
âAnd you have no clues as to when this mysterious new product is incoming?â Nate asked his voice heavy, even as he ignored Mena still flashing him her patented danger warning eyes. Any other time he would have immediately backed away from the situation, as Mena didnât âwarnâ lightly. Maybe he would explain later, but right now not even he knew why he was agreeing to this.
Liar.
He knew if something bad was coming down the pipes later he need to warn Alexander Hyun away from it. It was one thing for the little muscle head fool to cruise around on his bike like a tanked up wannabe Korean Hellâs Angel, but it was going to be quite another thing, if he was roped up in a vice drug bust that had a bunch of heavy hitters. Pontiac was a dick, but he had a conviction record miles long. Alexander could and would do real time up north, not just a single miserable night floating in the lush tank.
âIf I knew that rookieâwe wouldnât need you! Thatâs your job. Go in throw a little crisp new money around next weekend. Be reckless, splashy, and find out when theyâre bringing the new hotness over. I need names, and dates. Weâll cover you if it gets a little too warm for your beat collar to handle.â Pontiac wagged his head, gave Nate a shade too hard slap on the shoulder, and headed back to his own desk.
SONNYâS BBQ CHICKEN PIT 12:35AM
âYou know you canât trust him!â Mena hissed, starting right in on him, the very moment they sat down at Sonnyâs counter even before Nate could finally savor the delight of actually getting some food after the drag that had been their long stint of catching up on old paperwork. Mena wasnât even bothering keeping to sanctity of silence they agree upon for dinner during overtime shifts, which funnily enough was her rule to begin with.âPontiac has had a hard on for you since practically day one! You have to know this is some kinda set up!â
Nate put a forkful of macaroni and cheese in his mouth, with its shiny creamy walls and salty concord of savory butter and sharp biting processed yellow cheddar. He loved this American food Mena called âSoul Foodâ. He could understand where the name came from too. Eating in a place like Sonnyâs was like getting a cozy hug from a loved one. Nate often thought African-American mothers had much in common with Chinese mothers, and aunties. Their love was not in showy displays of kisses and smothering embraces, but in the stern security of deeply marinated succulently cooked pork innards and hearty thick lashings of home styled starchy sustenance.
âIâll be fine Mena, besides I canât say no. It would look like Iâm not a team player.â Nate finally mumbled around a mouth full of the still piping hot creamed gooey elbow noodles. Around them was the dull din of voices, the hissing of Sonnyâs famous all wood gill, and the roasted scents of itâs creations that rose around them, like hickory smoked ambrosia and manna. âAs for Pontiac, I know not to trust him. Iâm not as naive as he wants to think. Iâm still a cop, and itâs not vanity but I dare say Iâm a better one than he wishes to be.â
âHe doesnât wish nothing of the sort! Heâs just trouble, shit, we should be investigating him!â Mena stabbed a cube of candied yam viciously as if it had done something personally affronting to her. âAside from that, youâre gonna have to go undercover at a club of all places!â
âExcuse me? What is that suppose to mean?â Nate resisted the urge (just barely) to lick his fingers free of Sonnyâs addicting spiced South Carolina Maple rum mesquite barbecue sauce, but only because they were in public. If he was alone, he and his fingers would have gotten way more up close and personal with the remaining bottle of smoky sauce on the table.
âNate. HonâŚâ Mena began lightly, and Nate finished chewing before sighing. Here it came, Mena had that âMomâ tone going. He much preferred her teasing and wise cracks over these matronly lectures. His Auntie An was already more mother than anyone probably should have in life, he didnât need Mena to tap in now too tag team style.
âHave you even ever been to a nightclub, Lim? I mean socially?â
Perceptive. Damn her. The question pricked the hairs on the back of Nateâs neck, and he could feel his face going warm. Mena was even thinking of him as nerd. Maybe in not so many words or  imagery, but he certainly could absorb the deep maternal pity for him glowing front and center in her mind.
For once he wished her thoughts were as silent as Hyunâs wereâŚ
The truth was he really hadnât been to a nightclub before. As a teen An Qui would have killed him if he had snuck out to do anything other than schoolwork, and later in college, heâd been so busy with classes and applying to the academy, the idea of wasting time in a boozy darkened arena getting drunk while going deaf to meet people his own age hadnât seemed really necessary. He was better off alone. Life was easier. More predictable. Quiet. Â "Not really, but how hard can it be. I just have to dress up and listen to some trendy loud music.â
Mena rolled her eyes, and sipped her strawberry lemonade punch. "Sure. Right. How hard could it be for you to blend in at a club, says a man who counts moonwalking among his list of favorite dance moves of all time? Iâm sure itâs gonna be total cake. Do me a favor though, please at least google what to wear for a night out inâwell this century. I better not hear two weeks from now from vice, that you were doing deep cover while rocking those goddamn pleated Burberry Bermuda shorts and boat shoes again. We clear on that Lim?â
It was on the tip of Nateâs tongue to inform Mena, that his designer shorts cost more than a months worth of Sonnyâs meals (with overtime) and then some. Furthermore, he thought his Italian camel leather Brunello Cucinelli boat shoes were quite fetching, and they even had his initials embossed on them in silk thread!
Mena was just a philistine.
OUTSIDE UNDERGROUND VIP LOUNGE 1:34AM
Nate stood in the shadows across the street watching the backdoor of Underground VIP Lounge swing abruptly open every now and then, leaking itâs rhythmic flashes of smoky light and a low thumping beats into the cold, dark alley. He was beginning to feel like heâd picked a really bad spot to observe the comings and goings of the place. Hardly anyone came out and into the alley, those who did, were mostly barbacks in aprons, and the occasional giggly teen or two attempting to circumvent the bouncer in the front by having an older friend sneak them in via the emergency exit. Mostly already drunk, all likely underage, and certainly females, usually squeezed into short, snug, and low-cut shimmery things paint with traffic stopping colors.
No men.
Not helpful. He had long ago given up taking notes on proper club going attire, and frankly at this point was barely staying awake in his shadowy across the street perch. Ready to call his little research mission a bust Nate started to stretch the kink that had settled in his back, when the heavy metal door banged outward, spitting up two figures sandwiching a third between themâall three oblivious to their audience only meters away and continued their obscene grinding in unison.
Ew.
Nate turned away feeling embarrassed by the crude scene on display. All he really wanted was peace and quiet. Tomorrow heâd simply admit defeat to Mena, thinking idly heâd just let her pick something for him to wear to his first undercover gig next weekend. The men across the street were moving funny. He lifted his head a bit, suddenly alert, his sensitive hearing picking up a recognizable accent buried under layers of inebriation.
Alexander? His nostrils, equally more sensitive than a regular humans, twitched in response to the familiar spicy woodsy citrus scent of Alexander Hyun. There were other smells too. Ones of decay, and the faint unpleasantness of soured eggs in the sun all oddly foul scents that had little to do with the trash in the alley. What the hell was Hyun even doing here tonight?! He was suppose to be keeping his nose clean! Nate peered out of the shadows over at the three in the alley, not quite sure why he felt the urgent deep sense of imminent danger. Alexander Hyun was a grown man after all, one on parole of course, but still there was nothing in his release that said he couldnât be handsy in an alleyway with strangers if thatâs what floated his boat. Certainly he was out numbered, but it wasnât like Nate hadnât been on the receiving end of his inappropriate attentions before. If fact, Nate was begining to suspect the man of being fantastically hedonistically homosexual.
Geez, he probably had a sex addiction problem along with all his other onesâŚ
âNo, waitâŚ.â
That accent again. This time slurred with notes of resignation, intoxication and unwillingness. An instant later, Nateâs ears twitched hard, this time at the sounds of rending cloth and the clatter of falling buttons. Nothing he saw or heard sounded like Alexander Hyun was enjoying the company he currently kept.
Unseen there alone in the dark across from the unfortunate display, for Nate everything receded. He sensed their hunger, the way their hands pawed. They wanted to hurt Alexander. There was no true normal desire there, not for them and even less for Alexander himself. Something icy cold scraped over Nateâs chest and across rib cage at the realization. It was a sensation heâd felt before, he knew, long ago. The memory was gone as quick as it had come, and he was left devoid of all emotion. There was no fear, no dismay. There was only fire in his veins, a vicious fury blurring away all edges of his senses. Like reins of fire he saw those edges in the flames, reins that now he seized and drew back towards himâŚ
OUTSIDE UNDERGROUND VIP LOUNGE 1:40AM
Aynaet licked his lips again. Judah had said leave this one alive once they fed, but he and Bilal still planned to have much fun with their new toy boy. Alive, meant a beating heartâbeing able to walk or release his bowels in comfort again was certainly an exception to any of Judahâs silly rules. Warlocks (even tainted ones like this pathetic excuse for a witch) had managed like vermin to live through the burning times, so potentially having to use a ostomy bag someday soon, shouldnât bother this wretched excuse for a sorcerer too much.
Moan or scream it was all the same to them anywayâŚ
Movement seen out the corner of Aynaetâs eye drew him back from the banquet begging weakly for more up against the filthy brick. Not even many meters away, stood another. Small, too like their toy, but Aynaet was not deceived by itâs pale human like appearance. Itâs stink was more than apparent. Like a curse, the disgusting blights glow crawled over Aynaetâs glamoured flesh and cause both he and Bilal who only belated realized the danger, to hiss in pain. The creatureâs glow grew and vibrated with other worldliness in the grimy corridor.
âSeraphâs blood!â The demon spat it out like acid, while baring itâs fangs, all manner of appearances falling away, as it shoved the witch toy in Bilalâs direction. Since when did the Seraphnim give a shit about horny stupid warlocks was anyoneâs guess, but one lone fool winged putrid beast would not cheat him of his fun tonight. Behind the violet eyed Aâwar demon, Bilal growled as well, bristled and flung the witch away closer to the dumpsters overflowing with trash. If there was to be an angels death tonight, then the larger demon wanted all parts of it. Besides, the witch was senseless from the human poisons heâd ingested so willingly from them earlier. Like meat in a fridge, he would keep for later.
As a matter of fact, they would even dip him in sweet angelic blood for seasoningâŚ
OUTSIDE UNDERGROUND VIP LOUNGE 1:44AM
âAlexander!â
Nate gently patted the cold cheek, and brushed floppy dark curls aside with a thumb. Dark eyes, rolled upward for a moment, but Nate didnât even need see the other manâs dilated pupils to know that the door was open but no one was home. He wasnât sure if he should be relieved by that fact or appalled that Hyun was so very high.
âWhy do you insist on being so much trouble for me?â Nate grumbled. âI have half a mind to leave you here in the gutter, since you like to roll around in it so damn much!â
He wouldnât though, leave Alexander Hyun to fate. Even now, with his mind whirling in fear, revulsion and only snatches of memory from the last four or so minutes of his own lifeâterrifying images of fire and blood crowded his overburdened mind, but focusing on them created voids of empty recall that gave him no clear picture of what had happened in the alley. Nate vaguely remembered seeing Alex with two others, however right then there was only he and his somewhat limp parolee laying on his side among the industrial plastic garbage bags. No one else exited the club, but Nate couldnât bare the idea of leaving Alexander in a pile of rubbish all alone.
Heâd have to take him home.
RIVER CITY APARTMENTS 2:00AM
Alexander Hyun was heavier than he lookedâŚ
âWhy are you such a heavy damn human! Geez!â Nate huffed softly finally flipping, hoisting and settling his charge in bed. High Alexander, was apparently dead weight Alexander. It was a novel change for Nate during the first half of his race across the rooftops, with a wiggling junkie over his shoulder. Most humanâs he could practically pick up one handed, and feel not the slightest bit of fatigue. Around the second half, the struggle became real and Nate seriously considered leaving Alexander Hyun atop the Civic Opera House roof, and let him figure out his own way home.
âWhat do you eat? Cement? Steel? I wouldnât put it past you to eat car parts, just so you can get wasted on the fumes.â He didnât really expect an answer, nor did he get one. Picking up Alexanderâs legs, pulled his boots off, and put them on the bed. Hyun rewarded him by promptly leaning over and vomiting in the trashcan Nate rushed to provide. After puking up all his boozy activities from earlier in the night, his charge was pretty much comatose. Nate considered taking him to a hospital cause he was so still, but realized heâd have a lot of explaining to do even in civilian clothes.
Especially ones splattered in what looked like bloodâŚ
âThis is strike two for you with me, Mr. Hyun!â Nate murmured dryly as he walked around the rumpled bed, found the edge of the bedspread, yanked it up and folded it carefully over Alexander. Then he stood there, til almost day break, listening as the man in the bed lightly snored. He watched every breath, until they eased and slowed in restful sleep. Once he was certain Alexander was on his stomach and not his back, where knowing the muscle head fool, heâs probably drown himself in his own bile, Nate showed himself down to the first floor of the apartment that was quite similar to his own (albeit quite a bit darker and messier overall).
âHeâs sleeping now. You donât have to worry anymore if heâll come home to you. If he tries to leave again before morning make sure you bite his ankles real bad, Pepper.â Kneeling down he fed a treat to the little dog who sniffed at him with curiosity and âspokeâ in his mind of walkies, her humans weird hours and the joy of eating the smoked sausages from which her name was derived. Chuckling to himself at her simple, familiar doggish desires, Nate finally let himself out.

So boring. . .
River sighed and stretched no longer much interested in what the so-called "adult" warlock had to say. It wasn't even about magic, as River, a green witch themselves was definitely interested in such things, but that warlock up there (despite his cool looking skin, fascinating accent and hair) was barely a warlock at all. Trying not to fall asleep, they wiggled their bare dirty toes in the sun warmed grass. At least Ms. Molly let them come outside for once without those cumbersome foot binders on.
Shoes were unbearable torture.
River plucked a dandelion leaf, and stuck the bitter herb between their teeth chewing thoughtfully in a quest to resist wandering off to more interesting pursuits. Ms. Molly had meant business, earlier when she'd said they had to make like human kids today. Even now River could feel her binds tightening in warning, as they prodded them tentatively with a small thread of arcane curiosity. They also started picking their nose rather thoroughly. There was of course a technique to avoid detection. They made out first like they were only pinching it, but what was really happening was they were working that nimble middle finger right on in there to the promised land.
Satisfying.
Not that River understood why the other beasties in the center got so bent out of shape over other peoples fingers in their noses. Everyone had one, unlike some other bits River wished did not exist. Frankly, River thought noses were just about the only good body part to be had. No one questioned if you had a nose, it was right there out in the open. Even better noses were practically all the same, you weren't defined by the size or shape. Noses all got boogers, sneezed, bledâsmelled when the food was gonna be good. Nose didn't need a special bathroom with a dumb stick person on it, to be "him", "her" or to wear shoes clothes that were heavy, uncomfortable and ugly just cause someone else made it "A RULE" based on some basically unseen useless anatomy.
Nope, like hunger, picking your nose was a great leveler. . .
"Ay yo! Assess what man? Come on. . .you not blind mister. That thing looks like a chopshop farted it out and then took like a million days worth of pisâ" River jerked at the foul words left unsaid and their delivery, before glaring back at the "wolf pup" shouting again behind them. Benjamin! Always so loud! Always acting like he was such a grown up! Ms. Molly should have allowed River to leave Ben a jackal. Little did he know he was also pretty boring and unmagical too, except when he and half blood vampire fought. River had already bet Minnie two candy bars and a sip of their blood that one or both boys would be kicked out the center soon. Ms. Molly was nice, but even she had her limits.
River's hoped for another battle with Darius versus Benjamin was not to be this day however, as Ben faltered, his sharp blue gaze meeting Molly's grey even stonier warning ones, so he added in a lower but no less aggressive tone. "Look dude, just cut the extra stuff. You not gonna stay, no one that Ms. Molls gets stays for long. We're the worst they got so don't be like bring this noise about going to no Dells. It's over three hours away, and that's with a real car that actually works. We ain't no mechanics and that. . .thing. . .don't look like it could do a doughnut around a parking lot much less drive across state lines!"
"Ben!" The young wolf winced at Molly's tone (he knew she was purposely using a bit of magic to hit shrill notes only a wolf like him could hear), but he didn't back down. He was an Alpha, Alphas don't back downânot even lone packless Alphas like he. It was a matter of principle. Another Were would have gotten where he was coming from. Ms. Molly was sweet and all that good stuff, like a grandma almost, but she wasn't out in these streets, and she wasn't no Alpha. She wasn't pack, and thus didn't get it.
They were going to get clowned by the whole centerâagain. Much as he liked Ms. Molly, he didn't wanna work with another two cent bargain basement unseen do-gooder like peacemaker Lim. Officier Lim didn't even know about them, not really and probably didn't know about himself. Now this half cast warlock was gonna make them slave over a futile Tinkertoy too?
What the crap?! They might as well be tip toeing through tulips around human beings, if this was gonna be the rest of the summer. He didn't need to know how to fix no cars, cause fixing 'em didn't pay near as much as stripping them for parts did. He'd rather learn about how to get on Judah's payroll or how to whop some fang ass. Fangs like that Darius kid and his big fat never-knew-when-to-shut-the-f-up half-bred fang mouth. Yea, Senseis show me how to rip Mutt Fang Jr.'s head off over there and then maybe we can shoot breeze about a bus engine, Ben though slumping lower in his spot, and glaring unconcealed hate at the man covered in tattoos before them.
Why was this weak under-powered warlock even giving a shit? He didn't look like no "volunteer" at all. He looked like he should be up on a stage somewhere in a dive bar, reliving his high school days when he might have been cool, getting blind drunk, and singing bad metal covers. Doing the most while making coked up middle age bitches throw him their granny panties. Ben eyed Alex harder, watching his movements.Â
Then again maybe the dude wasn't exactly into the the bitches at all. . .
Ben didn't miss the way Lim and new dude eyed each other when they thought the other wasn't looking back. Damn, just the way they were even standing next to each other right now, so close, too closeâlike they was pack life mates protecting each other or some shit. GAY! Did the goody-good cop really swing that way? Were they fuckinâ each other? Why hadn't he'd ever noticed before? Ben rolled his eyes at the pathetic sissified display, but by then everyone was staring at him like he was some kinda creep for being the only one with balls enough to say what they all were thinking âbout that stupid wreck.
"You. . .you. . .MEANIE! BE QUIET! I wanna go to the Dells!" Ben whipped around ready to sling abuse at the soft voiced speaker, who dared. Problem was, the "speaker" was just about the only one besides him none of the other kids dared mess around with.
Jahia.
The centers very own little Tribred, possibly the only of her kind. Behind her back, lone wolves like Ben called her the "furless fangless magical royal wonder". Everyone in the unseen community wanted a piece of the kid. It was disgusting to Ben honestly. The fangs thought she was some second coming of Hatshepsut, the mythic first vampire queen, destined to led all the fangs out of darkness and back into the light.
Good luck to humans if that ever happened. . .
The witches and warlocks, who thanks to their high handed queen mother, Eveâcurrently cloistered Jahia. Ben was pretty sure Ms. Molly herself had a shit ton to do with that. Far as Ben knew, the spellcasters hoped she was their so called "Nocticula" or "little night", the Redeemer and Earthly hand of Eve. Score one for to witches for laying claim first, not that it would matter. . .
Finally, to his own kind she was known as simply the "The Last Seer", the rarest of all wolf ranks. Seers had a mental connections to all other wolves and had the ability to mind-speak and mind-read, regardless of the distance separating the seer and a fellow wolf. They received visions to help make more accurate predictions and had the skill of talking more easily to other non-wolven creatures. Seers were pack to all and follower of none. So the minute little princess over there fluffed out like she was suppose to on a full moon, the packs would demand she be turned over to the council. Witch princess or not.
Still mythic lycan soothsyer, fae princess, vampire goddess, no matter what the fuck ever she was, Ben still thought of the kindergartner as pretty much a whiny spoiled pain in the tail. Jahia knew the whole goddamn unseen danced to her tune, and yet she still pranced around wanting to play âtea partyâ and âpirates of the seven seasâ, totally ridiculous. However, he left her be. Jahia might be the "furless fangless magical royal wonder", but she had the least ability control of any of them. If there was any of them to out their little shared secret, it would be her and her perchance for calling up hives full of stinging bees and wasps every time she flew off the deep side of anger.
âWhatever, man. Joint's still a hot mess, ain't gonna even go two feet off this lawn.â Not a retreat exactly, but Ben fell silent. He'd been stung by Jahia's bees before, so it wasn't an experienced he cared to repeat, especially since it had resulted in River turning him into a jackal for a week straight in punishment for every bee that had died for the cause.
Witches totally sucked.
And they always stuck together. . .
"Go on." Jahia, retook a dainty cross-legged seat in the lap of another little girl not much older than she herself, with all the imperious placated bearing of a teeny queen resetting her throne. "Please continue. Ben will be good now Mr. Alex, and we say we want to go to The Dells. Teach us to make the bus work."

Nate couldn't help smiling unseen over at Alex pointing to the bus and leading the kids around it at a safe distance. Nate was trying not to crowd the other man, but his hearing was still sharp enough several feet away to pick-up how the mechanic was diligently explaining safety to the kids, and surprisingly the WWII kids were raptly hanging on to his every word. Even Ben was silent, despite his glowering expression. For someone he'd had to bribe here with CS hours, pizza and a another mealâAlexander Hyun was certainly turning into the piped piper of rowdy little kids.
"You look surprised, at his progress." A lightly amused voice said, and Nate nodded sheepishly, as he stood and gratefully accepted the offer of a juice box from Molly herself. "Honestly I am also impressed. They are not usually so prone to respectful attentiveness."
They both known what an understatement that was.
"He wasn't exactly thrilled about coming back. Now though I canât really fathom way, he's doing a lot better than I did with them on my first day. . ."Nate admitted poking the little straw into the same brightly colored boxed that Jahia and Nieve were also passing out from a thermal cooling bag they were dragging between them. Nate watched intrigued as the kids didn't retreat to their respective distances from each other like dogs guarding their food as they usually did. Instead they crowded in, juice boxes in grubby hands, still asking Alex question after question. . .
How old are you?
When did you know you wanted to be a mechanic?
How many tattoos do you have?
Where's New Zealand?
Can we take the bus to New Zealand when it's done?
How long have you and Officer Lim been friends?
Nate was sure his face probably was turning several shades of red once the questions turn on him, and thankfully Molly seemed to understand the kids had reached their natural time limits for the day. With an earsplitting trill, she gathered the kids explaining they would be having cooking class with Rada next. The promise of tasting what they cooked, as Rada was known for teaching ways to make decadent dessert both tasty and healthy, was enough for the children to temporarily forget the new toy they had found in Alex, and scramble back up the garden hill behind Molly, making a chaotic jumbled dash for the centers double doors.
In seconds it was just he and Alex again. . .
Alone.
âAre you all right, Mr. Hyun? You look like you're still in one piece,â he tried for some lame humor to break the sudden silence that had descended now that the kids and Molly were gone. It shouldn't have unnerved him to be alone with Alexander Hyun again. After all the man, had been in his homeâate some of his pizza. Seen him tipsy. This should not be so unsettling. . .
Yet it was.
Shaking away his own silliness, Nate stepped closer and passed Hyun a juice from the abandoned thermal bag. "Here. Finest in unprocessed organic apple juice. You earned it. You can go home too, if you wantâI mean you went way above and beyond the call of duty today. The kids really like you!"
Folding the thermal bag gave Nate something semi-useful to do, and he hastily bunched the little bag into a neat square before pocketing it. "I'll get someone to move the bus for you to the other side of the building, closer to the workshop and inside before you're next here. Also, you can text me the hours that are most convenient to you. . . Iâuhm, didn't know you had regular job as a mechanic."
Nate didn't add it was because he'd been thinking the other man was a highly paid prostitute, escort or sugar baby living a life of leisure, alcohol, dope and indulgence. Nate really hoped that Alexâs job as a mechanic was the reason for all the ugly bruises he'd seen at the precinct and those scars on his back and side that even a tattooistâs clever creative hand had not quite hidden all the way.
But he doubted it. . .
"Anyway, yeah text me. You can send me a tool list tooâcan't promise I'll know what all of it is but I will definitely do my best to get what you need if you really can make thisâuhâvehicle actually run again. Don't kill yourself trying though, like I said I could always find something easier to work with. So I guess I'll um. . .see you later." Nate added, and tried to ignore where his shoulders were still warm from where they had been in contact with Alexander Hyun's casually slung arm earlier. Stop it! He silently scolded himself and began tidying up the reminder of the garden as best he could.

alex-hyunâ:
âI canât work with any power tools out here today, so Iâm gonna just focus on laying out a plan before we start pickinâ up any tools and all that. Explain to âem what weâre gonna do anâ all that, then start properly once we get this thing indoors. Like. We gotta recreate my work garage somewhere, so⌠maybe Molly can help us find a spot? But anyway, itâs gonna be alright.â He nodded decisively, then felt that sense of amusement filling him again, manifesting in a soft chuckle. The kids would begin trickling in soon, so they didnât have much time to get things set up.
âAnd like, relax, mate. I got this. Hell, you might even learn something from little old me,â he said, offering that big, broad smile of his that made his own dimples appear and somehow, for the first time in years, genuinely reached his eyes. He was up for the challenge. And hell, it might even be fun.
âNate didn't have a chance to reply (nor even a moment to delve deeply in why he felt so warm right where Alexander had laid his arm over his back and shoulders). There wasn't even a moment to thank him for his agreement to help fix the tragic heap of a school bus, nor ask more about his life as a kid, before they were rudely interrupted by a loud indignant voice, snapping in tones that were still half in and also half out of adulthood.Â
"Aw you have got to be fuckin' kidding man!" Benjamin shouted, his electric blue eyes looking almost like they were flashing, Nate thought for a moment. Unlike the others the bulky adolescent stalked right into the clearing where the bus currently sat. His tall frame looked even taller among the other kids, and not altogether boy but not really yet a man either biceps folded across his chest in a fit of defiance. "Ms. Molly, you an' Officer Lim can't be serious! It looks like a junkyard threw up in the grass. This is like the same shit they give kids in juvie to do for like a quarter a day! I'm not doin' it!"
"Yea you'd know know lots 'bout juvie wouldn't youâyou stupid homeless mongrel." snapped Darius, another teen with a single mother Nate often thought was too young, too conceited and too above everything else about parenting to be bothered with raising the highly intelligent and athletic youth properly. Ben stepped in Darius direction, fists clenching and eyes unflinching, but thankfully Molly stepped smoothly between the bristling teens like a lightening rod, diffusing the situation before the boys could clash with feet and fists, as they were usually want to do.
"Benjamin Iâll thank you in advance to watch your language please. Darius, we've spoken before about the necessity of not calling others outside their names. You will both control yourselves and be an example to your fellowsâor you can spend the rest of the afternoon with our Bingo club, being number callers and turning the Bingo cage." Molly rubbed her temples, sighing and the others, now that Ben had announced their presence streamed around the tiny director and headed right for the bus and the two men aside it.Â
âI wanna open the doors! No I wanna!â yelled Aalim, and Nieve, nine and eight years old respectively raced for the bus entrance, with Jahia the youngest WWII member at six trailing only slightly behind.
Nate only had enough time to shoot Alexander Hyun an quick apologetic look before he swiftly sprang after and caught the sprinting little bodies up in his arms before the three wiggling urchins could get anywhere near the "project" still covered in heavens knew what kind of grime or Tetanus. Alex might be able to fix the thing but Nate wasn't taking any chances the kids could make things worse than they already were by jumping around on it. . .
Besides Alex seemed to have his hands full at the moment.Â
While Nate hurried to return Woodshop Workshop number 2's littlest escape artists to Molly's care, he realized in horror that he'd forgotten to warn Alexander about a few of the kids. Certainly one kid in particular.Â
Namely Minnie. . .
Too late.
"Ya oppa! Ireumi mwoya?" With one long high ponytail swinging and wearing a pair of shorty shorts that looked as if they had been applied like a single coat of nail polish, Minji aka Minnie, saddled up to Alex cornering him like he was a mouse and she the cat that had missed lunch. Her soft voice teen was laced in seductive sweetness, and her too red lip glossed lips all sultry smiles. Minji had about all of the subtlety of an off-duty stripper as she reached to tug coquettishly on Alex's t-shirt sleeve with manicured finger tips as scarlet as her lips.Â
She didn't even try to hide the attempt at intimacy or tone down the open invitations in her doe like dark eyes. Which made sense given her past at the hands of a human trafficking outfit. Minnie had to be watched at all times, as per Molly's rules, especially around new males in the center. She was also the reason, the community center currently only had a handful of male volunteers, most of whom worked in the kitchen or directly under Molly herself. Already long familiar with Minnieâs track record, Nate made sure that the chit was in general never alone with other male students her age or older, or even himself, though he couldn't for the life of him, understand why anyone looked at Minnie and didn't see what he sawâjust a very sad and lonely little girl who had been grossly preyed upon and desperately needed to be protected.Â
"Minnie!" Nate ping ponged himself back over near the bus wreckage, quickly putting himself between Alexander Hyun and the miniaturize vixen with his arms out as if to further shield the other man from Minnie's view. Pouting the young girl was forced to let go of Alex's sleeve. How had she even known Hyun was Korean? The thought nagged a little at Nate but he didn't have the time to ask, since he was more concerned she might wanna trade insider tips with Alexander. Nate wasnât quite sure now that he was in front of Alex, just who needed more protection from whom but he wasn't about to let Minnie continue until he was forced to find out either.
Clearly a line needed to be drawn. . .
For both of them.Â
He didn't think the Hyun was into kids (at least he hoped not), but he was Hyun's arresting officer and that hadn't stopped the man one bit from offering to "service" him in the past (like the first time they had met). Luckily, Alexander seemed sober, and contrite for his behavior that night and had since then been relatively very well behaved.. Nate was just going to make sure things stayed that way.
"We're gonna get started soon so why don't you join the others Minnie, have a seat and we'll all introduce ourselves, 'kay?" Nate smiled as widely as he could, hoping Minnie didn't feel slighted, but remained firmly in place between she and her very much over twenty one ink covered male objective.Â
"Ashi! Fine Officer Lim, I go and sit. Jal jinae oppa!" Frowning, Minnie glared at Nate with a fury he'd never seen before, but she did take the hint and swung away on tiny kitten heel sandaled feet. Flipping her hair with sniff at both them as she went back to rejoin Molly, who by some miracle had managed to get the others to sit in the grass like the well-trained pups, that they most certainly weren't.
"Sorry about Minnieâs behavior if she made you uncomfortable. I'll explain it to you later, but try not to be alone with herâAlright Mr. Hyun?" Nate turned and whispered to Alexander once Minji was out of ear shot. "I'm not sure how she deduced youâre Korean just on sight, maybe you remind her of someone from her native home. Anyway, how about we jump right in you can introduce yourself. . .theyâre just kids. They don't biteâusually."
"Iâm glad youâre going to say! Now off you go Mr. Hyun, you've got this!" Without giving Alexander a chance to back out of things, Nate slipped behind him and gave Hyun an encouraging nudge (though it probably felt more like a huge shovel into the spotlight hip bump from Nateâs actual hip) to the center of the grass and then the off-duty officer stood back to let the man do his thing introducing himself and the project to his recalcitrant audience. Alexander Hyun seemed to be very free with his wit and magnetism around adults, so Nate really couldn't wait to see him try and get the kids of WWII to buy into his easy charm and smooth operators allure. Maybe, Hyun really could make something of this disaster. . .
Maybe.
