There is a sickness in this place. Beneath the bleached hallways, beneath the scent of hastily applied cleaning products and purified tools. Under all of that, under the pretenses of do no harm and public health, there is an illness in the walls. Breathing down her neck, stuck in the tiles so deep that you'd need to destroy it all to clean the place.
This is not a place of honour.
This medical facility, in some long-forgotten corner of Japan, is no place of great deeds done in the name of Hippocrates. No. The clientele here are the neglected and the desperate, the abandoned and the forgotten. Where good people who didn't get their shot at a good life, or squandered it, go to die.
In another life…this is where Sae would have ended up. Another turn on the wheel of Samsara, and she could replace any patient. But not this one. No, she's here on a query.
There are hundreds of people that could be of concern here. Almost everyone has something to hide from themselves, especially the desperate. Who is willing to kill to survive. Who is willing to view others as pawns to advance. There could be many monsters in any crowd of people.
And that's what makes this case so very…difficult. Compared to others.
The Metanav chimes with approval upon being spoken to. Fuck, but Sae wished it hadn't. Wished she'd hadn't seen the signs of delusion, of someone living with a desperate and forlorn hope that was doomed to collapse-
A rising shadow of the art world. A painter of the grotesque, the surreal. A doomed woman, taking her clock in the twilight hours and making it something beautiful. No public galleries showed her pieces. None wanted to. But every queer safe-haven with an upper-class tie had a Yeong hanging somewhere. A mark of solidarity, of safety, like the blood of the covenant. Sae recognised the one that Crossroad's had. The mark her paintings had on Yusuke, when he saw them. He practically glued his face to the first one he saw, so entranced by the beauty of the grotesque.
‘The Myriad Arms of The Nation’, it was labeled.
Someone who came from nothing. A working-class family. A second/third immigration immigrant. Body ravaged with disease, Ariane took all the will she had, and made something of herself. Sae has nothing but respect for someone who pulled themselves from the ground like that.
And now, Sae's going to skulk through the errant thoughts of a dying icon. Someone she respects, admires, even. And all for the sake of finding out what her mind has twisted her world into. The lawyer's heart swells with sympathy…and shame.
“Beginning navigation.” The world distorts as Sae is dragged away. One moment ago she had snuck off to the bathrooms. And now, to every eye imaginable, she is no longer there.
She is somewhere far, far away now.
Internally, she hopes that this is mercifully swift. Ariane Yeong is much more a victim to a monstrous state than a monster herself. That, anyone knows. She does not deserve the torment of a Palace, of becoming a shell of oneself.
But for women like them, things never go their way.
