Setting aside any fanon interpretation of what we think Steve’s home life is like, canonically, he is a rich, popular kid, and an only child on top of that (I speak as an only child myself). None of those things say to me he’d be cool with his best friend in the whole world having a romantic relationship with the first girl Steve was ever in love with. He might say he’s cool with it bc he recognizes that it is, well, not cool for him not to be cool with it, but deep down I think he’d be upset.

And the upset would have several layers. First, if Nancy and Robin got together, he’d have to be around them all the time by virtue of his friendship with Robin. Nancy and Jonathan were easy to avoid. Nancy and Robin would practically live at his house. So he’s gotta be subject to Nancy being in love with someone Not Him constantly.

Then, if they didn’t hang around him all the time, he’d be upset that the girl who dumped him and broke his heart is now stealing his best friend, the person who has always chosen him first since they became best friends, away from him.

And then, he’s got to worry about them talking about him. They both have very different dynamics with him. He’d worry about Robin, who knows every ugly part of him but hasn’t really had to confront those parts since they became friends, potentially getting a first hand account of the ugly things he did to Nancy, and even aside from that, just how he failed (in his eyes) as a boyfriend to her, and all the ways she found him lacking. And if Robin loved Nancy and hears all this, what if that makes her love Steve less? On the other side, Nancy, who he’s always wanted to be impressed by him, is going to get the warts-and-all version of him from Robin. (Personally, I think Robin would help show Nancy all the amazing parts of Steve that Nancy might have missed, but I’m imagining Steve’s fears.)

Next, I think he’d worry that Nancy, who has such high standards, wouldn’t see all the wonderful parts of Robin. He’d worry that she’d hurt Robin the way she hurt him. Not that he doesn’t think Robin is way more impressive than he is, but he saw how Nancy was annoyed by her at first. He doesn’t want her ever to feel the way he felt with Nancy.

Finally, it just kinda sucks to have your friend go after your (ex) girl, period.

Robin: Kill Tammy, kill Vickie...

Robin:

Robin: Marry Nancy.

Robin: *looks at Nancy with intention*

Nancy: Yes.

Steve: *whispers* What the hell just happened?

the second or third time robin comes to nancy’s house in high school, nancy warns her as they’re trudging up the stairs that her room is “a mess”. it’s really not, and robin realizes that as soon as she steps in, but nancy can’t help continuing to protest that it usually doesn’t look like this, her floor’s never cluttered, somehow she ran out of time to make her bed this morning, and none of these are things robin would even think to care about, but nancy’s already had a bad day and she looks about ready to cry. i’m going to use the bathroom, she says tightly. be right back. 

a few minutes later she opens the door to find her bed made oh-so-carefully, backpack hung on the back of her chair, robin gingerly attempting to sort the pile of papers on her desk. she turns around at the sound of the door opening and sees nancy staring and starts, “sorry, i wasn’t trying to be nosy, i just—”
