Falling Up

There were a couple of places where the story references things that someone living in the mid 1800s would not have known. Those things took me out of the story. Humans didn't discover dinosaurs until the early 1800 and certainly did not know they were birds. And that damn chicken, Mrs B. I could have done without any of that story. I know it was a setup to the fight between Joey and Abby. The first time that chicken attacked anyone, it would have been dinner. I felt that the story between Abby and her father was underplayed. A man who would have his child kidnapped, leave her to die, and then spend a large chunk of money to see her lover murdered, would not walk away from land he believed belonged to him. Not having that deed would lose him everything. He absolutely would have been a bigger problem than one knock on the door late in the story.

I am not upset about the fan fiction element. I throughly enjoyed this book. But was pissed it ended on a cliffhanger. I wanted to savor these characters a bit before finishing the series. Now I need to read the second book immediately.

This months book club pick. I was wary of another historical fiction about WWII, but once I got started fell in love with the women of the story. The novel feels like a direct parallel to our own current events and how easily history repeats itself. Humans it’s seems don’t change. It’s also a little bit gay which delighted me.
