The female signifiant is used to argue the femininity, athleticism, and theatrical edge of all-womenâs, amateur roller derby. The female signifiant is rooted in âthe notion  that bodily engagement in sport[s] engenders a particular kind of feminist awareness insofar as female athleticism undermines norms regarding feminine frailtyâ (Carlson 430). Brutalicious of the Big Easy Roller Girls (pictured above) embodies the new visuals of modern roller derby. She is geared up in the uniform of a typical athlete, wearing full pads, but also has tattoos, thus holding onto some of the theatrical elements of roller derby culture.Â
