92-Year-Old Grandmother Makes Stunningly Intricate Temari Balls
AÂ ninety-two-year-old-grandmother from Japan creates stunning embroidered balls known as âtemari,â (meaning âhand ballâ in Japanese) which showcase a skill she learned in her sixties. A traditional folk art, which was conceived in Japan in the 7th century, the craft is tedious and highly demanding craft. The unknown woman has constructed 500 unique designs, which are photographed by her granddaughter NanaAkua. Overall these beautiful trinkets are a symbol of happy life and good fortune, which originate from friendship and loyalty.Â

A cat makes its way through the corridor of the Girdle Wall of the Temple of Horus at Behdet.
or - Bastet pays Horus a visit.
For some reason the sum total of the amount of time that has passed since these walls were built really hits me in this picture.
My parents ⌠think of a wife as a manâs luxury, which he can afford only when he is making a comfortable living. I have a low opinion of this view of the relationship between man and wife, because it makes the wife and the prostitute distinguishable only insofar as the former is able to secure a lifelong contract from the man because of her more favorable social rank.
In his love letters to Mileva MariÄ, young Albert Einstein both reveals his tenderest romantic side and articulates his views on gender equality more directly than he ever did elsewhere. (Except perhaps in that wonderful letter to a little girl who wanted to be a scientist but feared her gender would hold her back.)
Read his love letters here.

We love to see the books our patrons have pulled from the shelves. We found this volume on Federico Garcia Lorca in a pile of art books on level 4 West, far from their âhomeâ. Those of a certain age or temperament might know Lorcaâs name from the song âSpanish Bombsâ by The Clash. Others of a more sophisticated bent might know him as a playwright and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. Few people, however, are aware that Lorca was also a visual artist, as can be seen in the paintings above. These images, including the photograph of Lorca, are from a catalog from an exhibition of Lorcaâs work in Antwerp in the late 1990s.
Life in Japan, ca. 1910
The above images are from a collection of photographic glass-plate transparencies depicting life in Japan, including scenery, street scenes, workers, farming, fishing, silk production, stone carvers, wood carvers, metal workers, potters, and artists. These âYokohama photographsâ were sold to foreign tourists between about 1868 and 1912, before cameras and postcards were generally available
The slides were purchased by Herbert Geddes, a manager for G.R. Gregg and Company, importers and exporters, in Vancouver and Winnipeg. He was sent to Japan and was based in Yokohama between 1908 and 1918. Geddes was manager for Gregg and Company in Vancouver until the mid 1950s.
Part of the Herbert Geddes collection.
