âI donât really mind,â she grunted as she held up the other half of the beast, âIf theres something good to come out of it, I donât care what I do. Even if it doesnât really benefit me, y'know? For the sake of the Empireâs future.â
âIndeed.â He readjusted himself so the beast was easier to carry, moving slightly forward to have Shengnan get used to the momentum. âMost of the people under the Shadowscythe banner are used to only being interested in what benefits ourselves. At least now we have a purpose to work together. If either one of us had to do this type of quest by ourselves things would be more difficult.â
âHeh, no kidding.â She laughed, keeping up with Hiroâs pace. There was a bit of silence between the two as they walked through the forest, headed towards the Sisterhood. Trying to prevent the silence from continuing, Shengnan asked a question. âSo, kid,â she started, âWhatâs your story? Howâd you end up in the Shadowscythe?â
He froze suddenly at the topic, which caused the sorceress to almost crash into him, accidentally contorting the beastâs body.Â
âWh-why would you ask?â
She couldnât see his face, but he bit his lip as he stared blankly ahead, unnerved. Of all the topics, that was the one she choose? He supposed he should have expected it.Â
Shengnan steadied herself after bumping into the man. âJust curious s'all, damn.â She stepped back to straighten out the beastâs body.
âHm.â He frowned and moved forward when Shengnan was done. He wasnât really appreciating her curiosity. Especially the fact on how she kept calling him âkidâ like he was a small child. He was much taller than her, and possibly older as well. He didnât appreciate it all.Â
âAlright alright, you donât gotta tell me,â she said, âtheres no need to be so sore about it.â She kept moving forward with him.
âGood.â He didnât want to discuss anything with the woman after that, preferring to walk in quiet. The silence was lengthy, the tensions palpable as they walked.Â
Well, that certainly couldâve gone better, she thought to herself. She figured that Hiroto probably had something fucked up happen to him, or something. Hell, if something did, thatâd be a hell of a story. She started thinking of the possible things that couldâve happened to him, just for the hell of it. Maybe also to ignore all the tension between them.
He didnât know what she was thinking of, and to be honest he didnât really care. He just wanted to redirect the conversation from himself. Delving into his personal life after a first meeting wasnât in his interests, so he had no need to continue the conversation if she was being pushy. They both just continued forward in silence as they brought the corpse of the monster along.Â

When the beast was in just the right spot, she muttered something under her breath. The beastâs roar was cut off by a concentrated beam of red mana hitting it, causing it to fly back and hit a tree. The tree cracked and broke under the beastâs weight. âThe rest is yours,â she said while setting down her staff. She figured sheâd let him have a bit of fun, too.
âWell, well. And I thought this was a team effort!â He laughed, but it was clear he was joking. The beast moved its limbs hastily, trying to get up. One of the skeletal minions shot an arrow into the beastâs hide, causing the monster to bellow in anger. Righting itself, it charged once again at the necromancer, who blasted it with dark magic. Backing up and sidestepping, Hiro ran to the other side of the clearing, the monster being too stunned to focus on an enemy. âI have an idea.â He shouted across the area, gesturing for her to move away. âBut you might want to get out of there.â
She nodded, and in a blink of an eye, disappeared in a purple mist. Her body reappeared up in a tall tree several feet away from the clearing. She could hear the beastâs howls of anger and pain.
This would need all his concentration.
Willing his minions to do the fighting for him for a bit, his soldiers kept the creature busy as he glanced down at his hands, glowing with darkness magic. Creating an orb, he watched as he saw the orb grow larger, until it was big enough, almost the size of the beast itself. Instead of the area growing hot, as most magic did, the clearing grew colder, as if the warmth of light had been sucked out. The skeletal soldiers disappeared from being near the beast and reformed behind their master as Hiro flung the orb towards the beast, who stumbled with a startled cry, falling over its side and collapsing on the ground in a heap. The creature was not dead, but it wouldnât be fighting anytime soon. The area was still freezing, but the necromancer didnât seem bothered. He strode towards the beast, which made the sorceress assume it was safe to come back down.Â
Shengnan jumped from tree to tree and landed down in the clearing with a loud thud. âYouâve done one hell of a nice job, Iâll tell ya that. Those soldiers you summoned arenât bad either, better than the ones in the army at least,â She chuckled, âHey, since that thingâs still alive, I can take it back to the Sisterhood to run some tests. Iâll have to tell the Empress about it, though.â
He smiled gently, dismissing the soldiers with a wave of his hand. They evaporated into thin air, and would be staying in the underworld until they were called upon once again.âThank you. I trained them myself. By all means, feel free to take it back to the Sisterhood. If itâs easier, I can inform the Empress of the results of this quest while you do so. OrâŚâ He glanced at the hulking corpse. âI can help bring it there. Of course being a sorceress and all, you probably have figured out a way to get it there.â
ââŚYeah I have no idea how Iâm gonna get it there. I may be a sorceress, but Iâm not that smart. Iâm not dumb either, though,â she said, âI could use magic to help me, but the Sisterhood is on the other side of Lore. Which is..pretty far.â
He rubbed the back of his neck, walking around the beast as if such movements would find a solution. âI could make it undead, which would enable me to summon it or dismiss it at will, however Iâm assuming you want to leave the body intact to get the most out of it.â
âYeah, otherwise there might not be any chaos left to study.. How âbout we just carry it? I think the two of us are enough to lift this thing,â she motioned her hand towards the fallen beast. If it woke up on the trip, she could probably just beat the damn thing with a stick until it was knocked out again.
âSure. I would teleport it, but my mana has almost been entirely depleted.â He gripped the larger part of the beast, and even with his strength, holding the creature by itself was a struggle. âYou can carry its other half. Although it will be a long journey to get back.â

âI hope so. It gets tiring, people belittling you because youâre a lower rank than they are, but they still know damn well that you can kick their ass with nothing but a toenail clipping.â She gripped her staff tighter.
âMmm. Which one belittled you?â Out of boredom, he flung his dagger into a tree, severing one of the thicker branches. Instead of falling to the ground, it reappeared in his hand. âMost of the higher ranked officials are surprisingly well behaved. General Tibias is actually quite the conversationalist if you are willing to listen.â
âIt wasnât anyone that high, just ones barely above my rank. Theyâre gone by now, though,â She smiled. She may had something to do with the âbullyâsâ death, but it had been just brushed off as an accident.
âAh. You dispatched them?â He was surprisingly frank, his attitude unchanged. âWell when I first joined, some people belittled me too. However in my case I challenged them to a fight. I wanted to see if they were truly more capable to the Shadowscythe than I was. Three guesses as to who won.â
âYesâŚdispatched,â She cleared her throat before continuing, âLemme guess, you won? I wouldnât be surprised; you seem pretty strong. If I were just starting out, Iâd know I wouldnât wanna fight you.â
He laughed. âThey left with multiple broken bones and a broken ego. But yes, I won. Thatâs what years of practice gives you.â He eyed Shengnan carefully. âAnyway you might want to be careful from now on. Setting up an accident for a âbullyâ of yours may have got you out of that issue, but I wonât recommend doing it again. People might get suspicious.â Looking at the sorceressâ shocked face, he smiled mischievously. âI have my sources.â He spoke cryptically, before going back to throwing daggers in trees.
Shengâs shocked expression eased into a smirk, âHeh, I can see that. Thanks for the advice. Iâll try to not do it again,â she chuckled. Just then, a low growl was heard coming from behind a few trees. Readying her staff, the sorceress spoke. âItâs here.â
âFinally.â His daggers re-appeared in his hand, and the man smiled. âYou donât mind if I get some backup do you?â He flung the first dagger, which landed on the hulking shadow, which roared in anger. Hiro didnât looked worried, instead looking with mild fascination as the monster drew closer.
âNot at all,â she stared at the beast until it came out from its spot. The rays of sun hit its royal purple pelt as it swayed back and forth from the beastâs movements. Shengnan aimed her staff at it. She just needed it to be a bit closerâŚ
The monster roared and charged towards them. Trusting Shengnanâs expertise Hiro rolled out of the way, before slamming his outstretched palm on the ground. Immediately several undead soldiers rose from the dirt, bones creaking as they clawed out of the ground. They pulled the weapons off their backs, a couple charging the beast while a few stayed near their master, preferring to work long range. In any case, they were better coordinated than most of the Shadowscythe undead minions that the sorceress saw before.
âI hope so. It gets tiring, people belittling you because youâre a lower rank than they are, but they still know damn well that you can kick their ass with nothing but a toenail clipping.â She gripped her staff tighter.

âDesoloth isnât a bad story, either.â âAnd yeah, this virus is like nothing else iâve encountered before..â she sighed. âSome of the Sisters are losing hope.â
âWell they shouldnât.â He wasnât big on hope speeches, so he avoided going off on a tangent. âIn a way, they are very important for Loreâs survival. If they persevere, they could help a lot of people who will most likely get the disease.â
âOnly few are giving up. Most of us are still going at it, like Sister Dawn and myself,â she looked around, âOnto more pressing mattersâŚâ Several bones and scraps of armor were scattered around the area. There where footprints bigger than a bearâs leading off into secluded forest on the side of the city.
âIt appears we have a lead.â He knelt down to look at the footprints closer. Smirking, he looked at the sorceress. âWell then, would you like to lead the way? Shengnan, wasnât it?âÂ
âGladly,â she took out her wand and morphed it back into her staff. Looking around while following the tracks, Shengnan had her weapon at the ready. âSo, how long have you been with us at the Shadowscythe Empire?â She wanted to know more about Hiro if she was gonna battle by him.
âHmm. Six to seven years?â He followed suit, twirling one of his daggers in anticipation of the monster. âItâs been a while, thatâs for sure. What about you? How long have you been in the Empire?â
âIâve only been around for aboutâŚtwo or three years? So just half as long as you, it seems. Some might say im still a rookie, but I have as much experience as a veteran around there.â
âI donât doubt it, you carry yourself well.â He eyed the forest carefully, feeling watched. âIâve heard of a few people who merely joined the Shadowscythe because of the Empressâ appearance. Those who join a cause based on mere looks are the ones who are truly beginners. In any case, in a while you wonât be considered a ârookieâ anymore.â
