Season 2 of X97 was pretty bad

warning: mild spoilers for x-men ‘97 s2 finale ahead!

I think the x-force and the weapon x episodes were probably the best two, mostly because of their self contained nature. but overall it was a mess. it had a lot of plot holes and added elements for no particular reason but what felt like “we’re referencing this comic book moment everyone loved” and then butchering said storyline moment completely by removing it from all surrounding context and mixing it with other comics and also, new elements. I feel if you are going to deviate from any adapted material, and in this case the x-men comic books, at least if you have a good original story to tell it works. but making a frankenstein’s monster script of all these different plotlines just doesn’t work for ‘97 here.

(It also frankly just screws them over for future decisions too!)

none of the ‘90s apocalypse stuff really makes that much sense and it shows here. I love silly comic book shit but I frankly wish they had just adapted the krakoa apocalypse lore, that would have been so, so much fucking cooler to see. but because they mixed krakoa and genosha in season one, I do understand it limited the options for telling that kind of story in the future, which is part of the problem of scrambling plots together.

I do also think it felt like s2 was relying on the success of “remember it” as an episode, but sadly nothing with rogue + gambit or any other character tugged on heartstrings like that ep managed to for so many. idk. it just lacked …sauce? and felt like a majority of the time, it was just everyone’s favourite cool 90s characters having cool power feat moments (which is fun to see - when earned!) but I suppose that is an issue in general with the 90s xmen comics too. so I suppose it’s a pretty spot adaption in that sense, for better or worse.

I don’t mean to be overly negative or contribute to any discourse. overall I still had fun watching. i just have some thoughts!
