Let’s Stop All this Drama
For the past couple weeks, I have sat by and watched as this fan based has ripped itself apart over bullshit. I’m a newb to the Gorillaz fandom but it means so much to me. Not only does it mean so much to me musically but artistically. Jamie Hewlett has helped change and develop my art style for the better. It’s not where I want it to be but it’s getting there. And that’s why I’m making my blog today cause I’m utterly disappointed at the people either calling him racist, sexist, and/or calling out people for supporting him. What troubles me about this, even more, is that these are people of color. As someone who’s African-American female, I find this to be disappointing and let me explain myself. ( or not)
I know that some people are probably going to call me out or hate on me but I don’t give a care. These arguments are plain out ignorant. Simple as that. The people who sit here and believe the people who say these things are simple minded and need to do research for themselves. Most of the things that he’s been called out for can all be explained. Example: Monkey Tennis. Most people have been using Monkey Tennis as the main backing of the argument that he’s racist and sexist. I will have to say the contrary. I’ve done my research on Monkey Tennis and it turns out that the project idea wasn’t his idea. I know this fact probably won’t change anybody’s idea of him but hear me out. If you are an artist or animator you should understand this. Sometimes you take on projects solely for the money. You can’t blame him if he was just in it for the money because we all need it to survive and if I were in his shoes I would have done the same thing. Besides, what I know about this project, is that they were made this way to be an intentional mockery of these troupes. Which I see no harm in making mockeries of something if it’s all in good fun. People may be like oh well you think that old school cartoons are ok and that we should let them slide. People might say well you think it’s ok to have people or color or females be subject to ridicule for entertainment purpose?!?! Yes and no. In my opinion, I feel it’s ok if it’s used to educate or/ and intentionally hurt people.I went on to read the descriptions of the other two characters who are white. What I’ve gathered is that they are supposed to be characters of the types of people in this world. In which I feel are fairly accurate. We have the troublemaker, the egotistical person, the gender confused person of color, and the horny teenage girl. All of these types of people I’ve seen in real life and online. There are people that look like that or act that way and they shouldn’t be shamed for it. My question to you all is that should we belittle people who are gender confused? Should we belittle someone who looks like or acts like a stereotypical asian person, a black person, Indian person, native American, etc? Should we belittle a person who wants to express their sexuality? And for these, reasons I feel that Jamie wasn’t and isn’t sexist or racist.
Jamie Hewlett hasn’t shown any signs, in my eyes, of racist tendencies. I know some people are going to be like oh look at Del’s design, oh look at noodles phase one design, look how he fetishes noodle, look at whatever other design. I just have one thing to say, none of the people involved have said anything about it. Del the funky homo sapiens has not complained about his design in the Gorillaz universe. None of the voice actresses for Noodle have complained about. None of the animators or artist at studio passion pictures or studio 13 have complained. None the black or Asian collaborators have complained about it. If this was such a big racist and sexist issue, why hasn’t anybody in the crew complained? And you know why because they’re just fucking cartoon characters that don’t promote racist or sexist behaviors. Oh, del has big lips, Multi-fly-by has big lips, so what. There are black people with big lips. Should big lipped people not be represented in the media? Should black people that look black not be shown in media. Should Asian people that look Asian not be shown in media. So what I’m gathering is that cartoon characters or people, in general, can’t have big lips, can’t have small or slanted eyes, or any features that some people have that is considered “racist”.That’s backward as fuck. Just imagine, that in the media take these things away. To me, it would make me feel like I’m not represented properly or other minorities groups. I have big lips and I love seeing characters with these lips cause then I ashamed of these features especially since they are coming from such inspiring characters. These characters have a personality behind there so-called “racist” looks. You people who do this are undoing the slow progression that has been made to stop racism by saying that an artist shouldn’t draw a race in a “stereotypical” way because they are white.
Oh, Noodle showed some panty, the big shock. Wow. Shes 27 years old. In canon time, and if were were to consider real time she’s a 20-year-old character. If a cartoon character is shown sexualized, as long as they are at least 17+, then it shouldn’t matter. Belittling a woman because they were skimpy clothes or enjoy sex is wrong. If you’re a woman, man, or whatever another gender that stands for women’s rights or/ and equality than why the hell is judging a woman for wanting to express herself through these means. Aren’t you promoting the opposite of your cause? Stopping a woman for expressing herself through her sexuality. I remember a few years back there was this free the Nipple campaign. What happens to those beliefs. Oh, is it wrong because a cis white male drew it? Oh, it’s so wrong because cis white males have been doing women wrong for years, but not all of them. People like you saying this is generalizing people like this are doing the same thing that pisses you off. Instead of getting angry at all cis white men, get angry at the ones who actually trying to hurt people and not the ones that are trying to help people.
I’m disgusted at the behavior of the some of the people in the fandom. How do they have the right to sit up here call Jamie and another artist racist and sexist, yet some of them sit up here and have something related to Gorillaz in their names or still do things related to Gorillaz on their accounts. To me it seems like you’re making trouble, just to make trouble which is fucking embarrassing. Especially since I know some of yall are black. It makes Black folks look bad and upholds most of the negative stereotypes put upon us (which is even ironic). I know I went on this long rant, but I don’t give a care. I’m just sick of people bullying and harassing others for unreasonable shit. You guys are literally fighting over fictional characters. If you really want to make a difference in the world, then go out and actually advocate in your fucking neighborhood. That difference might not always affect you but it’ll help the generations after you. If you are then, fine put all your energy towards that instead of using to hurt good people. Don’t put all your anger in the world on good people, ok. Gorillaz is about family and loving people for who they are or at least that’s what I get from it. And if you can’t see that then you’re a really ignorant human being.
