(A/N: Here is my @kabby-holiday-fun Valentines fic for @a-kabby-k It’s already in the collection on AO3 obviously, but I thought I’d post it here too! Very happy you liked it, Ju! Happy Valentines Day!)
He’s practically vibrating with pent up anticipation and worry as he paces up and down the fence, slowly grooving a path into the ground with muddy footprints. Marcus keeps his eyes fixed on the tree line, ignoring Harper rolling her eyes in his direction. Abby and Raven had said they were fine, that everyone was fine, voices filled with static once their radio had finally come back into range. They’re fine, he tells himself, but knows he will be unable to relax until he can confirm it with his own eyes. Clarke and Bellamy went out to meet them a little under an hour ago, and though everything in Marcus desperately wanted to go too, he remained behind to keep an eye on the fragile state of calm that had settled in Arkadia, knowing how easily it could be broken these days.
It’s one thing to hear her voice over the radio, sounding tired and miserable with missing him, mirroring the same pangs he feels in his own chest, but still giving him the precious confirmation that she is alive. It’s quite another to finally drink in the sight of her as she appears, along with the rest of her group, looking a little worse for wear but happy to be with Clarke, walking alongside her, once more.
Marcus stands at Arkadia’s front gates, waiting, until Abby’s eyes find his, and then it’s like he has tunnel vision. The rest of the world ceases to exist, and there is only the profound relief and blazing need on her face as she starts running towards him. Marcus takes a few long strides to meet her and then she’s there. He scoops her up as she jumps into his arms, lifting her off the ground completely, and is delighted by the little breathless laugh she lets out.
She’s real and solid and warm, and Marcus can’t get close enough, even though he swears he can feel her heartbeat echoing his own where their chests are crushed together. He buries his face in the honey waves of her hair, breathes her in, feels her lips brush his pulse point, and thanks the universe for bringing her back to him safe and whole.
