—✕ █ ▌Gills —- a quaint and ( dare he say it ) ADORABLE little name, though Loghain wonders if such a being would be pleased to be deemed as adorable. The bow only adds to the whimsy. ❝Loghain and Gills – an INTERESTING name of a duo. Better than me just saying ‘ hey you ’ anyway.❞
Perhaps ‘ good ’ is an exaggeration, but their situation is BETTER than ‘ bad ’, that’s for sure — He’s long since learned about the importance of friendship, strength in numbers, and so many other nauseating, yet good on the heart lessons. To be an ALLY with a somewhat aquatic being is more or less the tip of the iceberg as far as he’s concerned. Vigilance is kept nonetheless despite his assurances, eyes moving from Gills and the corpse to keep an eye out for more of the EVIL little fuckers.
Loghain is by no means a stupid man and he pieces together things bit by bit – this BEING – Gills is wary; understandable, Loghain tends to be wary around weapons himself. It is subtle that he adjusts his sword, and though he winces at having to lose some of his HYPERVIGILANCE, his hands move to cross in front of his chest.
The language barrier another thing —- speak softly, less loaded with words. That he can manage better, often joked as a TACITURN man in his youth. He’s admittedly eager to practice signing with another, all too aware of the empty void Meulin created by her absence in what feel likes YEARS AGO.
Alas, plans CHANGE the moment he is given the opportunity to talk about his beloved Gaster:
❝Oh? This? Ah, it is my engagement ring. The man I LOVE gave it to me as a promise that we are going to be married some day —- a promise of our love,❞ he says with a smile, WARMED UP by this thought, and yet somewhat downtrodden to be separated from his love. ❝I guess I just think about him without realising – .❞
he didn't understand what was so amusing about the name he'd been given ( nor why it was amusing when paired with ‘loghain’ ) - if anything, it was apt. the humans that lived near his river delta had given him a similar name, though he didn't care to comprehend their languages, either. it was yet another thing that he assumed was lost in the translation, or perhaps between differences far greater. he did not care what the man called him, either way. but it was - well, more encouraging to have someone even attempt to speak to him, where others had previously assumed him unintelligent or incapable of understanding entirely.
the fact that loghain and strickland had both worn such a thing was even more perplexing if it was meant to be a symbol of love and devotion to another person. he'd known that there was no kindness or capacity for mercy in that creature's heart, and he concluded that if such a monster had worn it, then it was out of a mockery of what it stood for. ( the way he would stand over him and mock him before beating him, taunting him with words he didn't understand except for the tone they were spoken in; hatred. )
'married'. he didn't know that word. 'what is that?' he repeated, unable to replicate a sign for 'married' or anything similar without knowing the meaning of it other than a vague sense that it meant being together with the one you loved. he and elisa had not spoken of it, and yet they were undeniably together in every sense of the word. she was water - an ever-flowing constant in his life now, regardless of whether or not she was there at his side. he recognized the peculiar expression that fell on loghain's face as he spoke of 'love' - elisa had worn one similar the first time they stated they were together, before expressing as much in a manner far more physical. that this human had someone in his life in the same manner was encouraging, and any tension left in his frame lessened considerably as he contemplated as much.
' together. ' it was a slow, almost nostalgic gesture. a quiet chirrup reverberated in his throat as something vaguely mimicking a smile of his own appeared on his lips - though it was brief, as he became even more acutely aware of the absence of elisa.' elisa; we are together. ' it wasn't simple conversation or a statement of similarities between them in the attempt to garner friendship; it was important, and his slow gestures grew more insistent and stronger. he glanced back to the unknown 'wrong' - his title for the deceased creature already. ' help find elisa, ' a pause. he did not feel her here, but refused to accept it. ' help fight. ' an equal ‘trade' of sorts, in his view, though it was likely that neither of them truly needed anyone to fight in their stead.

–「 It was him. Even from such a distance, there was no way Dimitri could be mistaken. He’d studied the creature too closely, too precisely. Since his arrival there wasn’t much time for the scientist to find things to hope for, and so this was the first thing. The Asset made it out of this alive. But had she? Had they all?」
「 Even with the lungs of a man who smokes, the scientist sprinted the distance, chest still lighter than it had been since he’d spoken to Elisa last. Pessimism was easy. But if Dimitri wanted easy, he would have obeyed his comrades. He would have kept his head down, and maybe have even went home.」
“Wait! Wait-!!” –「 Of course, he chided himself almost immediately. The creature didn’t understand his language, did he? But how to communicate? He had tried before. In the small pockets of time he had with him. It should have dawned on him to pick up a book on sign language in the days he was here. It should have dawned on him even before he met Elisa.」
–「 Clever, he’d remembered snippets of what he’d seen from the shadows. But it was limited. Catching his breath, he recalled a bucket hitting the chamber glass, then made the small motions to ask.」
‘ Are you okay? ’
–「 But how to say her name? He raised his hands, as if to press them to glass and look in. He hope it translated well.」
‘Elisa- okay?’
when he had been a prisoner in the loathsome tank, surrounded by humans who watched his every move like he was their prey, he had learned their faces quickly. he knew the structures of their faces, the the sound of their voices, their scents, and even the way they carried themselves - but he did not know them. he did not care to. they were all one in the same in his eyes, and he did not care if the majority of them lived or perished. he was not free of the same group of humans here, either - he was no fool. a bigger cage was still just that - a cage; only this time, there were other creatures in it with him.
but this one he recognized far too well. when the foul ‘strickland’ had beat him repeatedly in an effort to break him, this man had knelt down at his side - though at the time, the thought of anyone other than elisa laying a hand on him had been abhorrent, no matter if it was done with kind intention. though he did not understand the majority of what had been exchanged between the humans in that moment, it had resulted in him being allowed to breathe once again. it was the first act of mercy this human had shown; the last had been allowing elisa to free him. he had already earned his trust - no matter how late his seeming change of heart had occurred.
( the memories of being stared at and scrutinized under the eye of the humans who had torn him from his home and placed a chain around his throat were burned into him just as sharply as the odd spear that strickland had used to torture him. however, every act of kindness did as well. )
his eyes widened as he recalled the gestures the human clumsily repeated - ones that elisa had spoken out of concern when she ‘danced’. ( how peculiar to have a word for how she moved so gracefully on her feet the way that he had in the water.. it was a word that had brought him joy to sign to her - but now recalling it made him painfully aware of her absence. ) slowly, he lifted a hand to press to his chest with a slow nod; ‘ yes. okay. ’ but that didn’t mean he was content. without elisa here he was far from it - and he had yet to find her, despite briefly tasting freedom once again. the fact that she was the subject of the human’s next question only made that void in the shape of her grow even more.
‘ yes. ’ his nod this time was slower, more hesitant and distracted. she was alive, but not here. ‘ find, ’ he did not know if he knew the sign for that word, and mimicked the human’s previous makeshift sign for ‘ elisa ’ with a quicker urgency. ‘find elisa.’ he repeated the gestures again; it was not a desire or a statement of want - it was a necessity that he be with her, like the way she had ( once ) solely required air to breathe, and he the water.
hesitating for a moment, he decided to move closer; the irony in the fact that he was now the one studying him was not lost on him. standing up to his full height, he did not tower over him, but the difference between their heights - now that he was not bound by a chain or hiding in the murky, stagnant water - was noticeable. without warning, he took a firm hold of the human’s hand ( not enough to cause harm or pain, but a definitive, confident action ) and placed it against his head; a gesture he had given giles in apology as well as a show of respect and friendship while attempting to heal the older human. he did not have the same power here, but this man also did not seem to be injured - it was a sign of forgiveness, and a display of camaraderie that he bowed his head here.
‘ friend. ‘ he finally signed, pulling away and letting the human’s hand go.

All was fine for the Decadent Dandy so far. The monsters rarely troubled him… He’d gotten reasonably better about throwing arrows like javelins… And people were just about as miserable as he was! Not that using his arrows for evil intents was making him feel any better–but hey, why should he care either way?
Of course, launching arrows around and causing trouble was fun and all, it does get boring after a while. Doing the same repetitive task over and over and ov–HEY NOW. HOLD ON.
“ GOODNESS ME!!! WHERE ARE YOUR CLOTHES, DARLING-!! ”
Dangerous crying babies or not, a King can’t simply leave his people wandering about in the nude. He would have used his cape–but who knows if this fishy-civilian is slimy or not. So a napkin yanked out of his pocket will have to do with covering 1/90th of the poor dear. Tap it right on their chest.
Man… He should’ve grabbed more napkins…
he tensed at the loud exclamation, though it didn’t hold the cadence of a threat or being hostile - but with these things wreaking havoc in no discernible manner or for any apparent reason, he was on his guard. the man wore odd coverings compared to that of other humans, and a slight growl erupted from his throat when he reached towards him to touch him - albeit quickly.
he glances down at the paper now stuck to him due to the dampness of his skin - it did not seem to harm him, nor did it bear much of a resemblance to the coverings humans seemed to wear, or this person in particular. what the significance of the action had been utterly escaped him, and soon he decided to simply peel the object away from him. he considered letting it fall to the ground before hesitating and sticking it back onto the other in a confused manner.

—✕ █ ▌Patience and a glimmer of nostalgia rests WITHIN him, bones thrumming with this realisation of a past repeating itself. He remembers his own tenseness when he met Gaster, an unfortunate skepticism at meeting a being not his own race, and yet —- Fingers subconsciously play with the ENGAGEMENT RING he wears. The Hive is truly a place where multitudes of worlds converge.
A sigh of RELIEF as the being can offer a steadier means of communication, of which causes a fraction of Loghain’s muscles to slump. ❝Yes, I SUPPOSE even a glance can be considered ‘ speaking ’. Hard to learn your name from a roar, however,❞ he remarks in return. If Loghain is surprised to discover a shared language between them, he doesn’t express it.
❝Friend? Ah —- ❞ Loghain scratches the back of his skull; this being doesn’t APPEAR friendly, yet he thinks he understands. ❝I’m NOT AFFECTED by the darkness … by lovelessness.❞ The heaviness of his gaze lowers to the creature’s fallen opponent. ❝And you aren’t EITHER —- so, hm —-❞
Loghain’s hand falls away from his sword as he places a few tentative steps between them. A BRAVE AND CONFIDENT soul, yet not one hoping to claim the other’s territory; for some reason he is reminded of the wars he fought in one quick motion. ❝I should say that my ability to sign is rusty — but you want HELP surviving this. Yes? I feel like it is my duty to stop the creatures like the one you killed …❞ He could see himself becoming true friends with the being, though figures that he’d likely not APPRECIATE Loghain being so chummy.
his eyes were ever-wary of the movements of the human’s hands, though when he began to fidget with some peculiar trinket on his finger, a look of slight curiosity in his expression before hardening once more, faint rumbling of discontent in his chest. ( the fingers he’d severed from ‘strickland’ with his teeth had worn a similar object, and he didn’t know the significance of it. ) the tone in the voice of the other was faintly familiar, but he was able to relate it more to elisa’s friend ‘giles’ this time as opposed to ‘strickland’.
he lifted his hands, about to sign that he had no name, but he recalled the peculiar little ‘cartoon’ named ‘bill’ - and the name he’d given him. ‘ g-i-l-l-s’. he followed by motioning to himself, and then towards his gills along his neck. he’d had no need of a name and still did not see the use of one, but humans ( and whatever bill happened to be ) apparently found names to be a necessity, much like the coverings they wore. speaking of which, he had inexplicably been given a peculiar one
‘ good. ’ it still wasn’t the word he was searching to use ( not good, but certainly not bad ), but he knew of no other - elisa had taught him well enough to communicate the bare minimum with certain humans, but there was still quite a bit that escaped him ( and he didn’t often care to learn it from anyone besides her ). but it seemed that cooperation was a necessity here in this wrong land, and he would have to learn it sooner or later. he gave a quiet huff, gills rattling slightly as he attempted to translate what was being spoken to him, the newer words in particular were difficult. ‘ no. not like it. ‘ he gave a glance back to the defeated creature, but was quick to refocus his attention on the man as he stepped closer.
instinctively, every muscle tensed, but he did not move and remained quiet this time, though his eyes rarely left the sword at the human’s side. ‘ yes. ‘ he agreed in a slow, begrudging nod. ‘ you may help me fight. ’ after a long pause, he was the one to move closer to examine his new ‘friend’ - albeit still on the defensive stance. once more his gaze moved to the human’s hands - and the odd trinket. ‘ what is that ? ’
sorry… just wanted to see him do some kind asl

—✕ █ ▌He could SURMISE that the being before him is of similar blood, not that he is human, of course, but that his heart and aura possess a glimmer of LIGHT. The otherworldly creatures are not quite territorial, not to the extent that one may feel the need to CLEAVE each other, anyway. Loghain’s lips purse as he observes, hoping to find a gleam of reality from the scene he’s intruded upon.
The noise the being uttered is no more terrifying than that which can RATTLE an excited Gaster’s bones. More PRIMAL than the expressions Loghain’s boyfriend can bear, certainly, but that coupled with the being’s appearance is cause to wonder just where he came from. ❝Can’t speak?❞ Loghain queries with a tilt of his head. He’d Resort to sign language if he must, but until then, feet remain planted at a healthy distance.
Even so, despite distance kept, he refuses his bones to slump over weakly. One hand upon his weapon, spine a RIGID arch, he’s determined to be seen as strong, despite being far from a threat. Anything could change without a moment’s notice, and as it is, some creatures approve of an assertive nature.
the stance of the man was not unfamiliar, and that only served to make him more uneasy; the way he carried himself was not unlike that of enemies he’d slain in his own domain. the longer he studied the man though, there were differences. his was not an aggressive stance, but more of one determined. confident. in fact, his stance mirrored his own, and with that realization, he fell quiet.
‘can’t speak?’ just because men failed to understand him did not mean that he was not speaking. there had never been anyone worth speaking with, no necessity for doing so in his river delta. his encounter with the predator ‘ strickland ’ only reinforced the idea, especially when he had been struck whenever he voiced his pain. elisa had broken that belief, however. she’d shown him that there was a glimmer of redemption in humans - and even without her here ( she would show, he was certain of it - or he would find her ), he felt compelled to follow her example rather than old instincts. attempt to speak.
‘ not like you. ’ he answered, raising his hands in the necessary gestures, albeit somewhat curtly - though he failed to convey as much. as did his largely-expressionless face. another moment to gauge the human, before speaking once again. ‘are you a friend ? ’ ‘friend’ was not the word he wished for - but he held no gesture yet for ‘ally’, or one to fight with rather than against and had to substitute with the closest one he had.
had to take a stab at drawing my favorite part of the movie!

these creatures were not natural-born, they were created. they were spawned of something else. there was nothing to warrant that belief other than his gut instinct, and for him that was enough for him to be even more wary of the despairing wretches. the ones that did not harm or look to bear ill-intent, he left alone, while the others that held the look of a predator awaiting someone to attack - the same look in their eyes that he recognized in most humans rather than animals - were dispatched quickly. the one he was currently preoccupied with happened to be the later.
as he turned away from the fallen creature, he caught the scent of something else - rotten blood, as if it were tainted with something foul. but there was no strange beast nearby, only what appeared to be a human - though he remained reasonably cautious. rearing back, he gave an unearthly shriek and roar; a very obvious warning in any language. he had no wish to instigate a quarrel, but he would not back down or show weakness. everything about this place and this unusual outbreak of creatures set him on edge.

It’s not over until I can’t fight anymore.
@prunums // event sc.
how he hated the feeling of being caught out of his element; the man called 'giles' had once spoken of the irony of him being a 'fish out of water' in the world of men, but it had been something lost in translation. or perhaps it was difficult to find amusement when the air fought against his lungs at the time, he didn't know. but simply being here was enough to make his skin crawl. it smelled wrong, the way that human cities often did and...something else, ever-changing, growing, and sick - not entirely unlike the place where he'd been imprisoned before elisa had freed him. this was simply a bigger cage with the illusion of freedom, he'd concluded early on.
unfortunately, a cage didn't mean that it was devoid of outside dangers. this place was unlike any other which he knew, it was of no surprise that it spawned unusual creatures; such as as the odd one he was currently facing. it held the shape of a human and appeared to be distraught, but held nothing else in similarities. he recognized the look of a hunter - even one that did not mean to kill it's prey - and he felt adrenaline surging through his blood, gills flaring defensively as he growled at the unknown creature; a warning not to approach any further. even animals recognized such a warning, but this did not - and instead charged at him. for all the beast's bravado, it did not last long against his claws. instead of bleeding once hit, it seemed to fade entirely once he struck - and he thought for a moment that it was a trick of some kind.
when something else caught the corner of his eye, he snarled once again - baring his teeth and prepared to attack. however, he caught sight just in time that it was not the same creature, but what appeared to be human - though potentially just as dangerous as any monster. hissing, he refused to back away, but made no other move to attack. ' danger. ' he stated it with quick motions of his hands; whether said danger happened to be himself or the unknown creatures would depend on what move the human(?) made next.
