Come As You Are ā¶ River & Sage
"Hush, youāre not sleeping on the floor." Sage chided softly as she made quick work of cleaning the wound and extracting glass shards from his head. She did her best to get it all but the blood made it hard to see. She supported him through most of it, keeping him upright and off the ground. "Almost done, hon."
She spritzed the deep gash with an antiseptic. āIām gonna need to stitch you up someā¦ā She ācleanedā her hands with alcohol before doing the same to the needle sheād use on his head and got to work, efficiently closing the wound up so that bleeding stopped and it would heal properly. His hand wasnāt nearly as bad, she dug out the glass shards from the fleshy part of his hand and wrapped it up after applying antiseptic again.Ā By the time she was done her fingers were covered in dried blood, fingernails darkened with it.Ā
"All done, River." She breathed out a sigh. He looked ragged, like one day of sleep might not be enough to recover from last nightās events but Sage wouldnāt press him to stay in bed longer. One day was enough. She pulled the covers of her bed back and helped him up onto it, tucking him in with much the same ease as a parent would a child.
It wasn't the worst pain he'd felt. Far from. Compared to what it had felt like getting that bottle smashed against his head - hell, waking up to finding himself in a pool of smashed glass stained with his own blood - it was nothing. No sense of terror, no blinding pain. It felt like a hollow cry of physical sensation; like he was disembodied and simplyĀ watching himself get stitched up, rather than actuallyĀ feelingĀ it. Time passed quickly. Or slowly; he couldn't tell, and he sure as hell wasn't certain. It was with the exhaustion of a child who'd cried for hours that he did what Sage wanted him to, which was climb up into her bed and sleep.Ā
There was a strange sort of grace to his movements still, despite the ordeal he'd been through; a silent effortlessness to it, as though he was used to making himself seem small and not worthy of paying attention to. He didn't wince, despite the injuries, and he settled in quietly, letting Sage tuck him in without complaint.
"Y'can borrow mine," he murmured, icy blue eyes closed.
It wasn't long before his breath became quiet too, shoulders no longer tense as he slept.
"Doesnāt mean you have to deal with it, Riv." Sageās protests died when he insisted and she let him handle her arm, impressed with how gently he did it. There was a time before when sheād argued with someone like this- when all her pain and heartaches would be smoothed away by someone else with a stubborn will Sage could barely match. She cleared her throat and stepped a bit closer so River could inspect it easier. "Iāve got the medkit in my room. I could do it myself, you know. Werenāt you on your way somewhere before?" Sage would hate to derail River if he were in the middle of something, especially to do a first aid job she could manage herself.
"Don't tell me y'don't think your own logic is flawed," River shot back. "I'll do it," he said, ignoring her question of whether or not he was going anywhere - he had been, but it was nothing he couldn't do later, and he knew Sage well enough to know that she'd easily use it as a reason to weasel her way out of being taken care of by someone else.Ā
"Now, c'mon." His voice was stern, for once - a far cry from his usual eccentric drawl. "Medkit's got stuff for cleanin' in it, right?"

Ā Ā A sharp pain wiped the trace of a smile from the Dollās lips, making her wince quietly. More blood soiled the ripped fabric of the car seat as she shifted in position in order to get a better view of the Soldier. Oh how she hated looking weak in the eyes of others. In between heavy breaths she managed to articulate an answer to his question.Ā
Ā Ā āI got shot. Agents.āĀ It was all River needed to know. And probably all he wanted to know, which served her well. Another streak of light ripped the sky followed by a loud, deafening thunder. Storm was definitely worsening. No way sheād make it back safely to the Church that night. Not without help.Ā
Ā Ā Normally sheād tell the other to go fuck himself, sheās got it covered, but not tonight. Grief and pain donāt make good doctors. Nodding slightly her eyes fell back onto the blonde Soldier, brows joining in a questioning frown. āGot water? Or at least something that holds water. I lost my pack in the chase.āĀ
"Yeah." He dragged his soggy backpack down from where it hung over his shoulder; the entire thing soaked through. It was a good thing he wasn't carrying anything important - just his canteen and some knick-knacks that could handle the downpour. His knife was strapped to his belt, hidden beneath his jacket and shirt, and was surprisingly enough dry, at least for the most part. "Here," he said, handing the canteen to the Rag Doll, not letting go until he was sure she had it - fumbling the canteen away was a waste of time and effort.Ā
Shot by agents - the thought thundered through his head much like the sharp bellows that accompanied the lightning outside, the crackling noise so loud he could barely hear himself think.
"I can help you to the Church," he offered, well-aware that most people in BC were proud and too stubborn to live, and that Keagan was unfortunate enough to have both traits in spades. "Bullet gone through, or d'ya need a doctor? Can take ya to one if you've got one, too."
Sage kept from inspecting Riverās head as soon as he stepped back, not wanting to make the other soldier uncomfortable. āUh- sure? Itās kinda goryā¦ā She extended her arm out for him and looked at the mess herself. Most of the stitches were intact save for the ones near the top of her inner forearm. The initial wound was caused from her scaling down a building and getting caught on a piece of jagged metal she couldnāt see in the dark. Where the stitches failed, blood started seeping out. She winced as throbbing pain started to radiate up her arm. āItās really gross, River.ā
"Believe me," the blonde began, "when I say I've seen worse." River's fingers gently wrapped around her wrist so he could steer her arm, and he inspected the ripped, bleeding stitches with a trained sort of patience - it wasn't the first time he'd taken care of someone else's injury, though it happened less and less frequently with each year that passed. He'd been good at it, back home - had helped his sister more than once, just like she'd treated his injuries, too. He missed Rain; missed how their names matched - stupid and ridiculous and with a goddamn theme. He hadn't seen her since he was twelve.
Time flew by, it seemed.
"C'mon, we need to clean this up 'n make the bleedin' stop."

I know⦠I must have re-opened it while climbing or something. Honestly, River, itās fine.
Speaking of bleeding, howās that head of yours? [she moves closer to inspect it]
"My head's fine," River responded, darting away - one step backwards enough to avoid Sage derailing the topic of conversation entirely. "Let me have a look at it," he continued, gesturing to her arm; ignoring the blood as best as he could.
Iām fine. Iām-
fine
You're bleedin', though. How'd you, uh, how'd this-- happen?
I see earthquakes and lighting [ Kea / River ]
Ā Ā āAt least if youāre dead I can shove you out of my fancy red ride with a lot less effort.ā
Ā Ā Making a second attempt at scaring the pest that had invaded her space Keaganās thumb slid across the safety of her Kel-Tec and it fell with a silent click. In that moment she did not give a crap if she had to share the car with a corpse as long as it meant sheād get the peace she was so desperate for.
Ā Ā Every inch of her body ached as if she was being stabbed repeatedly and the brunette was not sure for how long sheād be physically able to aim, shoot and actually hit the target. It was then or never.Ā Wait. Keagan?
Ā Ā Taken aback by the sound of her name, the Doll lowered the gun but not enough for it to no longer be a threat. Just enough to give her time to figure out what the hell had just happened. How did this guy know her? As a flash of light split the sky in half once more the Doll finally saw her unwanted companionās face.
Ā Ā River Cobain. Toy Soldier. Out of all the people in Battery City she had to end up in the car with a fucking Toy Soldier. It wasnāt like she held anything against them, she used to be one, she just wanted no more reminders of the painful loss she had just suffered. Letting the arm in which she held the gun slide along the seat, a wave of dry laughter escaped from the Dollās lips.Ā
Ā Ā āGod. The universe really is a fucking asshole.ā Ā
"Nice to see you too," River huffed in return, blonde brows furrowed as he stared her down. "What're you doin' in this dump? You hurt or somethin'?" He himself was only taking cover from the rain, alongside other.. reasons.. for being there, but none of it was Keagan's business, just like how she'd gotten hurt wasn't his. Her being hurt in the first place was, however, at least if she wanted to get out of there without struggling on her own.
He'd seen the blood when light flared across the dark, hollow sky - and while River wasn't the best of medics unless you were dealing with cuts and bruises, he was sure he could get her to someone who was, at least if she knew a place.Ā
"You don't haf'ta tell me how it happened unless 's necessary, but I'm pretty sure you could with some assistance."
Come As You Are ā¶ River & Sage
"Mhm. Iāll even let you borrow my bed, yeah?" Sage took him up the stairs, keeping a steady pace despite his weight. They passed by doors - some opened and some closed - but encountered no other Soldiers. Sage assumed they were all avoiding the hallways, sleeping the previous night off or gone for the day. Any option suited Sage for the time being, she didnāt need them getting in the way of taking care of River. She took his gratitude in stride and smiled, though he couldnāt see it.Ā
"No need. Mājust glad I was the one who found you."
When at last they came to her floor and reached the last room on the left Sage wasted no time entering her room and setting him up on a chair. The door shut quietly behind them before she grabbed the medkit she kept in one of the various containers around her room.
"This is going to be a little uncomfortable," her voice remained smooth and calm when she approached him again, keeping him from slumping over into sleep. "Iām going to make sure the glass is out, clean it and keep it from bleeding anymore." Sheād take care of his hand after that and then he could sleep it off in her bed a few feet away. Sheād keep an eye on him until he was able to keep conscious long enough to move to his own room.
But first, Sage attended the worst of the damage.
"Aw, you don't haf'ta.. you don't haf'ta do that, I can sleep on the floor jus' fine," River replied, struggling with getting the words out - his entire mind was blurring, hazy at the edges and hard to comprehend. It did sound good though, sleeping in a bed, even if it wasn't his own. Maybe laying down would stop his head from feeling like a water spilling over the edges of a glass.
She made him sit down on the bed, and he leaned forward to support himself on his skinny, knobby knees as soon as Sage let him go, arms resting over the top of his thighs where they connected with the joints to become the rest of his legs. Legs were funny. And weird. And right then and there, he was having issues with how he could just do it - just walk - and before he knew it, his mind was swimming again, River losing his balance right along with his wits to alcohol, pain and exhaustion.
But she was there, fuzzy at the edges of his consciousness, keeping him upright and murmuring about taking the glass out. He nodded in agreement and consent, knowing full-well it would be bad if he tried to do it himself - or if he left it in. He'd seen kids get worse damage from less.
Ā The blonde did his best to keep himself upright, limbs pliant because he was starting to lack control over them. He held his hands out and cocked his head to the side so she could see the wound better; bit down hard on his crackled lip to keep himself awake - fresh pain worked better than old pain; old pain he'd been struggling with for hours.
"Your threats donāt scare me," but his possible actions sure did. Fizz reluctantly shut her mouth for a few minutes, letting him chastise her, for the benefit of staying alive. But it was a sigh emitting from her lips that caused the girl to speak up again, although rather softly so no one else but him could hear. "If it means anything, I suppose Iām sorry." Those words had a terrible taste to them, becauseĀ FizzĀ Ā Ā apologising? It was rare for someone to witness her apologising, but it slipped out anyway.
"See if I fuckin' care." River's jaw was set in a harrowed, harsh clench; teeth grinding as he glared at the brunette. He'd rip her throat out, make her shut up, quell the headache that she kept poking and prodding with her inane, useless comments-- and then she was apologizing, and the menacing downward swoop of his brows let up, confusion clear on his face.
"If you're sorry, do yourself a favor 'n don't talk. 've got a headache the size of the goddamn northern slum, 'n the last thing I need's your comments makin' it worse."

Culprit South ā¶ February & River
"I think Iāve got it," February said. She Ā stepped down onto the ground, careful not to put any weight on her injured foot. This was a place she knew well, and she was sure that her drug dealer, Ricky, wouldnāt like her bringing in strangers. He probably wouldnāt even be that happy to see her. Plus, she felt bad about making River carry her all over the place.Ā
"Thank you so much for everything," she said. "You really saved the day, and I totally owe you one. If you ever need anything, Iāll be there." With that, February turned toward the diner. Explaining this to everyone would be painful, but sheād get through it, just like sheād gotten through the rest of the day. She limped to the door, turning back to wave goodbye to River before she walked inside.
"Sure thing," River said, smiling curtly, knowing full-well he'd probably never see her again. But he didn't have any issues with being polite - his mama'd raised him right - and so he just waved back at her before heading off, hearing the noise of the bell ringing as February limped into the diner, the door pulling itself shut behind her.Ā
The sun was still out, bright rays making anything chrome shine, but if he didn't start heading back, he wouldn't be at the lab before nightfall. He'd do his errands later; it would all work out. Whistling a cheerful tune under his breath, River began walking home, boots crunching gravel and broken tarmac as he pulled his hoodie up over tufts of fine, blonde hair.
Come As You Are ā¶ River & Sage
The brunette couldnāt tell whether it was good that he didnāt remember blood on the floor. On one hand it could be that there was no blood but on the other it was also very likely that he didnāt remember because of head trauma. Swallowing down her own fears for him, she continued to guide him through the forest as gently as possible.
"Almost there." Sage could see the front door between the trees and she readjusted her grip on River. They moved smoothly, Sage not wanting to jarr the boy anymore than she had to. They reached the lab and Sage helped him in. "How about you come to my room. Let me fix you up before you sleep, okay?" She was asking out of courtesy but there was no way sheād let him leave her side in his state.
"Mm," River agreed, eyes flickering shut. It all hurt, and while pain was far from unfamiliar, it had never been pleasant. To top it all off, he was pretty sure he was still a little drunk, and staying awake in the face of it all wasn't easy. "Y'can.. Yeah. I jus' wanna sleep." His breathing was quiet, despite the circumstances; soft inhales through his nose, softer exhales from his mouth.Ā
The lab was dark around them, a far cry from the morning mist outside, but that suited River just fine, the sparse light making his head pound a little less. "Thank you." It was a sudden comment, spoken in a low, quiet tone. He knew when to be polite, after all, and Sage helping him definitely required it. She didn't have to help him, after all. Plenty of others wouldn't have.
Yeah well I was here first so, either leave or sit down and shut theĀ fuckĀ up.
"I'm already sittin' down, andĀ you'reĀ the one that started talkin', soĀ youĀ shut the fuck up before I decide to make sure you don't talk ever again," River spat, his voice a menacing hiss as he gave the girl an icy glare - the sharpened tips of his canines visible until his mouth shut resolutely as he finished chastising her. He'd often wondered if he could rip someone's throat out with his teeth. It was usually a thought that accompanied his brain when it was drug-addled, but right then and there, anger was enough to set it off; anger and exhaustion and pain. His knuckles and head hurt, and the brunette to his right was only making it worse. Leaving the alley with blood staining his mouth was probably not the best idea, but to Hell with that.
Culprit South ā¶ February & River
February concentrated on her breathing as River carried her toward Battery City. Any second, she thought she might hurl, but she really hoped she wouldnāt. She had been through enough already.Ā
As the city ebbed into view, February thought of where she could go once she got there. There was Bambi. Maybe she could meet her wherever she was staying to have her baby. Bambi would definitely help her, but that wasnāt fair to Bambi. She had so much to deal with, and taking care of February would only add to it. Staying with Bambi was a no.
She could try to find some of her parentsā old friends. They always hung around the same places (they never had anything better to do seeing as how they were the laziest people on earth), and they would jump at the chance to take her in again. She had been in charge of going out and getting drugs for them, and she always came through. But that was a bad idea. After her parents had been taken away, February had promised herself sheād never go back there. So staying with them was a no too.Ā
They were in the city now, and as they neared Mickieās Diner, February realized there was one person she hadnāt thought of yet: Ricky, the most unreliable drug dealer in the city. When he wasnāt missing a meeting with a client or turning up with half of what you asked for, Ricky was usually hanging out in the corner booth of Mickieās Diner. āCan you stop here? I know someone here who I can stay with.ā
"Sure. Wanna walk in there on your own, or.. ?" It was the least he could do, offering her that much - he'd already carried her all the way into the city, so a few paces more wouldn't matter. Mickie's Diner wasn't exactly in the good parts of town, which was a nice thing as far as River was concerned, the blonde Toy Soldier having a hard time blending in if he strayed from the grimier streets of Battery City. That required time and effort and nicer clothing than he was currently wearing, and he had none of that at hand.Ā
He stopped right outside the diner, not sure what February wanted yet. At least this way, if she wanted to walk in on her own, she wouldn't have to walk far on her bad foot.
Youāre not exactly on a bustling street, River. Who else could you be following?

Simon says fuck off.
Yeah, well, you can fuck right the fuck off yourself. 's not like this fuckin' alley's yours and yours alone, Simon.
[Pausing in the middle of the street, wide-eyed] You know, Iām not an idiot. I can tell when people are following me.
's not exactly you I'm followin'.
