I love fanfiction, I think the whole concept and how it’s grown is just incredible, so many people just so full of ideas and love for characters that they couldn’t stop themselves creating, pouring their hearts out onto paper or screen, hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands and more words just being used to breath stories into being. That people looked at the content we were given and went “we can fill in the gaps.” Is amazing! Because it works! The 2 hour film is never going to give us the slow burn but a 10+ chapter fanfic can! A series set in 2020 is very rarely going to put its characters in different settings but an AU fanfic can! You want to see your favourite ship now in a Wild West setting, boom done! Or a pirate ship? Sure! Come aboard! You want to turn up the spice and find out just how creative sex scenes can be? Plenty of explicit options to explore Some kinks and learn a few things! I have been on AO3 since my mid teens, so pretty much since it came into being and wow what an amazing site! Let’s just be thankful that someone out there went “let’s build a digital library for all this fanfiction, everyone is welcome to explore and read and enjoy, become members and contribute to building the library.” And look what has come of it, comments and praise, encouragement and friendships! Genuine communities engaging with one another, sharing ideas, helping work through stumbling blocks, making people who once felt alone realise they belong, to a community, to a fandom, to people who accept and embrace them! Fanfiction is so incredible because it’s limitless, it’s our imagination let loose with any boundaries imposed by the structure and setting of the shows/films removed. Any idea can be brought forth and placed on the shelves as a worthy contribution and that’s so fantastic. I genuinely cannot imagine not having it in my life, how else will I know how my otp would deal with finding out there is only one bed or how they would interact in a coffee shop? How the enemies to lovers trope can really be delivered in ways that blow my mind! There are people out there who watch and consume media whether it’s tv or film and go “that was nice, I wish there was more.” And I just wish they had the courage to begin looking for more because oh how they’ll find it, find it and go “yes, this is what I wanted. This is what I wanted.” Fanfiction is such a love letter to characters we all love and cherish and without it I think the world would be a much smaller place.
