Richard Ramirez & Eva O's relationship
Eva Ortiz who's known as Eva O was one of the pioneers of the deathrock scene and Goth Rock in the 80s & 90s, while trying to build a career and being a rockstar, she got involved with Richard Ramirez, and became the girlfriend of the death row Romeo in the late 80s.
Eva grew an obsession over Richard after reading about him in a magazine article and seeing him all over the media right after his arrest in 1985. "Tall" , "high cheekbones" and "big dark eyes" are some of his features that made Eva find him attractive, however, it wasn't just about the handsome satanist rockstar image for her, she was captivated by the darkness surrounding him, and she found herself resonating with his words and quotes in what she read about him, and it inspired her 'til the point she wrote the song "Night Stalker".
Eva wanted Richard to hear it, which led her to write 31 letters to him but she didn't send them until her friend gave her his address, then she sent them all in once to LA county jail where he was at the time thinking that bombarding him with letters would make it impossible to ignore her and Richard did what she hoped for and he wrote 31 letters back responding to each one of hers, they started writing back and forth and talking on the phone and she played him the song through the phone and he liked it so much.
She didn't see herself as one of these women who were all over the media talking about how they'd do anything for him, and for this reason she asked him to wave to the camera when he comes to the court to see it on TV, and he did it for her. she didn't see herself as a groupie, she saw it as real deep love.
Eva claimed that with him she was angry at the world, and he was the only positive thing in her life back then, she had demons of her own and thoughts of committing violence crimes and even planning on acting on her desires, so through their relationship Richard was always telling her not to follow these thoughts so she won't end up in the same place he's in, he cared deeply for her and for her well being, he was just one year older, they were each others company since she was the only person talking to him and he was the only person she talks to, both were loners, both had twisted dark minds and opinions that no one would understand but them, they were into the same stuff, music, true crime and all the weird and creepy, which made the connection more intense for both of them, especially her since she fixated on him so much.
The first time she visited him she was super nervous, and so was he, she was shocked by how tall and big he was seeing him through glass, bigger than he seems in the pictures, all bones. Eva O was the first person who'd visit him along with his family after his arrest, and for the following years she'd come and visit him and talk for so long, she even saw Madonna there when she came for her husband who was next to Richard, the guards would often tease her about music singing 'breaking the law!' and fake playing guitar in the air since Richard liked Judas Priest, she hoped one of them would let her touch Richard's hand or have a physical contact with him, so she asked one of them to let her hand him a magazine, and she did, feeling overwhelmed by it. Richard exposed himself to her often and she'd just laugh about it or ignore it. And with her he played the role of a sugar daddy, so would often give her money.
Eva started to be more annoyed by all the women who was visiting him everytime she find them lining up for every visit, in one of her visits which was around 1988 Richard purposed to her, but she rejected him, and after she left, he knew it was going to be her last time visiting him, which it was.
After that he kept sending letters to her, blaming her for her excuses for not visiting him, asking what went wrong, and he guessed she was jealous of what he called 'his other friends', sometimes mocking her and calling her "Evil O", he was sad about their break-up, even cried when she left and when he missed her.
She claimed that she would've said yes to him if he didn't open visits because of jealousy and the fact that she didn't wanna compete or be one of the many, she wanted to be special, though she would later think that it's all what he had, he'd have all these girls but then come back to his loneliness in his cell.
Eva got married and continued with her music carrier, her album 'Mister Death' were linked to R.R by her fans, but she opened about their relationship in the short film 'Just a guy' by Shoko Hara in 2020, then the Peacock series about The Night Stalker in 2024, where she said that now she looks back and ask herself why would she like to talk to somebody like that, and that what she had for Richard wasn't love but a mental illness, admitting that she was obsessive over the people she liked in her 20s. However, you can tell how much it effected her as a person to be into such a man who was the face of evil, or how so many people describe him, the Devil.
