was reminded recently about this ancient piece from my high school days (💀), but I surprised myself with how much I still like this one.
How do you get your art to look genuinely retro? I use a calligraphy brush and a screen tone brush but it's not enough.
Some tricks that might not immediately jump out at folks is blurriness!
With digital art, everything is very crisp and clean and if you wanna emulate traditional/vintage, it's gotta be a little on the messy side. Duplicating your line layer, setting the opacity lower and using gaussian blur on that layer will give you that slightly fuzzy ink bleed look you see in printed media like this ⬇️

Also using a stippling brush (or any messy scatter brush), setting it to erase mode/transparent and lightly going over your art to scuff it up... 🤌✨️ it makes the inking on the lines uneven, which happens naturally when using traditional inking pens (dries out, leaves streaks, ect)!
Also try using toned black inks and not pure black while lining! Or using a dark grey instead. If you examine old art, the inks may fade or change color slightly due to chemical reactions!
That may look pure black, but it's actually a very dark brown!
