“what are you talking about?”

this. This one small dialogue is so telling of Maria’s character. We have Shadow here, having this internal crisis, but he’s finally comfortable speaking his doubts out-loud.

and he only does so when he and Maria are alone, outside in the flowers. He could have said this doubt back at the fort when it first hit him that, GUN sees him as that movie monster. A freak. And she noticed that. She knew he needed to escape for alittle while to tell open up to her. so she sneaks them out. She can’t get him out completely but she can give him a moment. Away from the testing, away from the labs, and away from judgement. It’s just them and the stars.

and really Maria opens up first to shadow, she wants to share her favorite things with him.

The stars. How much she sees the beauty and wonder in them, how she sees that same wonder in him. “look at those stars! There like diamonds!” “I wonder which one you came from!” That he is her favorite star. Her best friend.

and when he starts doubting his place, where he comes from and his life…

She is there to remind him… even if he can’t remember his home. He has a new one, Her.

“this is your home, Shadow… earth.” She wants him to know that he is home. That She is his home, his family. That even if he is doubting himself, she is there. He has someone. this. This makes shadow finally ask the question, addressing the fear he has.

and then the famous line comes in

“Maria, am I dangerous?” And her immediate response is

“What are you talking about?” In Maria’s mind, Shadow was never dangerous. he was her friend. He was the only one to dance with her, listen to her play guitar. He was the only one who would watch movies with her, run around the base, skating into poor scientists. Causing a mess! He was the only one to show kindness back to her in that base. He was her brother. the minute she reached out to him in the tube, all she wanted was to be friendly. And he returned it. Sealing their fate as family. A monster wouldn’t do that.

Finally. Seriously, guys, Vox and Velvette are just as bad as Val. And they're a team. They're into it. Fix your fucking characterizations. I'm so sick of Vox (and Velvette) being shown to be redeemable or somehow unwittingly victims in Val's cruelty.

Being homoerotically obsessed with Alastor doesn't make Vox any less evil than Val.

Being lightly annoyed with Val's nonsense doesn't make Velvette more redeemable than him.
