This is bat friendly street lighting, which not only looks sick as fuck but allows bats to pass through without disturbance, as they cannot see red.

I wanted to last year but I 'never got round to it'. I kill a lot of plants (not on purpose. ADHD and constant watering is hard, and sometimes it's just me confused as fuck about why I suddenly have x thing happening to my leaves) and kind of felt it was hopeless anyway.

Then I was reading your posts, and how you were seeing biodiversity in even small little hopeful changes. And I was like. Hey. Even if I do kill the plants. They will feed insects for a little, while they survive, and after, I can put them in my compost pile and they will feed more insects, and the flowers (if I get any) will feed bees (which are my special children) and so, even if it doesn't give me food, and even if they die, it might be worth it to try.

I never ate the cilantro. Turns out my flatmate has the soap gene. But it flowered like CRAZY and there were SO many happy pollinators.

I ate so many green onion shoots. The bulbs I still haven't pulled because they just keep giving me shoots to eat.

The mint is going HAM and also the insects loved the flowers.

The cucumber plants went absolutely APESHIT and produced flowers ALL SUMMER, and they were BEAUTIFUL, and I couldn't walk outside without a bee or, occasionally, a butterfly dropping by. It's STILL FLOWERING in NOVEMBER in PHILLY and now I have ladybugs and fireflies. FIREFLIES! I didn't see a single one last year and now they love my balcony and I love them so much. I only got two cucumbers but I don't even care.

I had a bunch of nonedibles in a little greenhouse thing, and they flowered too, and I'd find random bugs (a grasshopper. Huge. Massive) in there hanging out. They died when the greenhouse got blown over but they lasted longer than I ever expected to keep a plant alive.

The birds came by my balcony despite the cat avidly watching them by the window. More types of birds, too. And my little compost box is constantly happy with fruit flies and regular flies and things I don't recognize. I never did get around to buying worms, but I haven't had to because the insects are having a blast in there and every time I think "oh, it'll be full" it is, once again, not full because it has been broken down further.

There is a tiny ecosystem on my 6th floor apartment balcony because you get excited about plants, and it was inspiring enough to get me off my ass. Because even if I didn't eat my plants, you reminded me SOMETHING ELSE WOULD.

When you go for an MLS (Master’s of Library Science, which is a thing, and which is usually required for “professional-level” library work [which is also a weird and contentious concept that I won’t go into here]), one of the things you study is the organization of information. This deals with how to determine what a book or other material is “about"—a concept we tongue-in-cheek call “aboutness"—and how to convey that to a potential user of the item and make it easy for them to find. Things like keywords and subject headings, do I put this book about how often wild birds attack aerial drones in with books about birds or with books about technology, if its a fictional novel do I put fantasy in it’s own section or mix it in with all of the other fiction, so on and so on.

OP is organizing books by how they would look for them. OP’s partner is thinking in terms of aboutness. This is a system that works for OP because it’s their personal library: they know basically what books they own and they only own books that are relevant to them, and if they know what the book looks like, that can be a quick way to find it.

In a library that assumes the public (or people who do not own that particular collection of books) are using the collection, that doesn’t work. Books are often re-issued in multiple covers, or re-bound in new covers when they get worn out, and if the user doesn’t know what the book looks like or is expecting a different cover, they’re lost. That’s why non-personal libraries used standardized cataloging systems like the Dewey Decimal System or Library of Congress System to organize a book by what it’s “about”, and then put books about the same or similar topics together, marked with labels and signage so a person unfamiliar with the book or collection can find their way to it.

Basically, OP’s system works for their own personal library, because it’s best suited to how the primary user—OP themselves—looks for books. OP’s librarian partner is coming from a background of thinking in terms of a public-facing collection, where aboutness is the key criteria and communicating it to a user unfamiliar with the collection is the priority.

Logan: Much like Coco's attitude to learning. All magic is precious and fascinating. Differently, though, he has that "must spend 24/7 learning everything there is to know about magic." Loves coming up with useful/utility spells and contraptions. Would love to do nothing but study for the rest of his life

Patton: Literally Tetia. Bouncey happy and focuses on the "magic is supposed to make people happy" aspect. Eager to take teach test so he can get to the helping people part faster. Sticks to helping animals in the meantime. Excited to learn that the Shield test is helping animals.

Roman: Wants to become a famous witch for inventing new never-before-seen fancy spells. Real works of magical art. Leans heavily into the "artistic" side of magic and away from the "functional" aspect. Very creative, but those spells are often just for show and not very practical. Needs to be pushed to make practical spells, and even then makes them shiny and fancy out of spite.

Virgil: Scared he might accidentally cast a wrong spell, or might cast forbidden magic on accident. Needs to be encouraged to learn anything outside the basics, because without outside influence that child is sticking to simple spells. Very very good at simple spells, scared to try and make his own unique spells.

Remus: Wants to be a brimhat so badddddd I mean look at those brim hats they can do cool things I can't do and they're fashionable about it why can't I do that. Comes up with wild and crazy spell ideas but doesn't cast them (at least not until he's older)

Janus: Wants to grow up to be a healing witch. He knows that's forbidden magic, but thinks the KM are stupid. Why can't we heal people. Magic is supposed to help people, yet certain types of helping people are against the law? That makes no sense. Why are the KM the only ones allowed to use a forbidden spell. This whole society is built on a lie so the cops can rule the world. Does a fun game with Remus which is "Try to see if I can loophole Remus' fun ideas into not being forbidden on technicality" ( Remus is both impressed by the malicious compliance and upset over the "spirit of the spell" not being kept in Janus' draft, because the whole point is its forbidden. In turn, Remus tries to close as many loop holes as possible. No spells are actually cast in this game, just thought of / pencil drawn.)

Still working on ideas for what they become when they grow up. Obvs I'm making Jan and Re brimhats. Those two are not law-abiding witches.
