A Vacation Riding experience from my past. My brother-in law and I wanted to go to the Sturgis South Dakota Motorcycle rally in 2007. We chose to do a Fly and Ride.
We flew to Denver and rented Harleys at Mile High Harley Davidson. We Rode through Rocky Mountain National Park, camping inside of the park. It was cold near the top of the mountains even though it was early July! We actually had a snowball fight!
One thing that sticks in my mind was trying to get our campfire started. The air was so thin, that it took a very long time to get it started, and to keep in going, however, we finally met with success and were able to eat our hobo dinners. (Feel free to ask about these)
We then rode on to Yellowstone National Park. We entered from the Idaho (West) side. It began to sleet as we entered into the park. We spotted a small Grizzly bear crossing the road in the distance ahead of us. Like fools, we chose to stop our bikes on the side of the road and go after it to get a picture (don't do this at home)
We spent three days in the park, camping on the east side. We saw Old Faithful, the Falls and many other beautiful areas of the park. Onward toward Sturgis we rode. We crossed over the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming. Be on alert for high winds when riding int the Bighorns! We camped somewhere along the way, then headed toward the Devil's tower.
If you have never been to Devil's tower in Wyoming, I highly recommend going to see it. Two wheels in my opinion is the best way to get there! You'll see the story of how the tower came to be. There are legends, that are worth reading about.
Did you know that the Devils tower is the first National Monument? Also, if you are feeling adventurous, you can actually climb the devil's tower. That, my friend, could take some time.
We finally made it into Sturgis. Eventually got to our campsite. The traffic was very heavy.
Sturgis was a great time, and the area rides are Awesome! I'll write more about that experience another time.
Upon leaving Sturgis, we rode though Nebraska. When stopping for gas, we were only able to find the 85 octane stuff. Our Hogs didn't really like that much, but we were able to continue onward back into Wyoming.
If you have never ridden through the eastern portion of Wyoming, here's a tip. Bring extra fuel! The gas stations are sparse. We nearly ran out of gas when we finally spotted a pull off and were able to 'coast' up to the pumps. With a five-gallon tank, we both pumped nearly 4.8 gallons! Whew! that was close!
After that stop, we rode on back into Denver. We stayed in a hotel this time, as we were weary from the road. We dropped off our Bikes, caught our Planes, and flew on back home. It was a fantastic way to save time for our Vacation!
I can help you with a similar trip. Just DM me, and we can go from there.
What a show! A laser light show INSIDE of a Cave!. My Facebook Group will have more!.
