....the bullets...
Went to see this exhibition. It was really good. What the overwhelming thought that I came with was how clean the Sahara was in c1950; there was no rubbish, in particular no plastic, no graffitti. Poverty yes, disease and flies yes, but a way of life so different to that now. What they needed was fresh clean water and sewage facilities which they have patchily acquired but also acquired many more things, many not so desirable. But we do not really think about progress and development. sales of i phones and GNP per head, lots of mega rich, are crass measurements of progress but our governments are slaves to it..

# 59 - Dreams
When we are a child we are asked what we want to be when we grow up. Repeatedly asked, even by strangers. For most of us our childhood dreams and aspirations remain that and are locked in childhood. But for quite a few these grow and take control. Initially we are encouraged; it is good to have dreams. But these can have the most profound influence. The very rare case is someone who says they want to be a doctor and becomes one. There are not many astronauts ! Dancers that grow too tall. Gardeners with allergies. It all happens when we are not in a position to judge, astute self criticism all but impossible. So for many they have to pick up the pieces later on. For some it will be a valuable learning curve. They can find another staircase to climb. For others there will be bitterness and regret over wasted hours of precious life at an early stage. Maybe the worst scenario is the not knowing. A recurring theme I pose. No understanding of why the dreams were not being fulfilled. Nowhere to get answers. Does one give up ? The brain aches through thought.

#57 - Cold as ice
Not hot blooded. Cold as ice. The bad man or woman doing something clinical without remorse. The premeditated murder at the extreme.
But we all can be bad. Even premeditated bad.
Somehow revenge is not seen as negatively as "cold as ice". In the movies it has often portrayed as something glorious. Personally I think it is highly negative for society and the individual. Anyway we can all be bad. Showing a colleague at work in bad light for personal gain. Cheating on a partner. Telling something that you were entrusted to keep secret. Many examples.
We all can be bad. After the "bad moment". Time to reflect. Maybe wonder why you did it. Scared because the consequences were greater than you expected. The world is more complicated. The intertwining of future events more complex.
Reflect. The shiver down the spine will pass. Face it. Pick up the pieces. Everything has a reason. Reflect.

# 55 - Blocked
Sometimes we reflect. We contemplate. We cannot quite grasp what is really going on. We are missing something, a piece of the jigsaw. No matter how hard we think and think we do not understand why the path is blocked. Many reasons enter the brain. But which one ? Is there something that we have not considered? It hurts. We want to know. We want to get on with our lives. No book to look into, no person to ask. We are blocked.
It can happen in a multiple of situations. Whether in a relationship, one's career or with family, the same thought processes go through our head. We are blocked. We do not know why. We want to know. We sigh.

# 53 - Broken
Since time immemorial we have clung to the concept of the broken heart. Usually it is the callous man discarding the loving woman. Men are rarely portrayed as broken hearted. In the stereotype the woman suffers significantly more than the male.
But men have feelings. Men are emotional. Sometimes separating is the best thing, despite the heartbreak, so life can move on. How many people do not leave a relationship, well past its sell by date, because they do not want their partner of many years to suffer so. Yet the relationship must suffer because of such thoughts. And would it not be better to be honest, so that the other person can, after anguish, put their life together and maybe find more love somewhere else.
Most of us feel pain when we have to make someone suffer. We reflect on that.

#51 - Aspects
The glance that captures all. Love at first sight. ...shows the true inner feelings. How much are these just myths, not bearing much scrutiny. Can any of us be captured in one photograph. Can we make any judgement about anybody on meeting briefly just once ? To a greater or lesser extent I believe none of us want to reveal too much. We have private thoughts and feelings. Which can lead to what other people view as actions out of character. One goes to a portrait gallery and view all those representations of people which are usually deemed to reflect them. We can be easily fooled in real life. What not there as well. To a certain extent it is down to trust in the artist. On what basis can we trust. I often wonder. I just read the biography of someone who recently died who conveniently omitted large aspects of his life. The biographer must have wittingly done this. That is sad.
I feel at best each photograph I take captures an aspect at a particular time. Several aspects thus provide more in the contemplation of what is presented. I have edited of course. In #50 I took many images and selected three. There is no clothing, no strong background to give clues. Just the person as they were revealing themselves to me one afternoon. A real person.

#49 - Danger
For many of us, we are drawn to it. One step nearer but still be able to exit. Still be in control. We want to see what is beyond the red plastic netting. We want to talk to the man marked dangerous. We want the thrill of the off piste run. To go to the churchyard at night. But the boundary is not always clear. We cross it inadvertently and too late to go back to the same point. We know this happens but people time and time again repeat mistakes. Must be in our DNA.
And who says what is dangerous. We may disagree. Or something may be dangerous to one person and not enough. And as I have said before the dangerous man but not be so dangerous after all. People assume and generalise. One can play too safe. Pushing one's boundaries can be healthy. Keep one's feet on the ground but enjoy life to its fullest. Yes enjoy.
