"Time it was, and what a time it was...
...it was a time of innocence, a time of confidences..." simon & garfunkel
I turned 49 in June.
That is uncomfortably close to 50. Fifty years seems a very long time to be alive.
When I was little I had to listen to 8-tracks and 45s. I played cars with my brother outside instead of on a Wii. I used a rotary phone and hated busy signals, because I had to call back. Call waiting, and answering machines were such awesome ideas that came later.
I remember watching Star Trek and the Jetsons and thought how cool their communication devices were. I mean the Jetsons could FaceTime right?
I have never been one to obsess over age however. I believe you are as young or old as you act or feel. And being/feeling old is relative.
What I find disturbing though is how so many people go through life with no thought of why we are here. Seriously amazes me how so many believe that we are here so that we can make some money, pay our bills, eat well, accumulate stuff, get educated so that more stuff can be afforded, have kids, pass those ideas and whatever money and stuff we have on to them and on and on it goes. Then there are the celebrated who for whatever reason attain extra esteem from all the others. This esteem may be deserved or undeserved it doesn't really matter it just seems so pointless when you shrink it all down and consider what we as humans are doing. Just seems like there should be something more meaningful.
Solomon from the bible called it all vanity.
Ecclesiastes 1:2,3 “'The greatest vanity!' the congregator has said, 'the greatest vanity! Everything is vanity!'What profit does a man have in all his hard work at which he works hard under the sun?"
In fact that whole first chapter of Ecclesiastes really helps us put life in perspective. It is fleeting.
I just don't believe that was God's plan though. I believe what it says in Ecclesiastes 3:11- "Everything he has made pretty in its time. Even time indefinite he has put in their heart, that mankind may never find out the work that the [true] God has made from the start to the finish."
I think it is our responsibility to find the answer to why we are here. Why were we given life? Is this life all there is? Will the planet be destroyed?
I don't want to go to heaven. Is there something else?

It is getting more and more difficult for me to focus these days.
So yesterday I left work with a co-worker and we were outside talking by our vehicles before we took off. While we were standing there this lady who was thin, and unbathed, walks up like she knows us. She starts telling me that "Steve" gave me 20 bucks and she was going to wait here because he would be back. I told her I didn't know Steve and he didn't give me 20 bucks and she argued with me a little bit and gave me some more information hoping to refresh my memory. After a little while she decided to cross the street and walk up to an empty parked car and she started talking to imaginary people first in the front seat and then in the back. She was having a very animated conversation, when I left. I returned about 30-45 minutes later to go back to work and she was still there having a lengthy conversation with herself.
I wonder how she got to that moment in her life. I wonder what her story is. Most likely she wouldn't even be able to answer that question if asked. Does she have no one who cares for her? Where is she now?
Another thing I don't understand is why so many people are comfortable ignoring the people with mental health issues who roam the streets.
All I know is she has been haunting my thoughts.
