𝐊𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐑𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐬 ⋆˚࿔
Someone in my inbox asked me for my kook year Riara headcanons and I accidentally deleted it after I had finished writing everything. A common type of mistake for me to make i’m afraid. But, to that person, i’ll be answering you in this post instead! I’m sorry it took some time, i just wasn’t motivated to rewrite everything but since I love reminiscing about Kies kook year i’ll accept the mission.
-Upon arriving at the kook academy Kiara must navigate the new environment all on her own. She’s never made any effort to blend in with any of the kooks before, to her they’re simply too different from her. Their morals clash too much, and there’s nothing she despises more than the fake show they put on. Despite her doubts she has promised herself to give it a chance this time, mostly influenced by the little girl inside of her, who to some extent still craves acceptance from her parents. She knows how important her doing this is to them.
Just as she had anticipated, Kiara ends up being the odd one out. She doesn’t find anyone she connects with and feels shut down by all the kooks. Even when they are smiling at her and playing nice, she notices the subtle passive aggressive comments and mocking faces they make her way. She was already known as the girl who trashed around with pogues.
Rafe Cameron, being the asshole that he is, was not making her time any easier. Whenever they pass each other in the hallway he makes sure to make his presence known to her, with all from comments about her being a half pogue to disgusting flirting that’s uncomfortable and dehumanizing on its own.
He would never admit it out loud, but something about Kiara fascinates him. It’s cliche, but she is nothing like the other kook girls he’s always around at parties. She doesn’t take his insults, if anything she bites back twice has hard, she has the opportunity to be around kooks like himself, but instead she for most of her life has chosen to surround herself with pogues. A part of him also feels envious of the perceived freedom she seems to have, not knowing she also struggles with parental expectations just like him.
-It’s not until Sarah and Kiara end up becoming attached to each others hips that Rafe Cameron’s fascination with the girl reaches an all time high.
Being Sarah’s friend becomes apart of her whole identity. It opens up a new safety net that she’s never had before during her time at the academy. Kiara is always at tannyhil, almost more than she is at her own house and Rafe definitely notices.
He resents her presence as much as he is excited by it. With Kiara always being around his thoughts about her grow stronger. It’s as if the carrera girl is occupying his thoughts every single hour he’s awake, but on the other hand this is his opportunity to get to watch her closer.
Rafe begins to look for excuses to be around her and Sarah as much as possible. Often storming into his sister’s room, cluelessly pretending to look around for something he claimed he forgot there prior. Meanwhile all he cares about is finding out as much about Kiara as possible. He picks up small details about her, absorb as much of her sense of humor as he can and he finds his chest twitching whenever a boy is mentioned in their conversation, even in a platonic manner.
He doesn’t understand why, but he’s certainly intrigued by her.
-Rafe doesn’t know when it starts, but he finds himself standing outside of Sarah’s room whenever the door is slightly open. He will peek through the door with as much caution as possible, trying to get all glimpses of Kie that he can get. Everything about his sister’s best friend is so weirdly…interesting.
One day he ends up catching them while they’re changing into their nightwear. He stares at Kiara’s bare body longer than he’d admit, wishing he could almost print the sight. After realizing what he was doing, he quickly leaves. To him it wasn’t a big deal think. He tells himself it wasn’t creepy, after all he wasn’t there to see her change. He cherishes the memory, thinking about Kiara’s chest whenever the two are having a conversation.
Kiara notices Rafe often happens to conveniently be around when her and Sarah are spending time together, but chooses to brush it off as her friends asshole brother trying as hard as possible to make her uncomfortable. Little did she know he had been watching her change.
This one is very much creeploser!rafe, and i understand that’s not for everyone. But to me, that’s pretty central to their dynamic. And hey, it’s mentioned in the pogue scrapbook that he used to creep on her..no idea how canon that is but.
-Sarah begins to take Kiara with her to all of the many kook parties. The downside with them is that the kook circles are so knight that every asshole that she’s trying to avoid ends up being at them, that includes Rafe Cameron.
One night, she walks in one him and some other kooks snorting coke at the balcony. She knew he was a user. Everyone whispered about it as if was peak entertainment. It was practically apart of his reputation. Only 17 and snorted cocaine like no other. Besides, Kiara had witnessed him bragging about it first hand at the academy. He was talking to two other guys. It was almost pathetic in a way, as if he was trying to impress them by bringing up his drug usage. She would have hated for her life to be as shallow as the life of Rafe Cameron.
But seeing him actually snort the lines one by one brought out a new feeling in her chest. She couldn’t tell if it was pity or disgust, or a sense of both. One thing was clear to her, seeing his pupils getting wider and his tone completely changing scared her.
She threw a sarcastic comment about how pathetic they were, before quickly walking off to find Sarah. The comment stuck with him for a bit. He didn’t know when he had started caring about Kiara Carreras approval, but it stung knowing she had seen him at such a bad time.
Later that night, she asks Sarah about Rafes cocaine use. She tells herself that it’s because she cares about Sarah, not Rafe. Despite their strained relationship it must hurt seeing your own brother lose himself to drugs. Sarah gave her a short answer about how her brother has always been impulsive and that he was bound to make dumb mistakes like those. She could see that Sarah was hurt by it, but she wasn’t someone who opened up very easily.
She hates that for the next days, she can’t stop stop get the image of Rafe Cameron bent over the table snorting white powder out of her head.
-One day when Kiara was entering tannyhill to hangout with Sarah like every other day she heard two loud male voices coming from the living room. Being the curious girl that she is, she of course ends up following the voices. What she ends up seeing are the two cameron men having a screaming match. She wasn’t sure what the argument was about exactly, but she did hear a bunch of insults from Ward directed towards Rafe. The insults ranged from how useless he is, about how he needs to stop embarrassing him and taking more responsibility of the Cameron name.
The first thing that got to Kiara was how easily the insults escaped Ward mouth, like this wasn’t the first time they had been said. The second thing was how Rafe quickly gave in and shut his mouth, like a dog submitting to his owner, again like this wasn’t the first time that this had happened. The new side of Ward Cameron that she had witnessed felt weird. It was the same Ward Cameron who her best friend spoke so highly of, almost as if the cameron siblings didn’t share the same parent.
After quietly sneaking away from the scene, she felt weird. She had always assumed that Rafe was just a typical kook asshole with a trust fund but the interaction that she had just witnessed might be evidence that there was more to him. If it was one thing Kiara understood more than anyone, it was the feeling of disappointing one’s parents.
-It’s not until another party that Kiara and Rafe actually share a conversation. A conversation that’s not full with petty insults and someone leaving annoyed. An actual one. It took a few drinks on her part, and god knows what substance on Rafes part but they got there.
Sarah had ran off with her boyfriend of the week (this isn’t sarah slander i love her), leaving Kiara alone and out of place in the mansion where the party was held. She quickly escaped to the first quiet room she could find, where she found no one other than Rafe Cameron sitting on the bed, phone in hand talking to someone and pupils dilated. She heard him whisper something about how he’s trying, and won’t disappoint the person on the other end again before hanging up and covering his head in his hands.
Kiara did something she never would have done sober, which was sitting down next to the boy. She wasn’t sure how to comfort him, so she just began to ask questions she would never have asked sober, and in return he answered with answers he would never have given sober.
Kiara learnt a few new things about Rafe Cameron: He was afraid of disappointing his father, he hated cocaine but couldn’t go through the day without it, he was jealous of his little sister and he had been having a very turbulent night that ended with his father telling him on the phone that he won’t pick him up from the party despite him being all coked up. Wards logic was that he needed to learn how to deal with his shit himself for once.
After learning all this new information about him, she felt weird. It was a strange contradiction that the biggest asshole on the island had such a different side behind closed doors. She was never going to understand Rafe Cameron, but a little progress felt like a lot with someone like him.
-Due to Sarah’s new relationship with the Thornton boy Kiara finds herself forced to spend a lot of time with Sarah, Topper, Kelce and Rafe.
After her encounter with Rafe at the party, the one she’s not even sure if he remembers (he does) she feels less on edge around him. That doesn’t mean her opinion on him is reformed. He’s still an arrogant jerk more often than not, but coexisting with him is not as hard as she thought it would be. They still bicker, he still manages to annoy her to no end but she almost finds herself enjoys his company. Almost. She even finds herself throwing flirty comments back at him, not knowing that those moments don’t leave his head.
They have conversations with one another when they’re all hanging out, they share blunts and laughters together and gossip about the others, placing bets on how long Sarah and Topper will last while cracking jokes about how down bad he is for her. Kelce often joins in too.
At one point Sarah jokes about how cozy Kiara has gotten with her brother, which Kiara quickly shuts off. Her and Rafe were too different to ever be friends.
-If it’s one thing about Rafe Cameron that she’s never going to respect, it’s how he speaks of the pogues. She often catches him making comments about them when they’re all hanging out, causing her to feel more guilty about her new life with the kooks. Abandoning them was one thing, but hanging out with someone who viewed the boys who were still so important to her as inferior was a betrayal itself.
Rafe is often afraid that Kiara one day will return to her roots. She’s new to the kook life, and will never truly belong with them even if that’s what he is trying to tell himself. And if it’s something Rafe Cameron knows about more than anyone else, it’s his sisters tendency to push people away. He dreads the day he will lose her to the pogues.
