Twitter says account passwords were not hacked but users should still change them to be safe.
This was under “BREAKING NEWS” on CNN this morning. It seems like privacy online has been a huge focal point in the media recently. The fact that arguably two of the most popular social media sites have had issues protecting their customer’s data does not put social media in a great light. Things have to change or they will be replaced by other, more secure platforms, whatever that may be.

I found that this related a lot to our discussion last Thursday about ethics in tech. I think that we are headed in the direction of positive change now that these scandals have revealed the flaws in tech companies.
Facebook announced it's getting into online dating -- a surprising move that comes just six weeks after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The timing couldn't be more off for the news.
Each social media platform has something about it that focuses on. For instance, Snapchat is for quick conversations and pictures, Instagram is for photos, Twitter is for quick thoughts and Tinder is for dating. Facebook, however, is trying to encompass all of that. Recently they added “stories” which Instagram and Snapchat utilize, and now they are trying to be like Tinder. I heard that millennials are less interested in Facebook these days, so this is probably their attempt to reach that demographic.
Instagram is adding a bunch of new features
Some cool new things to come to these apps, as they try to integrate usage and make their platforms more identical to the others. I use a lot of GoPro apps so maybe this will give me that extra push that I need to post more on my other social media handles? Anyways these new features look pretty cool and easy to use.
Hopefully there is enough information that gets put out so people can understand how to use these new features. Then again these features are being added to apps like GoPro which already ask for some rather high level of engagement and understanding. Maybe these new features are going to be of the same caliber.

After four decades, police believe they've finally caught the Golden State Killer.
With the help of DNA website police finally found a suspect that they believe is the Golden State Killer after 40 years.
I thought that it was crazy that after 40 years, police found a suspect for all the murders, rapes, and burglaries. This was because of a DNA matching website that was made for finding long lost relatives. This website was called GEDmatch where you could look of people that had DNA that was your own, or you could put in DNA and find matches.
This police found this suspect because of the DNA samples that the police had from 1978, and then the locations that the murders took place.
Hopefully this is a match, to put the families at ease.
A woman wanted for identity theft across the metroplex is now behind bars.
Another way that social media is connecting us all. Police caught a criminal by blast tweeting a mug shot of a woman. The post got so many likes, retweets, and responses that they caught the suspect.
They received over 40 tips from Twitter. Who knew that social media was going to be another way to catch criminals.
This relates to the way that the class was run because of the fact that the world is changing and the police and the other law is evolving to the changing time.

“Having disclosures is important, the Princeton paper notes, because posts with affiliate links usually get more engagement from users. This means they’re more likely to be picked up by algorithms and shown to users through search or in their feeds.“
The line is even fuzzier with women’s fashion/beauty, which the article identifies as having the most affiliate links. Affiliate ads are a very specific type of advertising where the influencer publishing the link received commission if the link is used--just one smalll part of the myriad other ways fashion/beauty influencers have commercial influence. This statistic isn’t surprising, but the idea that this helps set off algorithms is interesting.

This desire for relatability is especially pervasive for young female celebrities who utilize their social media to position themselves within girl culture to emphasize the “stars are just like us” narrative of contemporary celebrity. How many ads have you encountered today? On this week's radio show, we discuss the insidiousness of advertising in American media.
Long but interesting NPR Hidden Brain segment on how impactful advertising is, particularly on children. Ads seen in one’s youth can impact purchasing decisions in adulthood, which is really interesting to think about in the context of digital media advertising and how integrated, targeted, and often almost invisible it is. Also raises questions we’ve touched on in class about young teens’ and kids’ activity online, which usually doesn’t address the advertising aspect but maybe should.
You have no control over your data, even your DNA
The New York Times reported late yesterday that the “Golden State Killer,” responsible for at least 50 rapes and 12 murders during the 1990s, was identified as 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo and arrested shortly thereafter.
Interesting point about how our even our genetic material is embedded into digital media!
“While the arrest of DeAngelo makes the world a safer place, it also draws attention to the fact that in the case of genetic databases, complete, informed consent, particularly by people who aren’t using the service directly, is basically impossible.“
John Legere and Marcelo Claure told CNN's Richard Quest the combination of T-Mobile and Sprint will allow them to build a 5G network more quickly and create jobs while keeping prices low. They think regulators will approve the deal.
Because I am still a bit shocked by this merger, figured I would post another one. Still pretty crazy to think that this is happening, we will see what ends up happening.
A huge bet on Sprint has cost SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son a lot. And now he is set to do something he previously insisted was unthinkable: give up control.

Final Reflection: Digital Media and Society
I did not know much about the digital media before taking this class, but now I know a whole lot more about it. I learned a lot about the history of its creation as well as what the “digital media” is. I learned about how our identity relates to and is structured through social media platforms. I learned about how issues such as racism and surveillance are a recurring problem within the digital medias framework. I learned a little bit more about certain controversies associated with the digital world such as copyright and net neutrality. I also had the opportunity to work with online platforms (Storymaps and Prezi) that I was not to familiar with. Though this was challenging at times, it felt good creating entire projects through those platforms and I felt like I obtained new skills from it. Overall, I learned a lot in this class and in my opinion, the information provided is very useful to this generation, especially to those of us who are recurring digital media users/consumers and/or whose work is dependent on many of the platforms associated with digital media.
Went to read a yahoo article today and this popped up. I am assuming that this is in response to Facebook/ users being concerned about how their data is being used. It did provide a key points section to (supposedly) provide users with a quick understanding of the updates.
