Todays question: Does Quayert have the highest killcount of Modessit protagonists? (Aside from Aluicus and Wendra double killing an entire civilization)
This is an amazing question that I am unprepared to statistically answer lmfao
I’ve got the most experience with the Imager Portfolio and Grand Illusion and out of those…….. aw man I really wanted to say Quaeryt but then I remembered how Rhenn basically levels Ferrum in Imagers Intrigue (I just looked it up in the book and he estimated possibly millions dead????)
All that being said, in terms of direct kills probably Quaeryt, in terms of indirect kills probably Rhenn??
oh my god I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WERE OTHER MODESITT FANS ON TUMBLR please tell me you're still active, i crave a fandom so bad
Yes! Hello! I’m still around!!!
Always glad to meet other fans!! What’s your fav Modesitt book??
whoops, real life got busy for a hot minute there, BUT HI HELLO!!
if i had to absolutely narrow it down, i think the modesitt book that i love the most (aka left me a sobbing mess by the end of it) is soarer's choice, which iirc is the 6th book of the corean chronicles. contrary to the majority of fans, i haven't read a ton of the recluce series, so the first series i really got into was that one, which... i read over a decade ago by this point. i do plan to read more recluce eventually, though.
but i do think my favorite series overall is the imager portfolio because i love the magic system and the politics, and i just finished rereading the first three books. i'm actually reading scholar for the first time now because rhenn's last book was the last modesitt book i read before taking a long and unplanned reading hiatus.
so far, i'm honestly a little impressed that quaeryt's got less compunctions than most modesitt protagonists to kill. usually in self-defense, but i'm ngl i was quite pleased he got rid of those two patrollers in nacliano. i'm roughly 40 chapters in so far and curious to see where it all goes!
have you been reading any more modesitt books lately? or any other writer or series you'd recommend?
Awesome!!! Yeah going from Rhenn to Quaeryt is such a shock to the system about their murder tendencies lol. And I feel that about the unplanned reading hiatus!
If you like the imager portfolio, I’ve found that Modesitt’s Grand Illusion series is pretty similar (albeit with a different magic system), and I’ve enjoyed it a lot!!
In terms of other writers/series, I’m always a sucker for anything by Ursula K Le Guin (especially a wizard of earthsea). I’d also recommend the Murderbot series by Martha Wells, A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine, or the Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lycnh. I’m gonna cut myself off there before I list every book on my shelves hahaha

Last year, I read Isolate by L. E. Modesitt Jr, a gaslamp political fantasy about two security aides who protect a government councilor. This year (well, technically Christmas 2022 loll), I bought the sequel, Councilor – and I’m enjoying it so much that I had to draw some fanart for it! XDD
Here we have Councilor Obreduur in the middle (whom I imagine looks like Peter Cushing lmaoo), and his two security aides: the empath Avraal Ysella on the left, and Steffan Dekkard on the right. Steffan is an isolate, meaning he is invulnerable to empath attacks and senses.
Oh, and also, a very Happy New Year to y’all!! <333

This man and the audacity he has
Delighted by Modesitt canonizing the existence of Colorado in the Grand Illusion Universe
Rhenn just puts Dichartyn through so much
end of book 2: explosion count is 3 (4 if you count the tower thing, maybe?)
book 3: opens with explosion; Rhenn must investigate
me, eyes narrowed: this is going to end badly for the explosion count, eh?
Me, side eyeing book 3: well the name of this blog had to come from somewhere 😊
reached chapter 64, found the source of your blog’s name, and by my rough count there are some 300 pages left, which gives us plenty of time for more explosions. poor rhenn.
finished book 3;
official count of explosions in which Rhenn was actually present (and therefore nearly killed, poor boy) (in all books) ... 6? (3 in book 3 alone!).
Number of significant but explosions in which rhenn is not present but was partially involved ... hm. if we count the entire attack on ferrum as 1 (because i’m too lazy to count it was more), and the majority of the ferrum attacks as 1 (again because we never get a real count of the numbers) excepting only those we get a separate description of...that’s another 3? or 4?
Do, end result:
Dichartyn (from the grave) at rhenn: Stop getting in explosions!
Rhenn, not from the grave (yet),: nah bitch! (rides off on wheelies)
I am so proud of you for counting all of the explosions
(I am also excited to see your thoughts on Quaeryt in the next imager books 👀)

look i’m only half way through this book and the number of explosions has greatly exceeded even my expectations. even only counting the ones rhenn was only partially involved in; i can’t wait for the rest of them~!
The way that I am grinning evilly over here
🫡 best of luck

Have your read the Lord Protector's Daughter or the Lady Protector's books? there are two trilogies attached as well, of which I've read one, and it was okay, but I really love that duology!
I just started the imagers portfolio, not even sure what the other series you mention is, but i know I love Modesitt so maybe I'll read it eventually.
Hello!!!!! I have not read those ones yet, but they’re on my to-read list!
Glad to hear you’re reading the imager portfolio!!! It’s one of my favorite series, and I love how the different time periods affect each other. The other series I mention a lot is the grand illusion. It’s a series that’s currently coming out (third book coming this august???) and it’s honestly pretty similar to the first three imager books except the magic system is totally different and it’s more politics heavy. Would recommend!
If I had a nickel for every time Modesitt killed off a mentor figure in a building explosion I’d have two nickels, which isn’t much but it’s weird that it’s happened twice
He’s a 10 but he puts quince paste on his croissants
I apologize in advance for the person I will become on August 9th when Councilor comes out
For an unknown, adequately written series, The Imager Portfolio managed to present the single most realistic and powerful religion I’ve ever fucking seen in fiction, the in-text homilies given by the characters are actually relevant to real life and genuinely thought-provoking. I literally get emotional thinking about how well done this series’ worldbuilding was. This motherfucker is on Orson Scott Card’s level, the difference is just that no one knows this guy exists.
