Cain; prince of Elv. Brigadier General.
If everyone had a story to tell, and a sadness to express, do you think I have the time to listen to all of them?
His words should have elicited more fear in her than the one she felt at that moment. Upon hearing them, she should have made a run for it, called for help from his siblings or the nearest Suryan guard, sent word to her brother that she was being threatened by the enemy and all together flee from his side but instead, she remained seated. Words of violence no longer had an effect on her, not when she heard on an almost daily basis from the queen and experienced it firsthand from her Aeron. âIâm sure you would, your highness.â She agreed with another sip to her wine, an action much to calm for someone being threatened. âBut I donât think youâre willing to compromise Elv just for someone like me.âÂ
cain found her attitude unsettling. he wanted the trusting girl, the one who was easy to bruise, the one he locked in the closet. he wanted her back. wanted her here, afraid of him, reeling from the experience of her childhood that he never quite got to replicate with her again. maybe he should push her into a bigger cage, a place where she could not truly escape. at this point, he doubted that any elvan would mind him locking up another suryan princess. âwell, now, thatâs a big gamble youâre taking, lady dragonborn.â he smiled into his cup, and put it down as he finished taking another drink. âthere are more ways to break people, you know. i wonder if surya would even take you back if i...defile you before youâre married off to someone i donât approve of?â

Up close, the closet looked much too big and extremely imposing. She wondered if it was even safe to be near such a thing but, more than anything else, she trusted the water prince and believed in his words with innocent earnest. Surely, he wouldnât lead her to harm, right? âAlrightâŠâ Biting her lip, she stepped forward and stood in front of the colossal piece, her hand reaching for the doorknob.Â
he stepped aside, allowed her to open the closet. he even poked her side, playfully, letting a little bit of his impatience show. he wanted her in there, wanted to hear how wonderful it sounded to have his friend beg for help. the thought was enough to feed his smile, keep it on his face for just a little bit longer. âcâmon, âkari. step inside and push at the back of the closet! itâs really a hidden door, i swear!â
âyouâre excited,â he stated quietly, as if this was any more surprising than the fact that she had come here of her own volition. perhaps she wanted him as much as he did (at the moment), perhaps wanted him as much as she said she did. maybe she was really telling the truth. but for now he took a step back, kept his palms on her waist and admired every part of her that he could lay his eyes on. âturn around.â
and finally, he kissed her, already knowing the answer heâs heard plenty of times before. they both know that it isnât true, but cain lets himself believe it -- the only lie he lets himself believe, anyway. and his kiss is nothing short of desperate, of rough, tongue pushing past her lips and sliding across her own as his hands teases her in every which way he remembers that she likes.
His orders surprised her greatly. Formality was normal to her as was the act of breathing yet here he was, a prince of great stature and lineage, asking her to call him by his name. Friends? Hikari was not sure if their relationship could already merit such a title for she never had any to begin with. âAlright.â She nodded, biting her lip. ââŠCainâ  Given no time at all to dwell on the progress of their supposed companionship, she followed his line of sight until it landed onto the key held by his fingers. She weighed her options then; remembering the queenâs strict orders that she was never to play for she did not deserve to be experience such joys but she could not say no. âI suppose there would be no harm in it.â
he waved his hand dismissively, not at her agreement but towards her attitude. it was too uptight for him -- she needed to have a bit of fun! like he was, although his definition of fun might not exactly be her own. happily enough, he opened the closet, and peered inside it, and whistled in appreciation before closing it, preventing her from seeing any further. âladies first?â

She winced at his profanity and the automatic response was for her to expect a blow but, thankfully, it never came. Mockery was obvious in his voice and it was only the fact that no one else was hearing their conversation that brought her salvation from her embarrassment. How was she supposed to make him understand the traumas of her past without causing even more shame for herself?
Her lips curved up slightly then and there was an indescribable look that crossed her eyes as she took a sip of her wine. âYouâll be surprised, your majesty.â was her simple reply, obviously not wanting to elaborate any further and simply letting him make sense of her weighted words. It was the first time that night that she felt the desire to truly free herself from his presence but she knew that she must try hard to not let him notice the slip in her mood. âThe queen has been busying herself with having me meet as many suitors as possible but I would really much rather read than anything else.â
out here, he wouldnât express any sort of physical violence. she was lucky that they hadnât met in the hallways, alone. he might have even shown her just how much he had missed her. maybe even left a message to give to her sister; the bitch did leave a mark on him, after all.
cain wasnât fazed by her answer, though it made him frown a little, made him hold onto his drink a little tighter. but he let it go; she was suryan, and out of all of them, there was probably only one that he wanted to spare when the coalition won the war that they started. âin times of war? suryans really are shameless, arenât they?â he finished his drink, called for another one. âfirst you start this mess, then go on to shrink into your own political bubbles. your kind disgust me. if we werenât surrounded by so many people,â he paused, and tapped the side of his boot, âi wouldâve slit your throat here and now.â
âyouâre warm,â he observed quietly, astutely so, a hand travelling to the side of her neck. his thumb grazed along her pulse; itâs racing as much as his own. this was desire, pure and simple, and if she thought that he would feel anything else, she was sorely mistaken. it wasnât that he didnât want to -- it was that he couldnât.·âwhat alternatives?â he continued to question, his grip around her neck tightening slightly, despite the pleased smile upon his features.· his other hand traversed the length of her body, crept up under the fabric pooling at her hips and beginning to massage her inner thigh. âany of them as good as i am, you think?â
âa little too excited, are you, my lady?â cain was merciless with his teasing, with the way his lips quirked upwards when his hands left her throat and the pads of his fingers ran along the delicate curves of her skin, settling on her breasts as his eyes met her own. they were soft -- as was the rest of her -- against his work-roughened skin. the contrast almost made him shudder. he hadnât touched her in so long that his very being ached from it. âhowever did you survive without me?â
âOf course, your highness.â The mention of books had all her defenses crumbling and her eyes mirrored the same excited the filled his voice if not even more so. She paid no attention to the way the door clicked shut with a sense of finality that was sure to keep the two of them away from everyone else. She especially paid no attention to the way the light seemed to not reach the corner where the books were supposedly place but then again, Hikari had always been a little too trusting and that was the reason why she got into trouble most of the time. âWhere should I read to you, your highness?â She called out, still walking deeper into the labyrinth of bookshelves.Â
âstop calling me âyour highnessâ!â he told her in the lightest tone he could muster. even kept smiling, the stars bless him. âweâre friends now. call me cain!â his steps were light, and his hands found the pockets of his trousers, where his fingers played with the small key within it. the metal was twirled between his deft digits as he continued forward, pretending to look anyway but the place where he intended to lead her into. for fun! âkeep going, i think itâs further down that way -- ah! that wardrobe over there, do you see? i hear it leads to a secret room!â he took the key out of his pocket, then, and raised it with a jovial grin. âwanna go explore?â
It was increasingly getting harder to remind herself of the truth of who he was when he was smiling at her like this and making her feel so at ease by his side. How they were now could have easily fooled anyone into believing that they were two good friends who only memories of their childhood adventures keeping them company after the war begun. She almost believed it too.Â
âI would not want to bore you with any of them, your highness.â Formality was normal on her tongue but there were many answers to his question that lingered in her mouth. She reminded herself that he was undeserving to know of such intimate details about herself for it would be something he was surely going to use against her; she had to be careful for nothing could protect her in Elv. âHave I? I believe my sisters are far more blessed in that realm, your highness.âÂ
it was easy to pretend, especially when it was all he was made to do in court. such was the life of a blue blood. in elv, it was perhaps easier to pretend to be strong and intimidating -- but cain thought that too obvious a farce. he would rather have people think he wasnât much of a threat before he strangled them, destroyed them, and reassured them that, truly, he was not that much of a threat. it was more fun that way.
âi asked, didnât i? i wouldnât waste my breath asking a question i donât expect an answer to.â he took a sip of his drink, and sighed happily, as if he was truly glad to be reunited with her again. in a way, he was, but with the war, he wasnât allowed to hurt her as she wished if he wanted to keep being civil, if he wanted to give the impression that they were truly better than surya. ânow, who would lie to you about that? ah, lady dragonborn -- donât tell me you actually believe that bullshit?â

{ ` another step, and the distance between them would be unbearable. cain suppresses a visible reaction that demands itself be known from the electricity running along his spine. something in him also wants to cower, to put his trousers back on. but his form is too red, too flushed with something he cannot yet understand. his hand leaves him for a moment, and the sheer amount of bare skin exposed to salty air is enough to make him swallow his own desires thickly. the prince, usually so controlling of himself, cannot seem to help the pleasure that urges him to attend to it, cannot help the way itâs screaming through a gaze aimed at the other male }Â
iâm... { ` his voice peters off and his field of vision travels downwards, all embarrassed awkward teen with shoulders too wide and bony and limbs that show promise of muscle from all the rough work in the navy. the cut on his chest remains unnoticed, still } iâm -- fixing my problem. { ` a smile appears, then, shy but smug in all the ways that it shouldnât be } seems like you have one too, my friend. you know how to fix it too, donât you?
Nam Sibyllam quidem Cumis ego ipse oculis meis vidi
(Â I saw with my own eyes the Sibyl at Cumae hanging
in a cage, and when the boys said to her:
âSibyl, what do you want?â she answered: âI want to die.â )
the past few weeks havenât been the best â not that anything is desirable in war apart from victory â in terms of his schedule. holding down the fort at one of the islands outside elv hadnât been too hard. neither was helping the troops clear out of the land near the outskirts of tempestade before the opposing sides engaged in a prolonged skirmish that lasted a few days (three days, ten hours and fifteen minutes, if cain was being exact, but who was keeping count?).
it was the pirates that irked him the most, fighting battles they could not win, and pushing him into making his fleet stay at sea just to fend them off. they bred like cockroaches, anyway.
and it was after a particularly refreshing meal that a messenger knocked upon the door, and proceeded to deliver news that made him stab the poor desk heâd been eating on.
âexcuse me?â
âcaptain nam heeyeon, sire. she was killed in action, after having eliminated most of the enemy â,â
          killed.
before the poor boy could finish the message, cain was already on his feet, grabbing the scabbard that remained among other choice weapons behind him. âwho did it?â
âsuryans, your highness. they were reported to have sailed north, towards elv. they were spotted about thirty clicks east of our location.â
          killed.Â
                    they killed his favourite â
âget a smaller ship ready for me. call scott â the colonel is in charge for now until i get back,â cain instructed â more like snapped, scabbard sheathed at his hip and his glasses removed, placed neatly inside the drawer at his desk. it was easy enough to locate his jacket despite the sudden blurred vision, after having lived with it for so long. âNOW.â
ây-yes! yes, sire.â
only when the boy was gone did grief crush him entirely. once the door closed his palms fell against the wood, arms shaky as cain felt his chest cave in completely. the finality of death wasnât lost to him; the finality of loss was something new, something foreign, something unwanted. cain had never lost something so precious to death â never lost it while never having hope, elusive and fantastical as it was, that someone precious could come back to him again. his throat and his eyes ached, and only when tears fell warm and heavy onto the marred surface did he realise he was crying. cainâs jaw was set, teeth locked in an effort to keep the grievous cry trapped within it at bay.
and there lay the uncertainty, the hopelessness, the loss of something heâd come to accept as normal, as routine.
for once in his score-and-a-yearâs worth of existence, cain felt something like what others would call sadness â and he hated every second of it.
cain quickly inhaled, and wiped the tears away, and by the time his orders were accomplished did he set out with his hands aching for blood.
the operation was relatively easy when their opponent was just another ship.
they were spotted quickly, but all too late: cain already had a wave crashing against them, bigger than them, bigger than anything, blocking out the light of the full moon for a moment before trickling into the brig, into the hold, and freezing at his command. the weapons were worthless. it was easier, then, to kill suryans locked in ice.
âkill them all.â cainâs voice was unforgiving. the suryans struggled as the enemy crew boarded their ship, but all worthless squirming. these bits of scum, flotsam and jetsam all in one disgusting heap tainting the elvan seas âÂ
âand make sure theyâre dead. twice.â
ice melted where he walked, and cain walked with purpose, the door to the bridge frozen enough so that he could kick it open.
âdonât,â he began, arms and hands already in the air, the blood in the captainâs veins held captive by invisible strings, âtry.â
cain paused in mock thought as he continued forward, forced the other maleâs wrists onto the floor. âor do. please do.â so i can hurt you more. so i can hear you s c r e a m. âdo you know what youâve taken from me?â
the other male only glowered at him. perfect. now cain could twist his legs. and his arms. the bones cracked along with the steady rocking of the ship atop the ocean. how horribly foolish, to infuriate him in his domain. his hands dropped; so did the captain onto the floor, neck exposed and ready for cain to step on.
âyou took her from me.â the other male writhed, attempted to lift his arms but could not. âand iâm going to make you suffer.â
in a ship, rope was easy to find. and infuriated, cain was a much more formidable opponent. people often thought the sea beautiful; cain had a temper that could rival the deep blues, had a storm already brewing in his chest, spitting thunder and lightning with every rough handling of the man who could barely use his limbs.
the crew said nothing of the bound prisoner.
tonight, their lullabies would be the agonies of a dying man, and cain, the deathly conductor of another gruesome masterpiece.
The fear had now settled into a dull throb at the back of her mind that she could almost ignore it if she tried hard enoughâ which she did. It was almost incomprehensible how someone like him, who possessed the touch and smile of an angel, could do anything to harm her. When she caught herself thinking about it, she felt instantaneously guiltyâ not everyone was like Aeron, she reminded herself. She lowered all her guard down and simply followed him as he pulled her along. âYes, your highness. Make-believe stuff like princes saving princesses and fighting dragons and the like.â The room, as he had promised, was brimming with books and the excitement she felt was obvious in the way her face lit up when she entered the room. âOf course, I would be happy to read for the prince of Elv.âÂ
there, again: she trusted him so easily as to entire the room so readily. in the corner was a closet; placed there, he was told, because there was no other place for such a thing, and perhaps could be used for clean parchment that could be used, and other supplies that would be readily at hand if one chose to work in the library. the concept of work didnât quite appeal to him just yet, and besides, the closet made for a good hiding place while it was empty. not many people went here at all. and, earlier, heâd acquired the keys to open the damn thing, too, only to find that it was empty, and without the treasures his innocent mind had imagined. âreally?â he sounded excited -- fake and phoney. âi know some books over there by the corner that seem like a lot of fun! can you read those for me?â
[Â â the ship had had a run-in with pirates fresh off the bat when theyâd parted from port and into the open sea. the boys, valeri and cain had fought alongside their comrades. as quartermaster, valeri had helped maintain the troops onboard organized and effective against the enemy invasion while the captain kept the rest of the crew and the ship sailing. at the end of the hour, the pirates had been defeated, and their ship was captured. the resolution had come so quickly after such an intense battle, valeri found himself at a loss once theyâd won. his eyes scanned the starboard and port deck of the ship but cain was nowhere in sight. after setting out some orders to the crew with the captainâs guidance, valeri found a chance to slip away within the ship to find cain, who seemed to have dashed from the battle once it was over with desperation. had he been hurt? ]Â
the sickbay.. he must be there if heâs gotten himself hurt. Â [Â â the doltâ it would be just like cain not to let anyone know he was wounded and instead try to take care of it himself below at the sickbay. valeri rushed there, not thinking twice as he open the door, bursting in as he slammed it behind him ]Â
cain! if youâre hurt you should let your superiors know at o nâ- [ â he stopped short, eyes widening as he realized the only wound on cain was a small bloody nick on his chest, and that the reason he could see it was because cain was nearly completely undressed with his trousers at his knees as he sat on one of the beds. he looked positively disheveled. the sight stirred something in valeriâ something which made him tense up and turn his face away as if heâd walked in on something intimate. as far as he understood intimacy required a man and woman. valeriâs eyes scanned the room for a woman ] youâre.. alone [Â â he was very confused ]Â
{ ` gingerly, with the awkwardness of teenage curiosity, his fingers wrap around the organ between his legs. it makes him shudder, at first; power remains surging through his veins, still. cain licks his lips, curious, thinks that he should probably get this problem over and done with. his shirt becomes bothersome â he gets rid of it. his trousers, too â although heâs not so patient as to take them off entirely. the sight of blood makes the half-hard length in his palm grow even harder, and a small, delirious laugh slips out of his lips. he forgets to listen }
{ ` when the voice arrives he looks up, afraid that itâs someone heâs not too familiar with, or someone he trusts at all. but itâs only valeri. cainâs cheeks colour something close to the shade of red dripping down his torso } y-yes, i am. { ` he ignores how his voice shakes, yet doesnât take his hand off of himself like itâs the most casual thing in the world, although having someone walk in on him has his heart thudding in embarrassment and confusion and something else he doesnât want to put a name to just yet } what? itâs not like iâmâŠdoing anything wrong.

the war has only made cain appreciate elvan court even more -- despite and for all its horrible flaws. ( cain will fix those later, when heâs in power, when heâs the one sitting at the throne and calling all the shots and having everyone but a select few cowering at his feet and kissing the very ground he walks. ) for now he enjoys it, and the wine. the liquor is definitely so much better here than it is anywhere else on the field, or on the sea. rum is his go-to drink of choice when he has time, but he doesnât get intoxicated all too much, which defeats the purpose a little.
and it is with high quality wine that he enjoys himself with, and wine that he finds himself running out of. instead of sending for a maid he walks to...wherever all the wine is stored. a pantry, of some sort, and a special room there, from what heâs gathered through intimidating the passing servants. directions are all he needs -- though his eyesight is blurry.
itâs not surprising that he runs into someone and has wine spilling all over his front, tainting the brilliant blue with darker red. not really all that surprising, either, when he makes out the basic features of the maleâs face, and a frown immediately forms on his own. âjinyoung -- is this how you greet your brother? i didnât know youâd grown so disrespectful.â
itâs easier to fight in the water â his element, his greatest weapon and his greatest shield. itâs foolish for the suryans to fight him here, and perhaps that is why he finds himself on land. itâs on one of the small islands apart from the mainland where theyâre stationed for a month or two â his time in court had been too short. he quite liked it, too. at least the food was carefully prepared.
itâs the little things that irk him.
âdamn fucking suryans,â he mumbles, sheathing the blade at his hip, the stone heâd used to sharpen it being covered so carefully with cloth and placed under the makeshift table heâs sitting at. Â âcanât let a man finish taking care of his shit. i could just kill them for it.â his statement, meant as a form of jest, is met with silence. it doesnât faze him; not many people had his sense of humour. then again, he hadnât been entirely kidding. âhow many were sighted?â
âa battalion. maybe less, ten clicks north.â
he removes the spectacles from his face then. while everything else is suddenly blurry, his decisions are not. cain decides that waiting for scott to come back from leading her own scouting party wonât do any good. action is vital in winning a war. besides, cain doesnât believe in staying still; he isnât going to be his brother. and if scott isnât the one reporting this to him, there must be a reason. had she been held up somehow? caught in some little skirmish?
âweâll meet our scouting party halfway, then chase the bastards away. and while weâre gone, i expect everyone to be on guard. no one is allowed to sleep until i get back,â cain announces, already standing up and adjusting his armour. âgive me ten of your angriest men, and ten of your fastest. the new ones looking for blood to spill, and the ones who look like they canât take me on in an actual fight.â and more silence. honestly, scott is a better conversationalist than this. doesnât hold her tongue, that girl. âwhat?â
âjust twentyâŠsir?â
ah â the guy must be new.
cain is given a new round of newly-promoted dumb fucks every mission that, at this point, heâs learnt how to be the slightest bit patient. they must have heard of him by now, must know his reputation one way or another. maybe thatâs why heâs given the task of helping them with their discipline issues. heâs never quite lost a battle either â not entirely, at least. thatâs what he likes to think, anyway. most of it, he blames on his damn eyesight; itâs a miracle heâs even gotten this far, but he isnât complaining.
âlet me tell you something you might have forgotten, corporal,â he says, tone perfectly stable as he stands before the lower-ranked officer. âi was like you a few years back. i understand your concerns. but you gotta understand â iâm your superior for a reason. now, on the off-chance that i donât come back, feel free to promote yourself. otherwise, you better learn how to fucking listen.â
his hand rested at the hilt of his blade, gaze cutting straight through the male, all with the iciness of an elvan winter. he isnât feared without a reason. cain smiles though the expression canât seem to thaw the coldness of his gaze.
âget me those men. donât make me say it again.â
âs-sir.â heâs given a salute, and the officer ducks out of the tent with his tail between his legs. cain likes it when they do that â their fear is always so amusing. itâs not like he actually does anything to severely harm the soldiers (and seamen, if heâs lucky) under his command. just a little beating will do.
and there is a reason for the small amount of men heâs taken with him. itâs faster to move that way, less people to worry about, and less people to lose. there are weapons and supplies in their little encampment, and the economy doesnât do wonders for the amount of rations they receive. cain will not allow it to be seized, if the enemy seeks to distract them with their little hunting party. suryans are smart little bastards.
the angriest men will go with him. the other half will be tasked to poison the sources of water they find that isnât within half a mile radius of their camp â and this needs to be done quickly, lest the enemy catch them in the act. who knows how many of them there are? soon enough, however, he knows that this will matter very little.
