• Carew was born on the run. Right on the brink of a lovers quarrel that to this day he still doesn’t have all the details of. He remembered in his first few years of life, living in a small apartment with his mom who worked most nights. The yellowed paint flaking on the walls, and the smell of cigarettes etched into the walls of each room. His mom would be coming home from work when he would get up for school, and she’d be asleep or leaving when he got home. It wasn’t all bad. He’d managed to make a few friends. He was particularly close with a small group from his class and would often have them over to keep him company. All was as normal as it could be until the day, he came home to his mother frantically packing. Her voice in a panic as she told him to grab whatever the hell he could grab. He didn’t even have time to ask about the two black eyes before she was throwing him into the car and taking off towards the airport.
• He was promised their sudden departure came with the promise of a better life. Though he had a hard time imagining what that looked like. And an even harder time when she told him that another life came with a man named Evan who lived out in America. It didn’t matter that he was nicely dressed and came with a big fancy house. There was something about him that grated at Rew’s nerves just below the surface. A feeling he worked tirelessly to bury for the sake of his moms happiness.
• And to his surprise, things stayed in the clear for as long as time would allow. His mom was no longer working the same late nights. Evan wasn’t home nearly enough for Carew to feel like he really needed to build a relationship with him and once again they were happy. At his new school, Rew found himself getting involved once again with the rowdy bunch that introduced him to the wondrous world of parties, drugs, and a multitude of other ways to get his adrenaline racing. Something that was easy enough to get away with in a house the size of his own. He’d found himself getting in the habit of finding ways to chase that adrenaline high and eventually went so far that he’d been caught by Evan, turning the man’s salt water tank into a gravity bong. He believed without a shadow of a doubt that the man was going to get him into trouble and was shocked when instead he offered to join him. It was the closest thing to bonding with a father figure, Carew had ever had in his 16 years of life. He enjoyed it so much that he got in the habit of inviting him back. He’d let the older man know any time he and his friends were getting high and felt prideful of the strange little secret they were hiding from his mom.
• On his seventeenth birthday things took a turn for just a little bit weird. For his birthday, Evan got him his first 8 ball of cocaine and taught him how to hit his first line. He opened a door of exploration that Carew couldn’t have possibly expected. A few months later, the man brought home his first bag of mushrooms, which turned into pills, which turned into acid, which finally turned into Rew’s mom finding out. The expression on her face when she found her 17 year old son, thinking he was floating through space with her husband in the shed outback was priceless. Once again, Carew was convinced the fun would be forced to come to an end… until it didn’t. What had started as a stint of teenage rebellion turned into a family activity. His mother surprised him in her knowledge and tolerance for the laundry list of drugs Evan was able to procure for them. What could possibly go wrong right?
• Cue Evan losing his job. You mean going in to perform a surgery while blitzed on cocaine is a bad idea? Apparently the board thought so, and his reaction was where things started to go down hill. Evan was pissed when they let him go. Pissed that he’d let himself stoop to the level of a 17 year old kid and get caught like some frat boy with his hands down his pants at the library. As many substances as they’d gotten into, when combined with alcohol, created a monster no one could have seen coming. The night he lost his job, Evan came home and taunted Carew for hours on end until the boy snapped. Things got physical after only about an hour and they only spiraled from there. Without his work, Evan had more than enough free time to delve into harder and harder drugs and with them, came more and more delusional thinking. What had once been a safe haven, was now hell.
• The beatings snowballed into torture when Carew learned what would happen when he’d fight back. The good stuff. The kind of things you don’t forget no matter how far from it you get. If Carew wanted any hope of going a night without Evan putting his hands on him, it meant finding a park bench to rest his head. Following Evan’s deep dive into madness, Carew made the decision to turn a new leaf in his priorities. School became both his obsession and his safe place. He took to books where drugs had once been his vice in hope of academics being what would get him out of his hellish situation. Carew withdrew quickly from anyone he knew in person, and found solace instead in solitude.
• It was actually with support from his guidance counselor, that a young Carew developed a plan. A plan that was not only going to get him out of that house, but take him somewhere he believed would make him better than the life he’d been living. The day he got his acceptance letter to Ogden College had been the proudest his mom had ever been. It was the start of a several year plan he’d prepped for himself to take back all the years that had been taken from him.
Wanted Plots/Connections:
Ep. 1: Friends- And I wish we could have stayed friends. When our never meant to be relationship ended. All this life we’ve lived and now we’re strangers again. This is your typical ex girlfriend connection. This could go one of many ways. He broke up with her. She broke up with him. Toxic ex’s. Whichev you know?
Ep. 2: Pair- We’ve grown, wе’ve changed for the better. I’m on your side even when we’re not together. I’m always here for you, I know you’re always there for me. Even if we’re not the pair we used to be. This is the friendship connection. Carew has a really bad habit of pulling away from people he used to be close with. So gimme some friends that maybe he’d once in a blue moon let his guard down around, but things just aren’t the same anymore.
Ep. 3: Important- I'm not important and neither are you. So let's do whatever we wanna do. Bask in our cosmic insignificance. Soak up this blip we're living in. Similar to pair but these are the few and far between that Carew has not totally cut off. Someone like minded who feels as on the outside of it all as he does. They bond in their unimportance to the social hierarchy of Ogden.
Ep. 4: Hating Stuff- Hating stuff. Focused on the way life sucks. Thеre’s an awful lot to love. Think I’ve had enough. Hating stuff. This is always one of my favorite connections. It’s those few people Carew hangs out with that either hate the same people he hates. Or hates a class together, and they bond over their dislike of various things.
Ep. 5: Passenger Seat- And I've got all that I need. Right here in the passenger seat. Oh, and I can't keep my eyes on the road. Knowing that she's inches from me. I have always loved the, sit in the car, talk about anything, drive around late at night kind of friendships. The bond over playlists, but have also had their fair share of broken down at the side of the road, camped out in the back of the car moments.
Ep. 6: Casual- This wasn’t the deal I’m aware. But I had to get this out of me. I don’t know how to be. Casual. Y’all know what this is. The casual hook up. *hades voice* He’s a GUY. And he’s not above the wonders of casual sex even though he’d like to think he is.
