They want to purchase (with time or money) the feeling of helping. To a lot of people, charity is consumption. You’re purchasing personal virtue or expressing your own opinions by choosing what to support or not support. The (subconscious) goal is not to help as many children as possible, the goal is to purchase the feeling of being the one that did the helping, and taxes don’t give people that feeling like a fundraising event does.

Can everyone just learn to aspire to this???

The most inconvenient truth is that men do misogyny because they get something from it. They get labor from intimate partners, they get social capital in their public circles, they get the benefit of the doubt, they get default respect and promotions and people listening to them and people afraid of them.

I am begging people to become aware of power dynamics in society. This same reality exists for all forms of prejudice and oppression. If you want to be less racist, misogynistic, less xenophobic or less of a white supremacist, you have to give up some of your privilege or at least be willing to…
