10000 YEAR OLD ROCK ART OF GIRAFFES FOUND IN LIBYA LET'S GO
YES!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
of note: 95% of libya is desert, and giraffes are not found there! but this predates not just the libyan desert, but the entire sahara desert it's a part of! giraffes aren't found there any more and this is a memory of a time when things were giraffier
also apparently this rock art dates across multiple periods spanning thousands of years? but i couldn't find much detail on that so i can't give specifics
but yeah, this isn't just a memory of giraffes, but of giraffes now absent encountered by people just 2000 years (the difference between the late roman republic and today) out of the ice age, in a climate unfamiliar to any of the hundred billion people born since the desertification of the sahara drove the ancient egyptians to the nile, near the start of the agricultural revolution
the time between this and the birth of the sahara was nearly as long as the time between the birth of the sahara and now, in which all recorded history is contained, and all languages we can recognise at all - the language and culture of these people would be totally alien to current libyans, twice the difference between the oldest european language and english, predating all but libya's mountains!
and we have pictures of giraffes of the time! what a beautiful gift from such a distant past

It’s funny but incredibly telling how entitled/ignorant/insensitive some of these people are… idk if it’s an education gap or purposeful ignorance.
The really bewildering thing to me is that I remember when you needed to get up and pull a dictionary off the shelf, or visit a library to look up the facts you needed. Now people have all kinds of information literally at their fingertips and they can’t be bothered to use it.
Oh dear gods, it’s gotten worse

This hits different when combined with that “Americans don’t learn other countries exist till they’re in 5th Grade” post from the other day.
Demily recently got another one lads
Also, I love that, in the sign language one, it seems like the last image might’ve been a gif of “fuck you,” screenshot at the perfect time to let you know they were about to sign “fuck you”
As a romanian person I gotta add this one too
This is my favourite post on this website
I have literally had people tell me that I’m a gross appropriator for learning sign language while not deaf.
I sometimes cannot speak, but leaving that aside, what the FUCK lol
I still remember the guy who got mad at me because I spoke about the cultural role of the Norse gods in my life and my culture and insisted that I should be “proud of my Christian heritage instead” and quite simply would not believe me when I told him I was from Scandinavia because “that doesn’t exist anymore.”
someone please edit that map of europe with the spain void to also have a void for the whole of scandinavia
Every now and then I just have to reblog this.
(while particularly loving: “Gender of the Day: Wales”)
(also “Port O’Rico”)
And people wonder why I sometimes feel the desire to whap some people with a pool noodle until their brains re-engage.
so women are supposed to grin and bear the books, the comics, the movies, the plays, the tv shows, the stories, the sci-fi, the translated ancient poems, the fucking millennia of men writing about their self inserts torturing women and it being declared as High Art by other men, we’re supposed to read it in our free time, study it in classrooms, include their styles in our own writing, accept their cultural influence as natural, watch it in the cinema, write about it, talk about it, accept it, aspire it, but men can’t tolerate three seconds of female wish fulfilment of a woman snapping the wrist of a creep without feeling personally kicked in the balls.
This reminds me of something I observed in college while I was doing my honors thesis on women in modern horror films. I watched a LOT of horror during that time as part of my research, and sometimes that was done with my family around.
And my dad and brothers? Were deeply disturbed by the movie Jennifer’s Body. I was flabbergasted. It’s not scary! It’s not even that gory. But they were horrified by it. These men who grew up on 70s slashers were legitimately shook by 90 minutes of Megan Fox eating a few teenage boys, mostly off-screen.
Similarly, my all-male reading panel for my thesis? Were so disturbed by my synopsis of the film Teeth that they couldn’t even talk about it. One of them said he couldn’t look at his wife for a week after reading it.
Again, grown-ass men who study and teach media for a living. Who definitely watch and enjoy horror movies. One of whom was a huge Tarantino buff. We watched and read worse in his intro to mass media class! But one movie about a girl whose vag could bite was enough to haunt him.
Then of course you have things like the Gone Girl backlash–men yelling that Amy Dunne is evil and women clamoring to assure everyone that they know she is not someone to emulate–the backlash against Carol Danvers, and, more recently, the griping from MRAs against the upcoming film Hustlers, which is about strippers scamming their Wall Street clients.
My conclusion? Most men–at least most straight, cisgender men, who are both my sample population and most of the ones whining that Carol is a “villain”–are perfectly fine with, and desensitized to, media where men do violence to women (horror movies), or men do violence to men (horror and action movies). They’re even sort of fine when women do violence to women (“ooooo cat fight!”).
But they get intensely uncomfortable when women are depicted doing any kind of violence to men, especially in films that tilt the balance of power to the other side of the m/f gender binary beyond a single moment or scene.
So woman as flesh-eating monster with men as her preferred cuisine? Woman who responds to unwanted sexual contact by biting it off? Woman who frames her cheating husband for murder? Woman whose response to harassment–behavior that many of the loudest whiners know is both creepy and reflective of their own thoughts/actions–is to break something?
Too scary. Unacceptable. Disturbing. These men hate being presented with the idea, even in fiction, that their position of power is socially constructed, that it could easily be flipped the other way. It terrifies them.
In feeling that terror, they experience a tiny modicum of what living, existing, moving, being perceived as a woman in the world is like.
And they flinch every time.
Here have a newspaper comic from 1993
Does anyone here knows the "Rivers of London" series? I think it was in "Moon over Soho" were the Pale lady killed/attacked men with her Vagina dentata in a side case (the main case were a group of psychic vampires who drained/killed people via jazz music).
In Maori folk tales Maui meets his end when he tries to sneak into the vagina of the goddess of night and death because she wakes and smashes him into tiny bits with her obsidian vagina teeth. He was a worm at the time (it makes sense in context)
Unfun turn to the real world: There is a medical condition called dermoid cysts, that can occur in the vagina, but those cysts are more like bumps and not teeth-like, but still, medical precedent.
There is also the Rape-Axe anti-rape condom that was once developed, but I've heard nothing about it since 2009. It was a real live uterine condom with plastic teeth that was meant to protect women from being raped. Which I thought was better than the first idea... which was a tampon with a spring loaded knife.
Hannibal wasn’t SA’d in book + movie canon and I doubt it would be made up for the show. It’s also really weird to speculate while sounding like it’s gossip.
Why would that sound anything like gossip??? Wtf. Why, when talking about SA, the first thing that comes to your mind is that it might be gossip?
For me, it's something I have to think about. I've analyzed Hannibal over and over and I feel like there's something that he has never told anyone about his childhood, not even Chiyoh. I theorized about what could that something be.
Those soldiers were willing to eat him. They ate Mischa. Rape is usually a power trip and/or a sadistic breakout. Aren't those soldiers the type? Yes they are.
Also, even if it's not canon, headcanons and AUs exist???
Not sure what anon meant tbh-
Personally, i think the concept has great angst/whump potential!!! Probably some good hurt/comfort as well
well I FOR ONE LOVE this headcanon and i also see it as a real possibility that it could be canon. it also makes his character so rich and complex. as a survivor, big fan of using headcanons of our favorite characters being survivors as a coping mechanism!!!!<3
Thank you guys for a moment I thought I was wrong for thinking about it 😭
And I agree with @willgrahamforever about being a survivor, because I lived throught it too. And I swear, after having studied these things (I study political science and criminology) it's VERY COMMON that soldiers rape children and women in war. It's weird when they don't, unfortunately. I would bet there's a 80% chance those soldiers raped little Hannibal. At least one of them did, and maybe they did it to Mischa too. We have no way of knowing, but we know the statistics.
You know it would cruelly make more sense if the timeline went from rape to eating, as in Mischa was raped, Mischa died because her body was already in a bad shape and suddenly they had a corpse at hand. So now the decision what to do with said corpse was a simple one in the eyes of these soldiers, because the girl itself stopped existing the moment she died.
In many real world documented cases of cannibalism you will find that they ate the dead first, the ones they didn't have to kill themselves. The greatest barrier was the fact that to eat a human, you normally have to kill a human first. If there is a fresh corpse, suddenly a lot of the reasons not to practice cannibalism go away, especially if starving.
Back to the book/TV series and back to the soldiers. Specifically Soviet soldiers (which because time is moving on feels a bit strange) were often protected by the state. You were a soldier, so the state took care of you and crimes you did while being a soldier did not exist (unless said crimes harmed the state). Which of course means rape of civilians, of children, never happened in the eyes of the state. And because the soldiers knew that, they did it. Which leads neatly into questioning if Hannibal wasn't groomed to become a revenge-killer for his sister, because there was no way for Hannibal or his surviving family to get justice via legal means. They wanted justice, they had to take it into their own hands.
hey. is swallowing come cannibalism
yes
no
follow up poll
is consuming period blood cannibalism
yes
no
anyway actually this post is cancelled because, after searching the definition of cannibalism, it only refers to consuming the flesh of the same species. therefore, no to come, and no to period blood but ONLY if you don't eat the chunky bits
Well, that depends on how widely you cast the definition of cannibalism. Consuming the flesh can be interpreted in different ways, but most interpretations would exclude the brain, which is not often eaten in most western societies, but was explicitly mentioned in a form of funerary cannibalism, because consuming it caused the spread of Kuru, a prion disease similar to Creutzfeldt-Jakob. So if we say cannibalism is consuming parts of ones own species that we need to live, that would include the brain and blood. On the other hand, period blood is something the body expels on its own, no one sticks a knife into you to get it (even though it can feel like someone is scraping your uterus with a rusty knife). So if we just talk blood, that could be interpreted as cannibalism, but period blood is not.
Semen on the other hand is not something you need to survive. Important for the survival of the species, but you would not die if your balls were to shrivel up. You loose your blood though and well that's it.
Fun fact: there are some people that advocate for the consumption of the placenta. And that is a far more interesting question. Would that count as cannibalism?

Correction: Frankenstein was studying to become a Doctor, but he did not finish his degree. He's just a failed Med student.
I have to write a paper on the ethics of cannibalism (for my bioethics class).
Can you give me fun facts about it, historical exemples, medical concerns, etc???
So if you have a group of starving people and you choose to kill and eat one of them to survive, that person has been starving alongside of you and therefore has used up quite a bit of their own nutrients. You might have one person less to feed, but the flesh you gain is poor of nutrients.
There is a movie based on a true story about a plane crash in the Andens where the survivors decide to consume the flesh of those that died in the crash.
There are multiple cases of cannibalism at sea, one who spawned the famous book Moby Dick and one that was weird because Edgar Allan Poe wrote a book and then the incident happened and the cabin boy they killed and eat had the same name as the victim in the book.
That was actually the case that put an end to cannibalism at sea because the court decided that killing the cabin boy was murder and doing it to survive was no excuse. So they were sentenced to death but because of errors in the process Queen Victoria decided to use her royal prerogative of mercy. The court had withheld the option of manslaughter from the jury and thus they were given 6 months in prison and then were released. But yeah, that was officially the last case of cannibalism at sea.
Fun fact: Placentophagy, the act of eating human placenta also counts as cannibalism. It doesn't have the same moral stigma as other forms, but people are still arguing about possible health risks and/or benefits.
not to be insensitive but some of the salem witch trials were so funny bitches like “i saw her at the devils sacrament!!!” girl... what were YOU doing at the devils sacrament 👀
happy birthday devils sacrament. i wish you were never born
So I am trying to find the history book where they were talking about witch hunts in Germany. Because I can't remember were that happened, but there was a smaller city were a woman was tortured into naming her fellow witches and she bold as brass named the wife of the local head honcho. So now said head honcho would have to supply his wife to be tortured. But there were some people that straight up said the next names would be the wives of of other highly important people and where would that end? So the witch hunts stopped there.
That was in a history book I read years ago and I wish I could remember its name. Help
New Final Fantasy screenshots show the male protagonist in revealing, skin-tight armor; male gamers freak out.
Omg…. come on let’s take a look.
The armor covers his chest well enough, you can’t see his hardened nipples (since you can see the curvature of the rest of his chest musculature so well it makes me believe that he has no nipples) and it has no belly-button window.
The armor doen’t ride up his butt that much, it does not render his arse into two highly polished bowling balls like you can see in several highly sugestive female armor sets.
Oh and speaking of balls… where is the male equivalent to those DD-Breast male gamers like to watch jiggling so much… where is the hung like a horse dick? I highly doubt that you can apply propper jiggle physics to that small a crotch.
So please, what’s so bad about it? Beside the fact that he has no propper padding, spiky plates that makes no sense and cut-outs in places where there should be extra protection (really, round cut-outs on the back of his knees? One well aimed cut and he’s crippled) but guess what, I’ve seen a lot worse sets of armor. Normally on female characters but well… that’s what female armor bingo is for.
Installed in the year 1410, this 600 year old clock in the city of Prague is the World’s oldest astronomical clock still in operation.
The clock is interesting because it has a 12 + 12 clockface which was normal at that time and people believe that Prage will suffer if the clock isn't properly cared for.
