I, and many others, simply understand that biological sex is real and immutable and has real consequences for how you are treated in society from birth. The term “gender” refers to the socially constructed concepts of masculinity and femininity, which change over time and across cultures. We are socialised into one of these roles depending on our sex, and gender is a tool of women’s oppression by socialising us into the subordinate social category.

You can call yourself whatever you want, and dress however you want, and deny the material reality of your sex and socialisation, but how you are perceived by society and the sex you actually are is more important in determining your social status and your experiences in a patriarchal system than some innate “identity” - which is so nebulous and undefinable that it simply cannot have a basis in law and policy.

You cannot force everyone to believe in your ideology, you cannot compel people’s speech and get angry at them when they don’t understand or don’t use the terms you insist on being referred to with. Especially for people whose first language is not English, they’re going to struggle with calling someone who is obviously female “they”, and they shouldn’t be labelled a hateful bigot for doing so. And even for people who are native English speakers, you have to force your brain to remember to say “they” or the other sex’s pronouns when clearly you’re referring to someone who is male or female. You have to actively deny reality and constantly be mindful of everything you say and walk on eggshells around these people, which is exhausting. Language should and does naturally evolve over time, not be something that everyone is forced to change on a whim lest they be penalised socially or legally.
