Slowly dabs at his cuts from their scruff in the lower levels of Zaun. Her soft fingers had a delicate touch as she knowingly understood the sharp sting the disinfectant might provide. With care, she wrapped and covered the markings. “You were very kind and courageous to step in and save me how you did.” She speaks lowly. “Thank you.” (Maggy’s stranger attempt to be nice to Ekko)

“Zaun’s full of unfriendly types.”

Eyes settled firmly on the woman for a long moment, unflinching even as she dabbed at his minor wounds. The mild pain and discomfort was nothing compared to some of the suffering he had put up with in the past. Ekko’s gaze fell as he watched her hands work, remaining oddly tense as long as those fingers remained upon him. “I could have been just another thug trying to take advantage of you, for all you knew. Let this be a lesson to always keep your wits up around here... and never trust anyone. If you want the easy life, head up to Piltover; down here life is dangerous.”

And much more exciting, but he wouldn’t let that part slip. Zaun molded and chiseled it’s denizens, turning them into strong, independent people who could handle themselves well enough... those who weren’t strong enough were simply eaten alive by the unforgiving streets and sewers. Piltover, on the other hand, babied the civilians, and let them all grow fat and content. They just existed. Only in Zaun did the people actually live. “A pretty face like yours won’t get you very far here. You’ve gotta have the grit and the power to keep yourself alive, no matter what get’s thrown at you.”

No matter how bitter the boy had been made by the world, he would always hold a special place in his heart for the pure and the innocent. There needed to be more of them in this harsh world... but that harsh world sadly had a tendency to devour their type. Ekko had to look out for those he still could, “She’s just a kid. Cut her some slack. Putting her down just for being her happy li’l self is a pretty shitty thing to do.”

Calloused hands found one of those long tails of hair that Jinx often boasted, gently lifting it and letting those light locks course along his fingers as gravity took them. It was an oddly quiet moment; and the girl’s usual grin was replaced with a largely-neutral expression. A part of Ekko felt that she might take whatever he said seriously, given the current mood… and so he found himself emboldened, eyes lingering on her pale, almost-malnourished body for a moment before rising to meet her gaze.

“You’re always causing trouble up in Piltover… Maybe you hate the place and want them to know it, or maybe it’s just fun to you, I don’t know. But, I… I worry about you, okay?” He had lost far too many friends, often to factors he couldn’t control. But, he felt he still had some control when it came to Jinx. Maybe he was naive… but he wanted her to calm down. He wanted her to come back to Zaun. He wanted those simpler, easier days that he used to have… “One of these days, that Sheriff might shoot you dead for all the crimes you’ve committed. I don’t want to see that happen.”

He stared at Jinx for a long moment, before opting to move closer, one hand rising to rest upon her cheek. His words had started to fail him, and so Ekko decided to let his actions speak. He leaned closer, gingerly pressing his lips to her temple, trying in vain to express just how much he cared about her; how much he wanted her to be safe. The boy found his voice again, barely above a whisper, “..I obviously can’t stop you from doing what you want to do, but… The next time you’re up there, leading Cait and her goons on a chase, just remember that there’s at least one person out there who cares about you. Alright..?”

And there sat Ekko, atop a small wall as the last of the Lost Children scurried away for the safety of their homes and hovels. A few discarded bits of paper and plastic were strewn about, along with one summarily smashed pumpkin. The night sky became his only companion as he contemplated the street rats, pickpockets, and other youths of Zaun that looked up to him. The boy knew they’d come out in droves for his humble little Harrowing celebration.

He didn’t have the money to buy candy and sweets for them all... none of them did. But, he did what he could to make it a fun night to remember. And now that he was left alone with his thoughts, he felt his heart sink. Why did he do this to himself? He spent so much time getting to know all of these kids... so much time coming to care for them and protect them. And far too often, the harsh streets of Zaun took them away.

Some simply left. Others ended up dead. And Ekko remembered every face. Every smile. Every name. He sighed, before hopping down from his perch and wandering down the street. Quiet nights like this were nice... and rather rare in Zaun. Before long, he found himself standing before a tribute to the fallen.

Ekko exhaled softly as he looked at the faces etched into the wall, dimly illuminated by the candles and lanterns he always kept burning. So many memories flooded his mind... Good times, bad times, and so much more. It hurt, when he lost the ones he cared about most. It hurt... And sometimes, he had to question just why he kept letting himself get hurt.

The boy stared at the wall for a long time, before finally closing his eyes and letting his head droop. A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. His life, short as it was so far, had been enriched by the lost. As much as it pained him to remember them, he could never deny just how complete they had made his life, before leaving it for good.

..He had to keep on fighting.

For the ones he had lost, and for those he could still save.
