Packard Automobile Plant, Detroit Michigan

I visited Detroit last month and was astonished that the stories I heard from friends and colleagues about Detroit were true. During drives around certain parts of the city, it was visible that life had completely departed. Overgrowth, demolition, vandalism, abandoned, forgotten and sad. Although I didn't get a chance to tour or get near the Packard Plant, I heard rumors that seeing it would be surreal. Photos might do it justice, as this 3.5million square foot industrial powerhouse that was abandoned in 1956 is a giant. More information here (Wikipedia).

Unclaimed patient suitcases, Norristown State Hospital. Oftentimes, when a patient in a state asylum died in care, the asylum was required to hold on to the luggage until a certain period of time elapsed. This would give the family - if there was a surviving family - time to decide if they wanted to make the effort to retrieve the belongings. Oftentimes, however, no family came, and the various suitcases and boxes of belongings would be piled up on a basement shelf and forgotten, as seen here in Building 14 at Norristown State Hospital. When the buildings were abandoned, the patients’ belongings were forgotten, much like many of the patients themselves, their records laying mouldering in damp buildings until their demolition.

Beyond those things we see everyday that are discarded without a second thought, there are countless buildings in complete ruin full of abandoned things from their past. How do we bring these relics back to life OR in the case of these suitcases, give them a proper burial?

Here are my personal Pallet Adirondack Chairs (PACs), after 3+ years of use, moving, dismantling, re-mantling and being outside during rain, sleet and snow. They've taken a beating with little repair or care. The wife wants them to become fire wood, the black cat wants them to continue being a scratching post and I want to salvage them...again. I will probably win. These photos are a first for me and probably most DIYers, post use, the unglamorous stage of our hobbies. No fresh paint, well fitting arm rests or fantastically blue skies in the background.
