Enjoy "cozy games" with an emphasis on cooperation and playing at your own pace — but with plenty of worldbuilding and a bit of existential mystery attached
Like MMORPGs at least in concept (lots of opportunities to meet new people organically, open zones to run around in, a storyline to play through), but you'd rather go pick flowers, explore, and go squirrel around with friends or new acquaintances than fight bosses, try not to aggro mobs, or worry about fall damage.
Thrive in farming sims and similar games where you set up systems for producing resources — either on a "just do whatever" level or, if you're like me, on a "tweak this within an inch of its life, involving the use of several spreadsheets to wring out every last bit of revenue" level
Have always wanted to romance EVERY NPC in a game at the same time (at least, the romance-eligible ones) — or just want to play in a world where polyamory is part of the established lore (but romance is never required gameplay)
Chafe at gender-locked ANYTHING (and maybe always wanted the ability to shapeshift). You can change anything about your character's appearance at will, and features like hairstyles, facial hair, and voice packs are not locked to your character's model type. All outfits, including all the free ones, are wearable by both body types, too.
Prefer a more cartoony visual style (but not Animal Crossing-level cartoony, more like Sims-level), with beautiful environments to run around in
Loved the science of "housing glitches" in FFXIV and want to try doing decor magic in another setting — with up to 3,500 item slots to play with, and no indoor/outdoor distinction
Want a game you can pick up and put down at will without having to make the most of a subscription or game time card. Palia is completely free to play all the way through, no paywalls on what you can do or where you can go. I'm a very active player, but I've got plenty of friends and acquaintances who pop back in every so often when the urge strikes them.
Have (and here's the disclaimer...) a reasonable tolerance for silly visual glitches, strange bugs, and a new game studio who are on a pretty steep learning curve as they tackle this weird, cross-genre game that they're building.
Despite being available on multiple platforms and having premium items and seasonal events, the game is very technically in open beta — and indeed, it plays like a game in beta in many respects. It gets regular patches in a typically-monthly rhythm, but I'm not gonna tout it as a perfectly-polished game. It's not. It's got foibles aplenty. I love the game enough to play it anyway, because it's the only game I've EVER played where I didn't feel like I was playing it "wrong."

Why is NOW the time to get into the game?
(And why haven't I talked about this before now? Well, the answer to the second one is mostly "too busy playing the game for an embarrassing number of hours," tbh.)
As for the first...
Palia just hit 10 million players, and to celebrate, they are running a special 20-day event that is giving everyone two free mystery outfit gifts (random premium cosmetic set) for logging in for 10 days out of the 20. (April 22 is day 2!) You can claim the first one on your VERY FIRST day logging in.
Royal Highlands, a fourth area for the game, comes out on May 12, 2026 — and the patch will be introducing mounts that can be used in all zones. (Yes, for YEAR OF THE HONSE :D) Three weeks is probably enough time to play through the story so far if you hustle a bit, if you decide you'd like to start the new area on release (but, like with everything in Palia, there's really no rush, either).
No aggressive enemies. No fall damage. No PvP. No currency-based player economy (operates on the "borrow a cup of sugar from a neighbor" principle). Crops do not wither even if ignored. Ranch animals never die (though they do grow old — and can then be turned into a baby again with a special cookie! lol)
In Palia, abundance is a problem to be solved by sharing with others, and the closest thing to a raid or a dungeon is a player-organized cooperative cooking party or bug-hunting event where players combine resources to mutual benefit.
The game is cross-platform: you can play on PC and all of the consoles it's available on (Switch, PS5, and the latest Xbox) without having to start a new save or account, as long as you link them all to one Palia login.
All platforms share the same in-game servers, with no separation, so you can play with friends (and meet new ones) no matter what they're using.
However, I DO recommend playing on PC if you can. The console experience is serviceable, but the Switch in particular tends to struggle, and — as is frequently the case on consoles — it's much harder to communicate in-game. (There is no built-in voice chat, but players often use Discord to coordinate.) Despite that, I know multiple people who have played exclusively on Switch since 2023.
The game also offers cross-region play, so if you've got friends elsewhere in the world, you can join their region (or vice versa) to play together. It's seamless, and you stay on the region you've synced to until you exit the game, even if your friend logs out — they don't have to "host" or anything. My friends list is full of people from the EU and APAC regions whom I met fairly organically!
