what if tj has homophobic parents and an even more homophonic and sexist dad, where he’s always told tj to “man up” “boys don’t cry” “that’s too girly” so tj has always had to put up this front of being this tough guy

but that changes when he meets cyrus

tj starts to break those walls down and begins to be more free and himself. even accepts his dyscalculia as something normal than abnormal

he shows his emotions, allows himself to smile and feel happy

so that’s why when kira proposes the idea of them doing a costume together he immediately rejects it because he’s already thought of a costume for him and cyrus

an inside joke, something that was just between the two of them. something that was theirs

but when kira tells tj “so you’d rather do a costume with cyrus than with me?” tj is instantly reminded of his father

the man that has told him boys can’t love boys. boys need to be tough. boys can’t show emotions. so tj is frighten. frighten that his true emotions and feelings will be exposed

so all he can do is give in.
