i saw this screenshot off twitter and he looks so gentle here, almost soft as he asked Ren not-suspiciously-at-all to not think of what's after Maruki (for them) (for him) (he looks so calm lying with that beautiful face about his fate) (when i can imagine him being so mad about this whole reality and just being here in general but he looks almost peaceful next to the only person he gives a flying fuck about in this world) (same reason he'd defy that fate and come back, akechi the dream that you are).

(i can almost imagine him speaking with this same expression when not rushed with anger and despair of being Maruki'd: i think i deserve what happened to me, but if i were to want otherwise, it would be because of you, Ren)

(when he wants to matter and thinks/hopes/hates that he does matter to Ren, and it's what he wants but not what comes after if he lets Ren have it here so it's like the same but opposite to his social link: he keeps Ren at arm's length but just like before can't help their connection, ends up lying about himself and it's still against what he truly wants, but also exactly what he wants)

On February 2nd, Akechi constantly averts his gaze, looking somewhere at the floor or to the side, because he knows that if he looks at Ren, whose eyes are filled with love, longing, and sorrow, he might do something he'll later regret. He wants to kiss him, spend the night with him, finally let Ren's warmth overtake him and envelop him in a cocoon so tight that Akechi never wants to return to the harsh reality.

And he also doesn't want Ren to see the same longing in his eyes, doesn't want Ren to understand what he's really thinking at that moment.

And I'm sure that in the postcanon, Akechi will have the opportunity to wrap himself in Ren's warmth, and Ren will finally be able to rest assured that Goro isn't going anywhere and is hugging him just as tightly.
